What is the DeCal?

Our DeCal is a student-led course connected to EnableTech’s work in accessibility and human-centered design. Students learn about assistive technology, inclusive design, and the process of turning community needs into thoughtful project ideas and prototypes.

The course is a great way to get introduced to accessibility-focused design, especially if you are curious about EnableTech but want a more structured learning environment.

Our mission

EnableTech’s mission is to serve the community by designing with people, not just for them. We work with project partners and community members to better understand lived experiences, accessibility barriers, and real needs before building solutions.

We believe assistive technology should be practical, respectful, and shaped by the people it is meant to support. Through our projects, we aim to make engineering more community-centered, accessible, and impactful.

About the club

EnableTech is an interdisciplinary student organization at UC Berkeley where students design, prototype, invent, and improve accessibility-focused technology. Our project teams often work with project partners, who are typically individuals with a disability, condition, or impairment, to better understand real needs and develop meaningful solutions with community impact.

Students in EnableTech build skills in needfinding, CAD, prototyping, fabrication, testing, documentation, teamwork, and communication while learning how to center usability, accessibility, dignity, and real human needs in the design process.

What we do

Design

Identify needs, brainstorm concepts, and develop practical accessibility-focused ideas.

Prototype

Create physical and digital prototypes using CAD, fabrication, testing, and iteration.

Collaborate

Work in project teams with students from different backgrounds, majors, and skill levels.
