This behavior is compatible with io text streams in universal newlines
mode. Previously they split lines using Unicode line terminators as in
str.splitlines().

No need to use _ prefix for new functions?

Since __all__ is defined there is no need to use _ prefix.

I removed the " needs backport to 3.6" label, the 3.6 branch no longer accept bugfixes (only security fixes are accepted): https://devguide.python.org/#status-of-python-branches
