Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about iHatePDF and our free PDF tools

What is iHatePDF?

iHatePDF (ihatepdf.com) is a free online PDF editor and converter with more than 35 tools in one place. You can edit, merge, split and compress PDFs, convert PDF to Word, Excel, PowerPoint or JPG and back, sign, scan, translate and OCR PDFs, and improve your CV with the AI CV Optimizer. It works in any browser, with no signup and no watermark. The name says it all: we hate PDFs too, so we fixed them.

Is iHatePDF really free?

Yes, 100% free. There is no paid plan, no trial that runs out, no watermark on your files and no signup. A free account is optional and lets you process several files at once. If optional premium features are ever added, they will be clearly marked, and the tools that are free today will stay free.

How do I edit a PDF online for free?

Open Editly, our free PDF editor, and add your PDF. Click any text to change it, and the original font is matched automatically. You can also add text, images, highlights, drawings, notes and your signature, then download the edited PDF. No watermark, no signup and nothing to install.

How do I convert a PDF to Word?

Open the PDF to Word converter, add your PDF and click Convert to Word. You get an editable .docx file that keeps the layout, fonts, images and tables as close to the original as possible, and scanned PDFs are converted with OCR. It's free, with no email or signup.

How do I merge PDF files into one?

Open Merge PDF, add your files, drag them into the right order and click Merge PDF. Word files, PowerPoint files and images can be added too, and everything is combined into a single PDF. This free PDF merger works on a phone or a computer, with no watermark.

How do I reduce the size of a PDF?

Use Compress PDF: add your file, choose Less, Recommended or Extreme compression and download the smaller PDF. Scanned and image-heavy PDFs shrink the most. Need to get a PDF under an upload limit? Our guide shows how to reduce a PDF under 100 KB.

How do I convert JPG and other images to PDF?

Open JPG to PDF, add your photos and click Convert to PDF. JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP and most other image formats work, and several images are combined into one PDF in the order you choose, or saved as separate PDFs.

How do I convert Word, Excel or PowerPoint to PDF?

Use Word to PDF, Excel to PDF or PowerPoint to PDF: add the file and download the finished PDF. To make a PDF from a web page or HTML, use Webpage to PDF or HTML to PDF. Together they make iHatePDF a free PDF maker for almost any file.

How do I convert a PDF to JPG, Excel or PowerPoint?

Use PDF to JPG to turn each page into an image, PDF to Excel to move tables into an editable spreadsheet, or PDF to PowerPoint to get slides you can edit. Every converter is free and needs no signup.

How do I split a PDF or rearrange its pages?

Use Split PDF to save pages or page ranges as separate files, and Organize PDF to drag pages into a new order. For quick fixes there are Delete Pages, Rotate PDF and Crop PDF, each with a preview of every page.

Can I edit a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?

Yes. You don't need Adobe Acrobat or any other software. Editly runs in your browser on a computer, tablet or phone, edits the text that's already in the PDF and is free with no watermark. Our guide explains how to edit a PDF without Adobe step by step.

Does Windows 11 have a free PDF editor?

Not a full one. Microsoft Edge, the default PDF viewer in Windows 11, lets you highlight, draw, add text and fill in forms, but it can't change the text that's already in the PDF. To edit existing text, merge files or convert a PDF, open iHatePDF in Edge or any other browser. There's nothing to install.

Can AI edit PDF files?

Yes, and safely. Tell Buddy, the assistant in the corner of every page, what you need, for example "compress this and convert it to Word". The AI only reads your instruction and picks the right tool and settings. Our regular PDF engines do the actual work, so the AI never rewrites your document. You can also chat with a PDF to get answers and summaries.

Is it safe to edit PDFs online with iHatePDF?

Yes. Files travel over an encrypted HTTPS connection, and files uploaded for processing are deleted automatically within one hour. We never sell or share your files or use them to train AI. For the most privacy, switch on Browser mode: supported tools then run entirely on your device, so your file never leaves it. Share links and signature requests stay online only until they expire.

Does iHatePDF have file size limits?

Most tools accept files up to 80 MB without an account, and a free account lets you process up to 3 files at once on most tools. Limits differ by tool and are shown on each tool page. Hourly fair-use limits keep the service fast for everyone.

Do I need to install anything or create an account?

No. iHatePDF works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and other modern browsers on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, with no account needed. When a file is ready, you can send it straight to another tool without downloading it first. You can also install iHatePDF as an app and use many tools offline.

Who is behind iHatePDF, and how does it make money?

iHatePDF is made by Nutshell Labs (nutshell-labs.com). It's free for you: there are no ads, no paid plan, and we never sell your data. Optional premium features may be added later; if so, they'll be clearly marked, and the tools that are free today will stay free.

Is iHatePDF the same as iLovePDF?

No. iHatePDF is an independent website made by Nutshell Labs and isn't affiliated with iLovePDF or any other PDF service. Our official site is ihatepdf.com; other sites with a similar name aren't run by us. If you're choosing between tools, see our comparison of popular PDF tools.

Why do people hate PDFs?

Because PDFs are built to look the same everywhere, not to be changed. Editing text, filling in forms, pulling out tables or shrinking a huge file usually needs paid software. That's why we built iHatePDF: you don't have to stop using PDFs, you just need tools that make them easy to edit, convert and share, for free.

Is the PDF format free to use?

Yes. PDF is an open standard (ISO 32000), so anyone can create, open and share PDFs without paying, and every modern browser opens them. What usually costs money is editing software, which is why every iHatePDF tool is free. Learn more in What is a PDF?

Is it dangerous to open a PDF?

A PDF from a source you trust is safe to open. Files from unknown senders can contain harmful links or scripts aimed at outdated PDF readers. Keep your browser or PDF reader up to date, don't click links in unexpected PDFs, and be careful with files that ask you to enable content or sign in.
