Inspiration
In university, we noticed many people drinking in unsafe ways, and being put in harms way. While youth drinking culture has been around for a while, there are not many solutions in place for ensuring safe behaviours while drinking.
What it does
This is an iOS app that helps young adults stay safe while drinking. It helps people keep track of what they are consuming, predict their blood alcohol level and alcohol poisoning, as well as stay safe through location sharing with friends.
How we built it
We used Swift on XCode to create the iOS app. We also integrated Presage into the app, which uses AI to measure heart rate and breathing rates. We used the heart rate and breathing rate, alongside calculated blood alcohol levels, to predict the likelihood of alcohol poisoning.
Challenges we ran into
Learning Swift was a learning curve at first, but it showed to be similar enough to other coding languages we have used prior.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
For both of us, this was our first time building an iOS application!
What we learned
We learned Swift, a new coding language to both of us. We also learned a lot about app design and functionality.
What's next for NightCap
In the future, we would like to integrate a map API to help find the shortest and most well lit path home. We would also like to develop a morning after mode, where the app is able to check in on the person the next day, and provide advice.
