Installation
Install Athas on macOS, Windows or Linux, choose a package, and safely uninstall it.
Updated
Choose the build for your operating system and CPU architecture from Download Athas. Use stable releases for everyday work; see Updates for upgrades.
Quick Install
curl -fsSL https://athas.dev/install.sh | shIf you prefer wget:
wget -qO- https://athas.dev/install.sh | shThe install script detects your OS and architecture, downloads the latest stable release from GitHub by default, verifies the SHA256 checksum when available, and installs it. To install a specific release, pass its version:
curl -fsSL https://athas.dev/install.sh | sh -s -- --version 0.15.1On macOS, the script installs Athas to /Applications. On Linux, it installs the
app bundle to ~/.local/share/athas/athas.app and links the executable at
~/.local/bin/athas.
On Linux, Athas uses the system WebKitGTK 4.1. The script checks for it and, if it is missing, prints the command to install it instead of installing an app that cannot start:
| Distribution | Package |
|---|---|
| Debian, Ubuntu | libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0 |
| Fedora | webkit2gtk4.1 |
| Arch Linux | webkit2gtk-4.1 |
| openSUSE | libwebkit2gtk-4_1-0 |
Linux Package Repositories
Athas publishes signed APT and DNF repositories for x64 and ARM64. Once the repository is set up, your system package manager installs Athas and picks up each stable release with its regular upgrades.
Add the signing key and the repository, then install Athas:
sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://athas.dev/apt/athas.gpg | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/athas.gpg > /dev/null
echo "deb [arch=amd64,arm64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/athas.gpg] https://athas.dev/apt stable main" \
| sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/athas.list > /dev/null
sudo apt update
sudo apt install athasUpdate Athas with the rest of your system:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgradeBoth repositories are signed with the Athas Packages key ([email protected]), fingerprint
9D96 7A0C 00D8 DC21 1F23 695B 9548 A14F 4E5A 0666. They track stable releases only, and the
package files are the same ones attached to each GitHub release.
Package Managers
brew install --cask athasThe Homebrew cask and the athas-bin AUR package are maintained by the community. Athas does not
publish a Nix package; community packages may exist. WinGet and Scoop
packages are on the way; until then use the PowerShell command above or the Windows installer.
Manual Download
Download the latest version from GitHub releases:
- Download the
.dmgfile from releases - Open the downloaded file
- Drag Athas to your Applications folder
- Open Athas from Applications
Verify the install
Open Athas, open a project folder, save a test file, and open the terminal. Install the shell command
from Settings > General > Terminal Command, then run athas --help in a new shell.
If the app will not launch, record the exact error and package format for Troubleshooting.
Uninstall
Quit Athas before uninstalling. Removing user-data directories also removes local settings and history; export or back up anything you want to keep first. Removing only the application preserves its user data. Use the package manager that installed the app when possible.
rm -rf /Applications/Athas.appOptional: permanently remove local settings/history and cache after backing them up:
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.code.athas
rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/com.code.athas
