My Fridge is an innovative app that lets you tell it what ingredients you have, and it would do all the work of finding you the perfect recipe, all from the comfort of your phone!

Inspiration

As a home cook myself, I always seem to never have enough supplies to make my dream meal, so I was thinking if there was a better way than looking through hundreds of websites and getting a mediocre result.

What it does

My Fridge is an app that takes in user information about what they have to cook. One method would be through a manual entering of ingredients, but we are also working on an innovative scanning entry method!

How I built it

I used Visual Studio Code and node.js to write the backend. The server was hosted on Google Cloud, and I connected to it mainly through http requests. The frontend was built in Android Studio, using Java.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge I faced was getting the end-to-end connection correct. I haven't really done full-stack web development before, and this was a challenge, especially the HTTP requests. Additionally, I didn't have enough time to fully create everything that I wanted, and I struggled a lot with getting the Google Vision to work.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I do feel like I learned a lot about web development and connecting systems wider than your own personal computer. I am really happy with this project, and I definitely want to expand upon this in the future.

What I learned

I learned that it is VERY hard to make a server and HTTP requests are kinda a nightmare, but overall I learned how tiring it is to try to create everything, especially within a 24 hour period.

What's next for My Fridge

New features like the scanning, Scalability, and even sleeker UI!
