FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is Cleat?

Cleat is a native, local-first Mac productivity toolbox with a keyboard launcher. Press ⌘Space to open apps and files, search your clipboard history, snap windows, run calculations and conversions, expand snippets, and chat with a local or cloud assistant. It is built with Swift and AppKit for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later.

How is Cleat different from Spotlight, Alfred or Raycast?

Cleat is built with Swift and AppKit for a native Mac experience. No Cleat account is needed, and your clipboard history, snippets and settings stay on your Mac. Online features connect to their respective services; cloud AI is your choice. Extensions are plain executables in any language that print one JSON object per line, with no SDK or build step. It is free, with no subscription, and it imports snippets from Alfred and Raycast so you can switch without starting over. Compare features with each: getcleat.app/wiki/cleat-vs-raycast, /wiki/cleat-vs-alfred and /wiki/cleat-vs-spotlight.

Will it work on my Mac?

You need macOS 15 or later and an Apple silicon Mac. Translation and dictation need macOS 26. The assistant also supports a downloadable built-in model, a local model server, or your own cloud API key.

What am I trying in the browser?

A browser simulation of Cleat. Try app search, calculations, clipboard history and window commands with sample data. Translation and assistant responses use preset examples. The Mac app translates on device; its assistant uses the local or cloud provider you choose.

Can I bring my snippets with me?

Yes. You can import snippets from Alfred or Raycast, and clipboard history from Alfred. The wiki walks you through it.

How much does Cleat cost?

Nothing. Cleat is free: every feature, for everyone, with every update. There is no license key, trial or subscription.

Do I need an account?

No. You can install Cleat and start using it. You keep your clipboard history and snippets on your Mac. Online features use their respective services. Cloud assistant providers need an API account and bill usage separately.

Does the assistant send my text to the cloud?

You choose. Apple Intelligence and the built-in model process text on your Mac. A model server receives text at the address you configure. Cloud models send prompts, selected clipboard text and conversation context to your chosen provider. API keys stay in macOS Keychain.

I bought a license key. Do I still need it?

No. Since version 1.1.21 Cleat does not ask for a key, and nothing changes for you: update and keep using it. Thank you for supporting it early.
