String Utility Belt: free online string and text tools
Efficiently chain string utilities, preview every step, and export/share your pipeline.
Presets
Ready-made pipelines for jobs one tool can't do alone. Each shows every step with its output.
- Decode a SAML request or response — Paste a SAML redirect URL, a POST form body, a copied cURL command or a bare SAMLRequest or SAMLResponse value and read the message as indented XML, deflated (Redirect binding) or not (POST).
- Turn an Excel column into a SQL IN clause — Paste a column copied from Excel or Google Sheets and get a ready-to-run IN (…) list: whitespace trimmed, duplicates dropped, and every value escaped and quoted for your SQL dialect.
- Fix line breaks in text copied from a PDF — Paste text copied from a PDF and get running text back: broken lines joined, hyphenated words rejoined, page numbers removed and ligature characters spelled out, with blank-line paragraph breaks and list items kept.
- Decode a Helm release Secret — Paste a Helm 3 release Secret from kubectl get secret -o yaml, or just its data.release value, and read the user-supplied values and the rendered manifest that helm get values and helm get manifest would show.
- Unescape stringified JSON and pretty-print it — Paste JSON full of backslashes, quoted or not, stringified once or twice, and get indented JSON back. Text that is already valid JSON is only pretty-printed.
- Convert nested JSON to CSV — Paste an API response or a JSON array and get a spreadsheet-ready CSV: the records picked out of their envelope, nested objects and arrays spread into columns of their own, and headers renamed to snake_case.
Popular tools
Every utility also has its own page with a guide, worked examples and a playground. They all run in your browser: nothing you paste is uploaded.
- base64 encode — Encode a string or bytes to Base64 (no newlines).
- base64 decode — Decode a Base64 string to UTF‑8 text.
- url encode — encodeURIComponent for safe URL inclusion.
- url decode — decodeURIComponent for URL strings.
- json pretty — Parse input as JSON and pretty-print.
- json validate — Check whether the input is valid JSON and report the error message with its line, column and source excerpt; turn off strict to also accept JSON5-style comments, trailing commas and unquoted keys.
- jwt decode — Decode a JWT into its header, payload and signature with readable ISO dates for exp/iat/nbf — no signature check; the part option can narrow the result to just the header or payload.
- md5 hash — Compute the MD5 of the input. Strings -> hex, Bytes -> raw 16-byte digest.
- hash — Hash the input using WebCrypto (SHA‑1, SHA‑256, SHA‑384 or SHA‑512).
- uuid — Generate UUIDs (v4 random, v7 time-ordered, v1, nil or max) with optional uppercase, hyphens, braces and a seed for repeatable output.
- change case — Change letter casing to upper, lower, or title case.
- text diff — Diff the input against a second text by lines, words, or characters and render it as a unified, inline, side-by-side, or JSON diff.
- timestamp convert — Auto-detect a unix (s/ms/µs), ISO 8601, RFC 2822, HTTP-date, SQL, .NET ticks or Excel serial timestamp and convert it to iso, unix, unix-ms, rfc2822, http, sql, local or relative form — or all of them at once — in any IANA timezone.
- json to yaml — Convert JSON to YAML, with a configurable indent, wrapping line width, and optional alphabetical key sorting.
- csv to json — Parse RFC 4180 CSV (quoted fields, embedded newlines, "" escapes) into JSON, with delimiter auto-detection, optional header keys, value typing, trimming, and indent control.
- html entity encode — Escape text as HTML character references using named, decimal, or hex form, over a minimal, non-ASCII, or all-characters scope.
- regex explain — Explain a regular expression token by token in plain English, as an indented tree or as JSON, using the pattern param or the input itself (a /pattern/flags literal is understood).
- password generator — Generate passwords as random characters, pronounceable syllables, or word passphrases, with character-class, ambiguity and seed controls.
- lorem ipsum — Generate placeholder lorem ipsum text measured in paragraphs, sentences, words, or bytes, optionally wrapped in HTML paragraphs.
- sort lines — Sort lines alphabetically, numerically, naturally (v2 before v10), by length, by a column, or randomly.
- deduplicate lines — Remove duplicate lines, preserving first occurrence.
- text statistics — Count characters, graphemes, words, sentences, paragraphs, lines and bytes, with averages and the longest word or line, as JSON or a plain-text report.
- slug — Convert to a URL-friendly slug (ASCII kebab-case).
- sql format — Pretty-print a SQL query with a chosen dialect, keyword case, indent width, and blank lines between statements.
