How it works

You click around. Capta directs the camera.

While you record, Capta watches your clicks, typing and scrolling. When you stop, the edit exists.

Record

Press ⌥⌘R from anywhere. Screen, window or area, with mic, camera and system audio if you want them.

It zooms on your clicks

Capta reads the button or field under each click and glides to it. Pauses go, typing runs faster.

It captions your voice

Talk while you record. Capta transcribes you on your Mac and keeps every cut away from your sentences.

Export or share

Up to 4K at 60 fps, as MP4, GIF or straight to the clipboard. Or switch to Guide for a document.

Walkthroughs: how to move your mouse for a smooth recording, record a demo video on a Mac, make a GIF, cut a vertical clip, add captions.

The editor

The edit is there when you stop.

Change the look, drag a zoom, fix a caption, or switch to Guide for a document. Or don't, and export.

The editor, in motion

Play the edit, nudge a zoom, then put the take on a laptop in a café with one click. Every change previews at once and can be undone.

One small panel, from anywhere

⌥⌘R opens it: record or screenshot a window, the screen or an area, and pick the microphone, camera and system audio under Options. On a MacBook with a notch, the countdown, the time and Stop sit beside the notch.

Capta's capture panel, a slim toolbar: close; record a window, the screen, an area or again (each with a red dot); screenshot a window, the screen, an area or a scrolling page; and Options, with system audio switched on

A guide from the same take

Switch the editor to Guide and every click becomes a numbered screenshot with the control boxed and a sentence under it. Export it as a PDF, or push it into Hudu. How it works.

Beside the notch

A small piggy keeps you company.

On a MacBook with a notch, Capta's piggy sits right beside it, breathing, blinking and twitching an ear. Click it for the menu. While you record, the time, Pause and Stop sit there instead of over your screen, and never in the recording.

On a real device

Your demo, on a laptop in a café.

Pick one of 29 photographed scenes and your recording plays on the device's screen, in perspective, with the pointer on it. The zooms push into the photo toward what you click, or hold the shot you framed.

The details

Everything a product video needs. Nothing to set up.

Dead air out

Pauses go; typing and loading run at double speed with eased ramps. A minute of fumbling comes back as thirty seconds.

Cuts on the beat

Drop in a track and Capta reads its tempo on your Mac, landing each cut on the grid with the music lowered under your voice.

Voice, levelled

Your narration at one level, fans, hum and room hiss learned from the pauses and gated out.

You, in a bubble

Eight bubble shapes in a corner, or a camera column beside the video. Room blurred, live from the countdown on.

Title and end cards

Seven designs, classic to cinematic, in your accent colour on your own backdrop, previewed live.

Keystrokes on screen

Shortcuts as chips that type out live. Typed text only if you ask, never from a password field.

Written for you

Title, caption, chapters and a social post from what happened on screen, by a small model you download once or Apple Intelligence.

Share with a link

One click copies the export to your iCloud Drive and Apple's sharing sheet hands you a URL anyone can open.

The spec sheet

Everything in the box.

Capture

Screen, window or area
Any display. A window you drag mid-take stays framed.
Camera and mic
You in a corner bubble with a roundness dial, mirror, zoom, lighting and a blurred room. Pick which mic and camera right in the capture panel, and see yourself live from the countdown on: the bubble is on your screen, never in the recording.
System audio
The app's own sounds, kept wherever the video runs at normal speed.
Countdown, pause, notes
Three seconds to get your hands in place, notifications muted. Pause beside the notch, on the Stop pill or with ⌥⌘P. Talking points in a floating panel that is never in the recording.
Record again
⇧⌘R repeats the last window, area or display; the area picker opens on the last area.

Edit

Live preview
Each setting applies as you change it, at your screen's own resolution; the first look plays before the smooth copy is even built. Export is the only render.
Zooms you can steer
Drag one, stretch it, aim it at a point, nudge it from the keyboard. Cut any stretch with ⌥I, ⌥O and ⌥⌫. Zoom the timeline for long takes.
Look
Gradients, meshes, patterns, your wallpapers or your brand colour; your recording on 29 photographed laptops, displays, tablets and phones; a backdrop that slowly drifts; your logo in a corner. Save it all as a preset.
Cursor
Smoothed, scaled, with click ripples. Arrow, hand, dot, spotlight or hidden.
Captions and voice
Transcribed on the Mac, editable, find-and-replace, pill or bar or plain, top or bottom. The voice levelled automatically, the room noise gated out.
Music
Three built-in tracks, Creative Commons search with preview, a drag bar for the section that plays.

Screenshots

Screen, window, area, page
Scrolling capture stitches a whole page into one picture.
Annotate
Arrow, line, box, ellipse, pen, highlighter, numbered steps, spotlight, mosaic blur, text, crop. Select any mark to move or resize it.
Restyle
Every video background and the Mac's wallpapers as one-click looks.
Send
Copy, save, share, or drag the picture straight into another app.

Questions people ask

Before you download.

Is Capta free?

Yes. Every feature, no watermark, no account, no trial, no subscription.

Does Capta run on Intel Macs?

No. Capta needs macOS 14 or later on an Apple silicon Mac (M1 and later); the on-device analysis, transcription and rendering rely on it.

Does Capta upload my recordings?

No. Recording, the edit, transcription and rendering run on your Mac, and there is no account. The app sends anonymous usage events, never your recordings, and one switch in Settings turns them off. Share copies a video to your own iCloud Drive only when you press it. The privacy policy spells it out.

How does the automatic edit work?

While you record, Capta watches your clicks, typing and scrolling. It zooms in on what you clicked, cuts dead air, speeds up typing and lands cuts on the beat of your music. Drag, stretch or delete any zoom afterwards.

How do captions work?

Turn the mic on and talk. Capta transcribes on the Mac, with downloadable Qwen models on macOS 14 or later or Apple Speech on macOS 26 or later, keeps cuts away from your sentences and burns the captions in. The captions guide walks through it.

Can Capta write a step-by-step guide?

Yes, from the same recording. Switch the editor to Guide: each click becomes a numbered screenshot with the control boxed and a sentence under it, and typing and shortcuts get steps of their own. Fix what a reader would trip on, then export or push it into Hudu. The guide walkthrough shows the five steps.

Can my camera be in the video?

Yes. Pick a camera in the recorder and it sits in a bubble in one of eight shapes, from a circle to a pill, or in a column on the left or right while the screen zooms beside it. Size, corners and column width are yours to set.

What can Capta export?

MP4 in H.264 or HEVC, GIF, a poster PNG, or the clipboard, in 16:9, vertical or square, up to 4K at 60 fps, with presets for YouTube, X, Reels, the App Store and README GIFs. More on the support page.

Your recordings stay on your Mac.

Element detection, beat analysis, speech transcription, the Apple Intelligence features, the edit engine and the renderer run on your machine.
