Unobtrusive convenience

Accelerator Keys runs quietly in your menu-bar. When Excel is open, the app watches for keystrokes, and uses the Accessibility API to display hotkeys and control Excel.

Why we built this

Mac users of Excel have struggled with the lack of alt-key shortcuts for the past 10 years with only painful workarounds available (see Reddit and Microsoft's forum).

macOS's increased support for accessibility features recently enabled a new way to control Mac Excel. Mac users can now use alt-key shortcuts without spending a lot or inconvenient setups. Give it a try!

Issues with current workarounds

  • Bootcamp: Inconvenient to switch between Windows and Mac partitions, when most of our apps are on the Mac partition. Read-only access to Mac files from Windows partition without paid third-party software. Requires an additional Office license (US$150 per year).
  • Running a VM (e.g. Parallels): Laggy and consumes a lot of CPU. Some keyboard shortcuts still don't work properly. And this isn't cheap — Parallels costs US$80/year, and you need additional Windows and Office licenses.
  • Buying a separate PC: Technically this works…but surely we can do better than buying a new computer?

How to Use Alt Shortcuts on Mac for Excel

Mac users have always struggled to use Windows-style Alt key shortcuts in Excel. Here's how Accelerator Keys solves this problem.

  1. Understand the Option Key: On a Mac keyboard, the Option key (⌥) is in the same position as the Alt key on Windows. While macOS doesn't natively support Excel's Alt-key ribbon shortcuts, Accelerator Keys bridges this gap by intercepting Option key presses and translating them into the ribbon commands you know from Windows.
  2. Install Accelerator Keys: Download Accelerator Keys and follow the simple setup wizard. The app needs accessibility permissions to detect keystrokes and control Excel—this takes just a few clicks to configure.
  3. Use Your Windows Shortcuts: Once installed, open Excel and press the Option key. You'll see the familiar ribbon navigation letters appear, just like in Windows. Type the same key sequence you use on Windows (like H, V, V for Paste Values) to execute the command.

Example: To paste values on Mac Excel, press Option → H → V → V — the same as Alt + H V V on Windows.

FAQs

Have a question, or just want to say hi? You can always reach us at [email protected].

For setup instructions, please follow this walkthrough.

  • What is the Alt key equivalent on Mac for Excel?
  • On Mac, the Option key (⌥) is the physical equivalent of the Windows Alt key. However, pressing Option in Mac Excel doesn't activate ribbon shortcuts like Alt does on Windows. This is because Microsoft never implemented Alt key ribbon navigation in the Mac version of Excel. Accelerator Keys solves this by enabling native Alt+key ribbon shortcuts on Mac.

  • How do I use Alt shortcuts in Excel on Mac?
  • By default, you can't—Mac Excel doesn't support Windows-style Alt key ribbon navigation. With Accelerator Keys installed, simply press the Option key (which acts as Alt), then type your shortcut sequence. For example, Option → H → O → I to auto-fit column width, just like on Windows.

  • Why don't Alt key shortcuts work in Mac Excel by default?
  • Microsoft never added Alt key ribbon navigation to Excel for Mac. This forces Mac users to rely on mouse clicks or memorize completely different keyboard shortcuts. Accelerator Keys bridges this gap by implementing the missing functionality natively on macOS.

  • Does Accelerator Keys replicate Windows Alt shortcuts exactly?
  • Yes! Accelerator Keys lets you use the same Alt key sequences you know from Windows. Press Option (the Mac equivalent of Alt), then type your shortcut—like H, O, I for auto-fit column width. For the most authentic Windows experience, we also recommend setting your Mac's function keys to work as standard F1-F12 keys.

  • How many shortcuts does Accelerator Keys support?
  • Accelerator Keys supports over 900 Alt key shortcuts across Excel and PowerPoint, covering every ribbon tab including Home, Insert, Page Layout, Formulas, Data, Review, and View. See the complete list of supported shortcuts.

  • What macOS and Microsoft Office versions are supported?
  • Accelerator Keys supports macOS 11 Big Sur through macOS 15 Tahoe, on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It works with Microsoft Office 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016.

  • Is it free to use?
  • Yes! Accelerator Keys offers a 14-day free trial with full functionality—no credit card required. Download it, try all 900+ shortcuts, and see the productivity boost for yourself before deciding.

  • Is Accelerator Keys safe? Does it access my spreadsheet data?
  • Absolutely safe. Accelerator Keys uses Apple's Accessibility API solely to read button labels in the Excel/PowerPoint ribbon and simulate keyboard navigation. It never reads, stores, or transmits your spreadsheet data, formulas, or files. The app runs entirely on your Mac with no cloud processing.

  • Can I use my license on multiple Macs?
  • Each license activates on one Mac at a time. You can easily transfer your license between Macs by deregistering from Menu Bar → Manage Account → Deregister this Mac, then activating on your new Mac. For users who need simultaneous access on multiple devices, additional licenses are available with bulk discounts.

  • Why do I need to enable automatic updates?
  • The app needs to be updated each time Microsoft updates Excel Office 365. This allows the app to find controls in the Excel ribbon accurately (e.g., if button labels or the ribbon layout has changed), and let users control them through Accelerator Keys.

  • I signed up for a free trial but did not receive an activation code
  • The activation code is automatically sent to the email address which you used to sign up for the trial. If you're missing the code or think you might have mistyped your email address, drop us an email at [email protected] so that we can manually retrieve the code for you.

  • I keyed in the wrong email address when signing up for a free trial - how do I fix this?
  • Click on the link underneath the verification code input field to go back and try again with the correct email address.

  • How do I activate Accelerator Keys after paying for a subscription? Do I need a licence key?
  • Once you have paid for a subscription, you can use the email address that you used during subscription to activate Accelerator Keys, just by clicking on the "Activate" button (see image below). No licence key or activation code needed!

  • I purchased a subscription plan, but when I key in my email address, it says that no purchases were found for this email address
  • The email address used is case sensitive and character sensitive, so make sure you key it in exactly. Drop us an email at [email protected] if you can't remember the exact email address used, or if it still doesn't work.

  • How do I transfer my Accelerator Keys licence to a different laptop?
  • To transfer your licence to a different laptop, you will first have to deregister the current laptop associated with your subscription.

To deregister the current laptop associated with your subscription:

    • Click on the Accelerator Keys icon in the menu bar.
    • Click on Manage account > Deregister this Mac.
    Screenshot of deregistration menu

After your current laptop has been deregistered, you can activate Accelerator Keys on your new laptop using the same email address associated with your subscription.

  • How do I transfer my Accelerator Keys licence to a new laptop, if I no longer have access to my old laptop?
  • No problem - drop us an email at [email protected] so that we can manually deregister your old laptop on the backend.

  • How do I cancel my plan
  • You can cancel your subscription at any time, just:

    • Click on the Accelerator Keys icon in the menu bar.
    • Click on Manage account > Billing.
    • Click Cancel plan.
    Screenshot of deregistration menu

Do note that cancelling your subscription will terminate your access to Accelerator Keys with immediate effect, even if you have just paid for a new subscription cycle.

  • Help! I can't get Accelerator Keys to work at all
  • Make sure that you've followed all the instructions in our set-up walkthrough, and that Accelerator Keys is open before you open Excel.

If that still doesn't work, drop us an email at [email protected] with the following information:

    • Your macOS version
    • Your Excel version
    • Your Accelerator Keys version
  • Could my antivirus software be blocking Accelerator Keys?
  • Yes! Some antivirus programs (such as Avast, Norton, Kaspersky, or similar) can block Accelerator Keys from sending keystrokes to Excel or PowerPoint. This is because AK uses macOS accessibility features to simulate keyboard input, which some security software may flag.

If your shortcuts aren't working, try:

    • Temporarily disabling your antivirus to test if that's the cause
    • Adding Accelerator Keys to your antivirus's exclusion list or whitelist
    • Checking your antivirus logs for any blocked activity related to AcceleratorKeys
  • Help! I'm having technical issues with Accelerator Keys
  • Drop us an email at [email protected] with the following information:

    • Your macOS version
    • Your Excel version
    • Your Accelerator Keys version
    • A description of the error, preferably with screenshots or a screen recording.
  • Do you offer any student discounts or bulk discounts?
  • Yes! We offer discounts for students and bulk purchases. Drop us an email at [email protected] with details about your situation and we'll work something out.
