fallow

Codebase intelligence for TypeScript and JavaScript.

One binary finds unused code, circular dependencies, duplication, complexity hotspots, boundary violations, and design-system styling drift. Fallow Cloud optionally adds production coverage: which functions run in production. Default static analysis is deterministic and uses no AI. It needs no TypeScript compiler or Node.js runtime. Reports have typed output contracts and traceable explanations.

Install

npm install --save-dev fallow # or: pnpm add -D fallow / yarn add -D fallow

This installs the fallow CLI plus the fallow-lsp and fallow-mcp launchers, so editor and agent integrations resolve the project-local binary instead of whatever happens to be on PATH. For one-off use, run npx fallow without installing. Other channels (cargo, Docker, prebuilt binaries) are covered in the installation guide.

Quick start

npx fallow # Full pipeline: dead code + duplication + health
npx fallow audit # Gate only what a PR changed: verdict pass/warn/fail
npx fallow health --score # 0 to 100 health score with a letter grade
npx fallow dupes # Duplication; modes strict, mild (default), weak, semantic
npx fallow fix --dry-run # Preview automatic cleanup

Output and exit codes

Add --format json --quiet to any command for one typed JSON document on stdout. Exit code 1 means findings, not failure; 0 is clean (or an audit pass or warn verdict); 2 is a validation or runtime error, reported as a JSON error envelope rather than a stack trace. License, coverage setup, network, and security-gate workflows use additional documented codes; read fallow schema.exit_codes instead of suppressing the process status.

Parsing the output in TypeScript? Import the typed shapes, version-pinned to the CLI you install:

import type { CheckOutput, FallowJsonOutput } from "fallow/types";

Every issue carries an actions[] array with an auto_fixable flag, so scripts and agents know which findings they can hand to fallow fix. The full contract lives at fallow.tools/docs.

What fallow reports

  • Unused files, exports, types, enum and class members, and dependencies
  • Circular dependencies and re-export cycles
  • Code duplication as clone families, across four detection modes
  • Complexity hotspots and a 0 to 100 health score
  • Architecture boundary violations, with zero-config presets
  • Design-system styling drift for CSS and CSS-in-JS (Sass/Less, CSS Modules, Tailwind, styled-components, Emotion, and more)
  • A changed-file PR gate with per-finding attribution (fallow audit)
  • Optional TypeScript checker evidence for exact symbol use, affected files, targeted tests, cross-file private type leaks, and public-signature coupling (--type-aware)
  • Optional production coverage with Fallow Cloud: hot paths, cold code, runtime-weighted health (licensed; a single local coverage capture is free)

Optional TypeScript semantic evidence

Default analysis stays Rust-native and syntactic. Use --type-aware when a cleanup or refactor needs exact checker-backed identity across aliases, re-exports, packages, or tests:

npx fallow dead-code --unused-class-members --type-aware --format json --quiet
npx fallow fix --type-aware --dry-run --format json --quiet
npx fallow dead-code --type-aware --symbol-impact src/api.ts:Client --format json --quiet
npx fallow health --type-aware --type-coupling --format json --quiet

This complements tsc --noEmit and Oxlint. It does not emit compiler diagnostics or duplicate local typed lint rules. If the optional companion cannot prove a result safely, fallow retains the finding and reports why. Required interface, abstract, and override members are removed from the findings. A class member is automatically fixable only with complete closed-world evidence and a matching declaration guard.

Built for agents

Agents can query symbol importers, usage evidence, PR changes, and available cleanup actions.

The bundled fallow-mcp server lives in node_modules/.bin/ when installed as a devDependency, so launch it through your package manager's runner:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fallow": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["--yes", "--package", "fallow", "fallow-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

--package fallow selects the npm package that provides the fallow-mcp launcher. For a project-local install, use "command": "pnpm" with "args": ["exec", "fallow-mcp"], or "command": "yarn" with "args": ["fallow-mcp"]. A globally installed fallow-mcp works as "command": "fallow-mcp" directly. See the MCP integration guide.

For a verified project-local install, npx fallow agent install registers the MCP server with npx --no fallow-mcp. It also writes the skill, an AGENTS.md task map, and the commit/push gate for every harness it detects (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor); --dry-run shows the plan first.

The package also ships two version-matched agent skills: skills/fallow for analysis and skills/fallow-setup for setting up code-quality tooling. fallow/capabilities.json mirrors fallow schema for tools that need CLI and issue-surface metadata without spawning the binary. TanStack Intent discovers the skills and the metadata from node_modules:

npx @tanstack/intent list
npx @tanstack/intent load fallow#fallow
npx @tanstack/intent load fallow#fallow-setup

Framework support

Over 100 built-in framework plugins covering Next.js, Nuxt, Remix, Qwik, SvelteKit, Gatsby, Astro, Angular, NestJS, AdonisJS, Ember, Expo Router, Vite, Webpack, Vitest, Jest, Playwright, Cypress, Storybook, ESLint, TypeScript, Tailwind, UnoCSS, Prisma, Drizzle, Convex, Turborepo, Hardhat, and more. Entry points are auto-detected from package.json, so the first run needs no configuration.

Configuration

Fallow starts without a config file. To customize the analysis, let fallow recommend propose a config from the detected stack, run fallow init, or create a config file in your project root.

fallow recommend is read-only. With --format json, it returns the full decision set for agents. It points TypeScript projects to the optional --type-aware pass without enabling it.

To create a config manually, use a file like this in your project root:

// .fallowrc.json
{
  "$schema": "./node_modules/fallow/schema.json",
  "entry": ["src/workers/*.ts", "scripts/*.ts"],
  "ignorePatterns": ["**/*.generated.ts"],
  "rules": {
    "unused-files": "error",
    "unused-exports": "warn",
    "unused-types": "off"
  }
}

$schema gives editors autocomplete and validation and has no effect on analysis. The npm package ships a version-aligned schema at ./node_modules/fallow/schema.json, so validation works offline with no editor trust prompt. TOML works too: fallow init --toml creates fallow.toml.
