A mission call

It has been ages...but I just wanted to announce that I, Rachel Edwards, got my mission call to the Paraguay, Asuncion mission! I leave in 2 months and will be speaking Spanish and hopefully a little bit of Guarani. Since the people of Paraguay are carnivorous, I regret to add that I will be officially ending my 6-year meat fast in August. I've had a good run, but the good Lord knows that it's about time I got over my irrational disdain for large, red-meated animals. I am now no longer just a "chicken, fish, and turkey" kinda girl. Other than that...I am so excited for life's new adventures.

(My mom and I with my mission call. I brought it to my sister Baxter's track meet, because I couldn't bear to part with it. I was crying so I looked like a mess)

I went to my first rap concert tonight.

T.I. with Natalie, Ashton, Amanda, Eric (aka Georgia). I was the only one who "dressed up." I think only pictures can explain this one. Enjoy!

Library Woes

I know I mostly just rant on here, and hopefully I'm not too cynical, but I probably won't stop. People are just too funny.

Image

For example, there are so many funny things that people do in the BYU library. My number one pet peeve (that I actually don't think is funny at all) is that there are ALWAYS girls sleeping on the couches in the library bathroom! Ladies, are you kidding me??!! This is just gross. There's usually a mother breast feeding her child on the couch, which is totally fine (that's what the couches are for), but it is NOT OK for a girl to be curled up asleep right next to her! Then there's the girls who just study in there. WTF? It's bad enough for them to be asleep, but studying? There's a whole library outside where they could be studying! And it's not like the bathroom is any less noisy. If anything, it's way noisier (with gross noises too)! I shouldn't have to feel like I'm imposing on their studying when I need to fix my hair in the mirror or make sure I don't have anything in my teeth, but suddenly I'm the one feeling awkward? whatev.

Image

One wonderful thing about the BYU library is that it's one of the best places to people-watch. I can hardly concentrate on my homework, because there are so many funny things going on around me. I love the things people do when they think no one is watching. That might sound kind of terrifying and utterly creepy, and it kind of it, but I love it. Students are so focused on studying that they don't even notice. The best are the people falling asleep.

Image

Another thing I love about the library is the reactions of people when they get phone calls. Those trying to be polite, hurry out the stairway where their voice echoes to take their calls and you can hear their entire conversation anyway. It kind of defeats the purpose of even leaving your seat, but at least they're TRYING to be polite. The other type of person just answers their phone with a loud whisper or full voice and carries on their conversation like no one else is around. I'm not sure which I prefer, but I have been guilty of mostly the former. Both are funny.

Other things:
There's always ONLY ONE person at each table (if possible)
There's always one table of people who's there just to SOCIALIZE
There's always at least a couple of guys who honestly just CHECK OUT GIRLS the whole time
There's always a way dramatic DTR (Defintion of the Relationship) going on
There's always AT LEAST ten people (many times more) on FACEBOOK
There's always at least one funny PHONE CONVERSATION that I get to hear ("yeah dude, she totally came over and brought me soup last night and I'm studying with her cousin right now!"...the cousin probably heard)
Etc, Etc, Etc

Image

Honestly, I am guilty of so many of these. I know I've forgotten a few, so please let me know what they are if you please :)All in all, I seriously do love BYU. God bless the library.

The guy with the lady-silhouette mud flaps

Today I was driving home from the Costco in American Fork where I impulsively bought a velour jumpsuit...but that's not the funny part of the story. I was listening to my ipod through an "itrip" and suddenly a nearby car's frequency interfered with mine. I was enjoying a Mates of State song when suddenly a radio talk program (I'm assuming it was a podcast or something since it was on an ipod) came over my radio. I always get excited when this happens because I can usually look around and tell whose car the song (or in this case, radio program) is coming from and it's either a huge surprise or exactly what I expected. Anyway, the program was pretty obscene. It started saying some really vulgar things about sex, etc., but I'll spare you the details. All it really did was make me extremely curious as to who was listening to such a thing alone while driving. Big surprise, some tool with a soul patch rolls us next to me and winks in a HUGE black lifted truck with lady silhouettes in the mud flaps. Image
It was so pervy and so amazing. I was dying laughing...and was genuinely creeped out. I'm always making a huge deal of those kind of things.

But back to the velour jumpsuit, I've always wanted one (even though I think they're kind of tacky) and I am now finding myself wanting one of every color. They are so comfortable. The cold was the catalyst. Even though I'm obsessed with this rainy fall weather (it is so gorgeous in Provo right now), I sense that it is close to its end. I decided to start pretending now that I like winter to prevent the inevitable depression that comes when January hits and I'm over it. I hate to be one of those people who complains about the weather, no matter how it is, so hopefully the velour suit will help me maintain a positive attitude.

I know this post is all over the place, but I also just wanted to give a shout-out to my good friend Janel. She left for Arizona for 8 months yesterday and I'm going to miss her. I stole this picture from her blog (Mexico, October 2008). Image Best of luck!!

Jessy is getting married

My dearest little angel, Jessy is getting married! I am so excited and am loving hearing about all of the happiness, effort, and stress that goes into wedding planning. I had no idea. Congratulations to all of my friends and anyone else who has successfully planned a wedding. It is an incredible feat. All I know about my "someday wedding" is that I will have dolphin ice sculptures and a diet coke fountain. Basically, I'm into anything tacky.

In the midst of all of these wedding bells, I have been contemplating my future life as a mom. I know this is a cliche topic, especially in Mormon culture, but I can't wait to pull off the crap that moms can. Jessy and I talk about this occasionally. Lynsey and I did recently. With my luck, I'll end up having like twelve kids. Here's a glimpse of what you can expect to see from mom-Rachel in about twenty years:

1. Disney sweatshirts
2. Holiday Vests/earrings/brooches/etc
3. Leashes to keep track of the 12 (tribes)...still deciding if that's ok
4. An Astro van
5. Puff-paint crafts/clothes
6. Anything to do with "Twighlight" (even though I REALLY don't like those books, I'm sure I'll get talked into loving it)
7. "Wicked" and Amy Grant Christmas constantly playing throughout my house(I already love them)
8. HUGE PTA involvement
9. Neighborhood "Phantom" at Halloween..(if you're unfamiliar with this neighborhood tradition, it's when families anonymously leave baked goods on a neighbor's porch with a kind of "pass it on" note saying that the Phantom has already visited that family. tons of fun. really exciting. loved it as a kid.)
10. Neighborhood lunches with Relief Society ladies

Really though, I hope to be half the woman my mother is. She is a saint. I love moms and hopefully my twelve-child motherhood will be a success. Maybe I'm being a little idealistic.

I've Stumbled Upon Gold

If you ever get a 3/5 on an Accounting quiz, get your heart broken, eat too much candy, break out into hives, get grass stains on your favorite pants, fight with your sibling, or in general, just need some cheering up...youtube search ANY of the "Liken the Scriptures" musical numbers. These are my two favorites. I can't believe they're real. D&G and Nephi
