Before building suspension stems and seatposts that became cult favorites in gravel, endurance, and ultra cycling, Erik worked on everything from military aircraft to landmine clearance equipment. Now, he’s applying that same engineering mindset to solving a very different problem: helping cyclists ride farther with less pain.
This conversation goes beyond bike components, it’s really about how cycling culture is changing. Because maybe numb hands, neck pain, and destroyed backs don’t have to be part of the experience anymore.

Juliana Buhring’s life story is almost impossible to summarize. She is an ultra-endurance cyclist, bestselling author, activist, and the first woman to set a Guinness World Record for Fastest Solo Female Circumnavigation of the Globe by Bicycle, riding over 18,000 miles across 19 countries in just 152 days.
But her story didn’t begin on a bike.
Juliana grew up inside the controversial religious group Children of God, separated from her mother at a young age, and endured years of instability before eventually escaping in her early twenties. She later co-authored the international bestselling memoir Not Without My Sister and went on to write This Road I Ride, chronicling her journey around the world by bicycle.
Since that record-breaking ride, she has placed top-10 overall in events like the Transcontinental Race and finished 4th overall in the Trans Am Bike Race across the United States, competing alongside and often ahead of the strongest men in ultra cycling.
In this episode, we talk about survival, risk, grief, healing, and what drives someone to chase the edge of human endurance. We explore how cycling became both escape and medicine, and what she’s still searching for today.

What happens when an endurance athlete from a warm-weather country decides to chase a winter Olympic dream?
In this episode of Zone2Speak, I’m joined by José Cabeça, a Portuguese athlete who began his career in cycling and triathlon before making a bold and unconventional switch to cross-country skiing, a sport with almost no infrastructure in Portugal.
Despite starting skiing later than most, José went on to represent Portugal at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, becoming the country’s best-placed cross-country skier to date. Along the way, he’s trained without snow at home, relied on rollerskiing and overseas camps, and recently secured another Olympic quota spot for Portugal heading toward Milan-Cortina 2026.
This is a story about endurance beyond borders and what’s possible when commitment outweighs circumstance.
