Debugging performance issues in production can be a pain and in some cases\u00a0<\/span>impossible without the right tools. Java profilers have been around forever, but the\u00a0<\/span>profilers most developers think about are only one type – there are actually three:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Standard JVM Profilers<\/b> that track every detail of the JVM (CPU, thread,\u00a0<\/span>memory, garbage collection, etc).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Lightweight profilers<\/b> that highlight your application with a bit of abstraction.<\/li>\n
  3. Application Performance Management (APM)<\/b> tools used for monitoring\u00a0<\/span>applications live in production environments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Standard JVM Profilers
    \n<\/b>A standard Java profiler certainly provides the most data, but not necessarily the\u00a0<\/span>most usable information. This depends on the type of debugging task. These\u00a0<\/span>profilers will track all method calls and memory usage<\/a> which allows a developer to\u00a0<\/span>dive into the call structure at whatever angle they choose.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Lightweight Java Transaction Profilers
    \n<\/b>Lightweight profilers take a different approach at tracking your application by\u00a0<\/span>injecting themselves right into the code. Aspect Profilers use aspect-oriented\u00a0<\/span>programming (AOP) to inject code into the start and end of specified methods. Java\u00a0<\/span>Agent profilers use the Java Instrumentation API to inject code into your application.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Low Overhead, Java JVM Profiling in Production (APM)
    \n<\/b>All the profilers so far have been great for development, but tracking how\u00a0<\/span>your system performs in production is critical. Production is always a\u00a0<\/span>different landscape \u2013 development and staging setups typically don\u2019t have\u00a0<\/span>the same datasets and load.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Java APM tools typically use the Java Agent profiler method but with\u00a0<\/span>different instrumentation rules to allow them to run without affecting\u00a0<\/span>production performance. The trick with these profilers is to provide the\u00a0<\/span>right information in a smart way to not take up CPU cycles.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Why Are Some Java Profilers So Expensive?<\/b><\/p>\n

    XRebel is a cool tool, but it costs $365 a year. Stackify Prefix is free and\u00a0<\/span>provides much of the same functionality.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The biggest problem with APM solutions is definitely their pricing. They\u00a0have traditionally been so expensive that only the largest enterprises\u00a0<\/span>could afford them. It doesn\u2019t make a lot of sense to spend $100 a month\u00a0<\/span>on a server at Azure or AWS and then spend another $200 a month for a\u00a0<\/span>product like New Relic.<\/span><\/p>\n
