How to work with Gusto

Build a powerful app in just four easy steps.

Step one

Set up your Gusto Developer account.

Accept the terms of service, set up your account, and create an application to get your unique set of Gusto API keys. Then, use our checklist to scope your app build-out.

Step two

Use our resources to build your app.

Build your app using our demo and other resources. You can track progress and ask questions as you go. Next, create a quick tutorial video and marketing strategy. Then it's off to QA.

Step three

Launch your app and spread the word.

Once approved, production API keys are issued. You'll want to update your website or marketplace and publish support content about the app. Once you train your sales team, it's time to get the word out.

Step four

Track and optimize your app's performance.

Performance starts with promotion — send press releases, post on social, and email your customers. You can track your app's usage and review feedback and errors to improve over time.

Remember, better performance means more perks and rewards.

How long does it usually take to build an integration?

It depends on the type of app integration, but we usually estimate about 1 to 2 months from the time demo keys are issued to the time production keys are issued (including a QA review). It's always a good idea to scope your app build-out before you start building.

What kind of support does Gusto offer?

We're here to make sure your integration launches smoothly. We have a fully staffed Developer Relations team to assist in the build process — you can email them with whatever questions may come up.

What's the Quality Review (QA) and why is it required?

Once your API integration is ready in demo, we perform a Quality Review or QA before issuing production keys. This is to ensure the integration works and our shared customers have an excellent experience.
