No account, ever

There is nothing to sign up for. No email address, no password, no verification link and nothing to cancel later.

Nothing to install

Every tool opens in the tab you already have. It works on a locked down work laptop, and it keeps working with the wifi off.

The catch

There isn't one, and here is why

Most free online tools are a form that sends your file to a server, does the work there and hands you a download. Servers cost money, so that model needs accounts to limit you, watermarks to upsell you and a paid tier at the end of it.

These do the work in the tab you already have open. The page loads once and from then on your own browser is doing the merging, converting and formatting. There is no server bill, so there is nothing to recover from you and no reason to put a sign up wall in front of anything.

It has a useful side effect. Your file never goes anywhere, and the tool keeps running if you go offline after the page has loaded.

Questions

Good to know

Are these really free?
Yes, and free means free. There is no trial, no credit card, no watermark on the output and no daily cap on how many times you can use a tool.
Do I have to sign up?
No. There is no sign up, no email box and no account at all. Open a tool and use it. We could not make you an account if we wanted to, because we do not run a server that could hold one.
How is this paid for, then?
It costs us almost nothing to run. The tools are just a web page your browser downloads once, so there are no servers doing the work and no bill at the end of the month. That is why there is no reason to charge you, show you ads or sell anything.
Is there a catch with the file size?
None that we impose. The practical ceiling is your own device's memory, so a very large file may be slow on an older phone but it will not be rejected or held back behind an upgrade.
Can I use the results commercially?
Yes. Your files are yours and we make no claim of any kind over what you make with them.
What happens to the files I open?
Nothing leaves your device. Each tool runs inside your own browser, so the file is opened, changed and saved locally rather than uploaded to us. You can check that in your browser's network tab, or by disconnecting from the internet once the page has loaded.
How is this different from the directory?
The directory is our list of free tools built by other people, and clicking one sends you to their website. Everything on this page we built ourselves, and it runs here without you leaving public.tools.

Built by other people

344 third party tools, checked by hand

When we have not built the thing you need, someone else probably has. These are free tools made by other people that we tried and can vouch for, and not one of them asks you to sign up. They live on their own sites, so these links take you off ours.
