Projects

University of Washington Informatics Capstone Project (In Progress)

Vision and Goals

My team's capstone project aims to improve a practical understanding of data privacy practices through an interactive walkthrough of common online behavior, and how those actions can be used to collect personal data.

We use a short quiz to test initial knowledge of data collection and privacy, then proceed with a simulated browsing experience to show what actions (like hovering, clicking, and scrolling) can be captured and used to measure topic engagement.

Procesess

Much of the initial ideation, design, and testing was done collaboratively with the whole group, and we created a prototype demo using generative AI and implemented in React.

Takeaways

User research among students revealed that many had some knowledge or even concerns about data collection, but did not know details about the mechanics of how it worked, or what they could do to limit data exposure.

Next Steps

After our product demo was completed, we plan to continue making improvements, focusing on these items:

  • Review and refine the codebase
  • User Experience and accessibility improvements
  • Adding elements to make the experience more engaging and interactive
  • Additional demonstrations of data collection
  • Detailed summary information on privacy best practices, and links/walkthroughs for settings on specific platforms

Simple Redundant Cloud Web Service

This project builds a geographically redundant, load-balanced pair of VM Linux-based web hosts running nginx, using Terraform and Google Cloud Project. This is a quick way to scaffold up a web service for lower environments and easy A/B testing by manipulating active hosts in the load balancer. This can also be customized to use your other docker images or add additional cloud components.

Console Blackjack

A simplified blackjack game, playable from the unix command-line terminal. Written in javascript.

Education

  • Associate of Science in Computing and Software Development from Lake Washington Institute of Technology
  • Enrolled as an Informatics major/Linguistics minor at University of Washington
