When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruritania. What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves. Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all." Chicago Book Club

Wed, Oct 28 at 7pm · Chicago
Meet in Barbara's Bookstore on Tuesday, September 29th to discuss Scott W. Berg's "The Burning of the World"! Our book club will go from 7pm-8pm. "The Burning of the World" is 20% off at our store all month long if you need to grab a copy. Reading/finishing the book is not required, just come to chat! To get a feel for the book, here's the jacket description: "In the fall of 1871, Chicagoans knew they were due for the “big one”—a massive, uncontrollable fire that would decimate the city. It had been bone-dry for months, and a recent string of blazes had nearly outstripped the fire department’s already scant resources. Then, on October 8, a minor fire broke out in the barn of Irishwoman Kate Leary. A series of unfortunate mishaps and misunderstandings along with insufficient preparation and a high south-westerly wind combined to set the stage for an unmitigated catastrophe. The conflagration that spread from the Learys’ property quickly overtook the neighborhood, and before long the floating embers had been cast to the far reaches of the city. Nothing to the northeast was safe. Families took to the streets with every possession they could carry. Powerful gusts whipped the flames into a terrifying firestorm. The Chicago River boiled. Over the next forty-eight hours, Chicago fell victim to the largest and most destructive natural disaster the United States had yet endured. The effects of the Great Fire were devastating. But they were also transforming. Out of the ashes, faster than seemed possible, rose new homes, tenements, hotels, and civic buildings, as well as a new political order. The elite seized the reconstruction to crack down on vice, control the disbursement of vast charitable funds, and rebuild the city in their image. But the city’s working class recognized only a naked power grab that would challenge their traditions, hurt their chances to keep their hard-earned property, and move power out of the hands of elected officials and into private interests. As soon as the battle against the fire ended, another battle for the future of the city erupted between its entrenched business establishment and its poor and immigrant laborers and shopkeepers. An enrapturing account of the fire’s inexorable march and an eye-opening look at its aftermath, The Burning of the World tells the story of one of the most infamous calamities in history and the new Chicago it precipitated—a disaster that still shapes American cities to this day." Let’s Talk Shop(ing): Can We Shop Ethically?

Mon at 5:30pm · Chicago
What does it actually mean to shop sustainably, and is shopping “ethically” even as simple as we make it sound? Join us for an evening of conversation with Goli Young & Moriah Turner of The Notch Studio, exploring the complicated relationship between fashion, people, and the planet. We’ll talk about how traditional fashion supply chains work, what makes slow fashion different, and the tension between ethical sustainability and environmental sustainability. We’ll get into fabrics and fibers, why natural doesn’t always automatically mean “better,” the environmental impact of plastics and synthetics, and how to actually recognize quality in the clothes you buy. Most importantly, we’ll talk about how sustainability can be intersectional and what it looks like to make more informed choices without expecting perfection from the individual shopper. Come curious, bring your questions, and stay afterward for shopping, bites, drinks, and conversation with the community.

Gracey's Presents: Karl Kirkpatrick and Nora Kenny!

Sat, Nov 14 at 7pm · Chicago
Gracey's Presents is an intimate concert series spotlighting local Chicago artists and genre-pushing music. For this edition, we welcome Karl Kirkpatrick and Nora Kenny! Karl Kirkpatrick is a Chicago-based singersongwriter at the crossroads of Indie Rock and Americana. Ranging between the expressiveness of Jeff Buckley and the kick of The Replacements , Karl and the band (Henry Carpender, Phin Gleber, and Aval Stanley) have spent the past few years playing in Chicago DIY scenes and venues alike. His most recent release, an EP titled “momentum”, employs a garage band assembly to explore themes of love and escapism in a world rolling downhill. Chicago-based singer-songwriter Nora Kenny crafts evocative indie folk and alt-country music characterized by heartfelt lyricism and warm acoustic instrumentation. Her work, including the EP Stop Hangin' On Me, balances raw vulnerability with melodic hooks reminiscent of classic Americana storytelling. Emerging strongly within the independent touring circuit, she stands out for her magnetic and unpredictable stage presence.
