Inspiration

As individuals who see and understand the complex nature of navigating through social situations through the challenges of social anxiety, we were intrigued by the idea of creating a solution for those who find it difficult to engage in social interactions (with the added bonus of helping shoppers who want to get in and out of stores fast!).

What it does

AccesSMart, though a user-friendly interface, allows users to input an item, whether that be something from a shopping list, or an over-the-counter medication, and highlights the path to the selected item from the user’s chosen store. We accomplish this by partnering with local stores in order to update the item locations as they restock.

How we built it

We built AccesSMart a high-fidelity prototype using Figma, Adobe Illustrator and editing effects. The backend is implemented through Node.js, React.js, Firebase, Parcel, with the main features created using Mappedin's SDK and API.

Challenges we ran into

Being ambitious with a project this big is never easy! We wanted to challenge ourselves, and so decided to try something completely new; Mappedin. Given we had never used it before, we often ran into a situation where minor changes and mistakes to the code would break the code. Front-end wise, integrating firebase/firestore was also finicky; we were often running into configuration issues. The last big challenge was the usage of hooks in React, as it requires a lot of debugging, something that’s difficult to do under a time crunch.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For three out of our four members, this was one of our first or second hackathons, and so being able to complete the sprint necessary to create a project in 24 hours is something we’re all very happy about. Something else that we’re proud of is our ability to ideate. The scope of this hackathon (and most other ones) in general are very large, meaning there are many different directions we could’ve chosen. We were able to collectively decide on a track, idea, and tech stack to use quickly, and could thus spend more time on the creation of the project.

What we learned

As a team, the two most important things we learned were how to delegate tasks efficiently, which is valuable when each member has a different set of strengths, and what to do when you underperform (learning how to manage with the minimum viable product). Individually we each learned different things! Our devs got a taste of what it’s like to integrate mappedin, and the project managers got to improve on their Figma skills, as well as increased experience with timeline management.

What's next for AccesSMart

Although we were unable to link the front-end and back-end of our idea together during the hackathon’s time frame, we believe in the unique idea of our project and plan to complete and launch our app.
