WHAT IS DR

What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' relative 0–100 metric for the strength of a website's backlink profile. It considers the strength of linking domains and how they distribute links. DR is not a Google ranking factor. This Domain Rating checker returns the currently available provider observation rather than Ahrefs' complete backlink product.

Relative

Compare Like with Like

A lower observation is meaningful only against relevant peers and the same provider. Inspect the underlying links before deciding what action is needed.

DR

Use DR for a Domain

Mid-range observations have no universal good or bad meaning. Niche, competitor set, provider coverage, and observation date all matter.

Context

Inspect the Context

A higher observation means a stronger backlink profile in Ahrefs' relative model. Compare relevant domains instead of treating one band as universally strong.

DR vs DA — What's the Difference?

Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' metric that measures backlink strength on a 0–100 scale. Domain Authority (DA) is Moz's metric for ranking potential on a 1–100 scale. Both are useful, but they use different algorithms and data sources. Our free DR checker uses Ahrefs data, while our DA checker uses Moz data.

How is Domain Rating Calculated?

Referring Domains

DR evaluates linking domains within Ahrefs' graph and accounts for how each source distributes links across other domains. A source's headline DR alone does not determine what one link contributes.

Logarithmic Scale

DR uses a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100. Moving from DR 20 to 30 is exponentially easier than moving from 70 to 80. Each point increase represents a significant jump in link authority.

Referring-Domain Diversity

Links from additional independent domains can broaden a backlink profile, but source relevance, the linking page, and outbound distribution still matter. A raw link or domain count is not a quality verdict.

DR vs UR

DR measures domain-level authority. URL Rating (UR) measures page-level authority. A page on a high-DR site can have a low UR if few external sites link to that specific page.

Common DR Misconceptions

DR is a Google ranking factor

No. DR is an Ahrefs metric. Google uses its own algorithms to evaluate backlinks and authority.

DR equals traffic

A high DR doesn't guarantee traffic. You need relevant backlinks and quality content. DR measures link authority, not content quality or user engagement.

DR can only go up

DR can decrease if you lose high-quality backlinks or if referring domains lose their own DR. Regular monitoring with a DR checker helps catch these changes.

DR is best for comparison

Absolutely. DR shines when comparing sites in the same niche. A DR 50 food blog and a DR 50 tech site have similar link authority, even if they compete in different markets.

When a Domain Rating Check Helps

1

Track Your Link Building Progress

Record comparable DR observations over time, then inspect new and lost links before attributing a change to your work. A rising score alone does not prove a campaign succeeded.

2

Size Up Your Competitors

Use domain-level DR as one clue when reviewing competitors, then compare the actual ranking pages, search intent, content, and page-level links. Do not turn a DR gap into a keyword-difficulty cutoff.

3

Evaluate Link Opportunities

Use DR to prioritize link prospects for review, then inspect the exact page, topical relevance, audience, editorial placement, and outbound links before deciding whether the opportunity is worthwhile.

4

Spot Negative Changes Early

A DR change can reflect lost or newly discovered links, changes to linking domains, outbound distribution, or a provider recalculation. It is not evidence of a Google penalty.

How to Improve Your Domain Rating

To improve the backlink strength summarized by DR, focus on editorial references that are useful, relevant, and independently earned:

Create Link-Worthy Content

Publish original research, comprehensive guides, free tools, and data that others want to cite. Quality content naturally attracts backlinks over time.

Build Relationships

Build genuine relationships with relevant publishers, communities, and experts. Editorial links from useful collaborations matter more than chasing a source's headline DR alone.

Diversify Your Backlink Profile

Look for legitimate editorial references from additional relevant domains. Use the limited sample in our referring domains checker to discover sources for deeper review, not as a complete backlink audit.

Investigate Suspicious Links

Investigate suspicious links in their page and site context. A spam score can help prioritize review, but it does not prove a link is harmful or justify disavowal by itself.

DR changes only after providers discover and recalculate the relevant link graph. There is no fixed timeline, and a score movement alone does not prove that one campaign caused it.

HOW TO USE

How to Check DR of a Website

Use Single for one current Domain Rating observation or Bulk for a sequential multi-domain comparison. Large lists take longer; unavailable, stale, and provider-failure states remain separate outcomes.

1

Enter a Domain

Enter a public domain, such as ahrefs.com, and request the currently available Domain Rating observation from the provider.

2

View Your DR Score

Review the current, stale, unavailable, or failed state. A trend appears only when a matching eligible Domain Listing has Stored DR observations.

3

Embed a DR Badge

Eligible Domain Listings can copy an optional badge embed. The badge displays the latest Stored DR available for the matching listing and links back to its public page.

What You Get With Each DR Check

Traffic Overview

See monthly visits, bounce rate, pages per visit, and top traffic sources. Understand how much traffic a domain gets beyond just DR.

Backlink Profile

View referring domains count and top linking sites. See which domains link to your target and discover link-building opportunities.

Get contextual interpretation of DR scores. Understand what the number means for your specific niche and competitive landscape.

Tips for Accurate DR Checks

1.

Enter the root domain

Use the main domain (e.g., ahrefs.com) rather than subdomains. The tool will normalize www and https prefixes automatically.

2.

Compare apples to apples

DR is most meaningful when compared to competitors in your niche. A DR 30 is strong for a local business, weak for a global publication.

3.

Check related metrics together

DR alone doesn't tell the full story. Check Domain Authority and Spam Score alongside DR for additional provider-specific context.

4.

Monitor trends over time

Save comparable observations if you need a trend. A score change alone does not prove that a particular SEO action caused it.

WHY USE

Why Check Your Domain Rating?

DR can support relative backlink-profile comparison when provider and period are held constant. It is one vendor metric, not a Google ranking factor or a complete link audit.

Assess Backlink Authority

Use DR to compare relative backlink-profile strength. Validate rankings and traffic separately; a higher DR does not guarantee better search performance.

Competitor Analysis

Compare relevant competitors with the same provider and period, then inspect the specific links and pages behind any meaningful gap.

Link Building

Use DR as one screening clue, then inspect topic, audience, editorial placement, linking page, and real traffic before pursuing a link.

Build Trust with DR Badges

Display the latest Stored DR from a matching Domain Listing with an optional badge. Treat it as a linked metric display, not an identity, security, or official Ahrefs verification seal.

Free Single and Bulk DR Checks — No Ahrefs Login

Use the current Single lookup without an account and compare multiple domains sequentially in Bulk. Results depend on the available third-party provider and may be stale or unavailable; full backlink research and history require a dedicated product.

Who Uses Our DR Checker?

SEO Professionals

Compare current DR observations and triage link opportunities. Use Ahrefs or another full backlink product when you need complete indexes, filters, exports, or history.

Website Buyers

Use DR as one screening clue before purchasing a domain, then verify ownership, traffic, links, penalties, trademarks, and revenue with appropriate first-party evidence.
