Complete guided setup to get extra storage on your free plan

Proton Mail is free to use if you have just one email address, but storage is limited to just 500 MB, which will fill up fast if you are receiving messages with large attachments. You can upgrade to a Plus subscription for $4 per month to get 15 GB of storage—the same amount available to most Google users—but if you don't want to pay anything, you can at least double your limit to 1 GB by completing Proton's onboarding process within 18 days of signing up. Look for a Get more storage option on the left sidebar of your mailbox, and click an action to complete the task. Once you've finished the checklist, you'll unlock an additional 500 MB of storage on your account.

Reserve an email address for your child in their name

If you have a relatively common name, it's likely that many email addresses using simple conventions, such as firstname.lastname, have already been claimed. By the time your kids are old enough to set up their own accounts, pickings may be even slimmer. You can go ahead and reserve a username through Proton Mail for them, and they have 15 years to activate it. Once they're old enough, they'll already have a private email set up. Choose an address and pay $1 toward the Proton Foundation, then save the voucher to share with your child down the line.

Use Easy Switch to migrate external email addresses

If you're moving to Proton Mail from a different email provider or simply want all of your messages in one inbox, you can use Proton's Easy Switch feature to connect with and import from Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, and any other provider that allows IMAP access. Once Easy Switch is on, you'll be able to receive and send messages from your external address within Proton, and any mail sent to another Proton user from that address will be end-to-end encrypted. You'll retain copies of messages in your external inbox, so you don't need to make the full transition immediately. Easy Switch can also migrate your contacts and calendars. Go to Settings > Import via Easy Switch, choose your email service, and follow the prompts.

Customize the Undo Send timer to recall emails

We've all sent emails we wish we could take back thanks to a typo we didn't notice, an attachment we forgot to add, or a message we regret. Proton Mail has a delayed send feature that gives you up to 20 seconds to change your mind before your email is out of your hands. The timer is set at 10 seconds by default, but you can adjust it down to 0 or 5 seconds or up to 20. Go to Settings > Messages and composing, scroll down to the Composing section, and choose your desired time from the Undo send dropdown.

Create aliases to filter mail to specific folders

There are plenty of good reasons to use an email alias, from keeping your primary address private to easily filtering messages from mailing lists. Proton Mail supports unlimited plus addressing, meaning you can simply add a plus symbol and word after your username to create a new email—such as [username]+newsletters@proton.me—and receive messages in your regular inbox (with filters if you set them up). This can be done when you sign up for an account or add your email to a list. Alternatively, you can create a randomly generated email alias, which keeps your username hidden. Free users get up to 10, while paid subscribers can create unlimited aliases. On the web interface, click the security shield icon, go to Hide-my-email aliases, and click New alias.

Add a password to encrypt emails to non-Proton users

Messages between Proton users are automatically encrypted end to end, but if your recipient doesn't use Proton Mail, you can set up a password for your emails to keep them private. Replies to password-protected emails are also encrypted (though your reply to that reply will require you to re-enable encryption). When you compose your message, click the padlock icon in the bottom toolbar and enter a password and password hint. You can set an expiration date as well. Note that you'll need to share the password with the recipient separately.

Set expiration timers to automatically delete emails from recipients’ inboxes

Another Proton Mail security feature is the expiration timer, which will auto-delete emails you send and receive after a set period, preventing messages from hanging around in inboxes and sent folders indefinitely. Messages that you send to other Proton Mail users as well as password-protected emails to those outside of Proton can be set to expire. If you have a paid account, you can also set emails you receive to self-destruct (in addition to auto-delete for messages in trash). Click the hourglass icon at the bottom of the message and set the expiration date and time. If you are sending a password-protected email to a non-Proton user, check the box. Then hit Set.

Strip metadata to protect your privacy with sent images

When you take a photo, image metadata may reveal locations, times and dates, and other information that can be used to track you if it falls into the wrong hands. Proton Mail can strip that out for sent images, so you can share photos via email without giving any unnecessary data away. When you attach an image to an email draft, choose Remove metadata when prompted.

Turn on Message Content Search to build a local and searchable index of your emails

Because of Proton's encryption, the standard search feature reads only names, dates, email addresses, and subject lines. If you want to include message content, you'll need to enable the feature that builds a local index in your browser, protecting it from intrusion unless someone has physical access to your device. Click the search bar at the top of your inbox on the web app and tap Enable next to Search message content. Click Enable to confirm. Note that indexing does require storage space, but once complete, it'll automatically update as long as your browser is open.

Activate your short domain to get a shorter, simpler address

By default, Proton Mail addresses end in @proton.me (unless you connect your own domain). But users on paid plans have the option to add a short domain, which is simply [username]@pm.me. You can send messages from either, and both route to your inbox. The shorter address is easier to remember and share, such as when you're giving our your email over the phone. To enable it, go to Settings > Identity and addresses. You must be a paid subscriber to activate a short domain address—if you downgrade to the free plan, you will still be able to receive (but not send) messages sent to your @pm.me address.

Why this DeWalt saw is worth buying during Labor Day

DeWalt makes the best corded compound miter saw on the market as well, so it’s not surprising that its cordless version is just as good. The 12-inch cutting surface allows you to cut pressure-treated lumber up to a four-by-four, or molding as wide as 12 inches. The dust collection bag will capture most of your sawdust, so it’s also a good choice for air quality.

In addition to its cutting abilities, the DeWalt 20-volt cordless compound miter saw also has regenerative breaking technology that captures energy from slowing the blade down and redistributes it to power the battery. This allows it to make up to 153 cuts in a four-by-four or 371 cuts in lighter material like MDF molding with a standard 20-volt, 8-amp-hour battery. For home use, that means you likely won’t need to recharge the battery until you’re packing up for the day.

The LED light over the cutting surface illuminates your work, but it also helps you line up your cut. It's one of my favorite things about DeWalt miters saws because it makes getting a precise cut easier, even when you're not working in ideal conditions.

This morning, upstart smart glasses company Even Realities launched Even Hub, an open app store and developer platform for its G2 line of display style smart glasses. This could be the first salvo in a war between open- and closed-platform display smart glasses.

On one side is Meta. The Goliath of the smart glasses market has thus far taken a completely closed approached to its newish Display glasses: Meta decides what your smart glasses can do and determines what apps you can access. The David to Meta's Goliath is Even Realities, a boutique tech company that just launched a storefront with over 50 apps made by third-party developers, so users can decide for themselves what to install and what to ignore.

While the market for AR-style smart glasses with displays is currently limited to tech heads and early adopters, if the HUD-style glasses catch on (and both companies maintain their current strategies) the winner could determine how much control users will have over their augmented futures.

Competing strategies for display-style smart glasses

In terms of total market share, Meta and Even Realities aren't in the same universe. Meta's market capitalization is approximately $1.47 trillion, and its line of Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses make up about 82% of the smart glasses market. According to Prospero, Even Realities is worth an estimated $10 million—though a spokesperson for Even Realities tells me their valuation is a lot higher, at least $500 million.

Within the niche of display-integrated glasses, however, Meta and Even Realities are peers: Estimates for 2025-2026 suggest that Meta has sold around 20,000 of its high end Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses. Prospero's numbers suggest Even Realities has moved between 10,000 and 25,000 pairs of its G2 glasses, while the company itself estimates its G2 sales reach into the "hundreds of thousands," the spokesperson said.

The two companies are taking very different approaches to selling "glasses with a HUD." Meta's Display spectacles are priced at $799 and are designed to do everything its popular non-display glasses do, with the addition of a full-color, high quality video, and a distinctive, Ray-Ban look. Even Realities' $599 G2 glasses don't have an onboard camera or audio, and the mono-color display is housed in a very discreet frame that no one will suspect is anything but a "normal" pair of specs. They're designed to be fashionable, functional, everyday glasses that can also project a map in front of your eyes or help you con bartenders when you need them to. Here's a review of the last generation of Even Realities glasses for more info.

The most important divide between these companies might prove to be their approach to software. All technology is on a continuum between "open" and "closed," and Meta's smart glasses have, so far, been far into the restricted part of the spectrum. You get a highly curated experience, with Meta acting as the arbiter of what is installed on your face computer, whether you're rocking Display glasses or Ray-Ban Metas. You don't download apps, you toggle "experiences" on and off. You can choose to disable or enable Apple Music, but you can't choose to listen to music on a new platform developed by a third party. You can't delete core features you don't want. Even something as basic as changing the wake-up words for the AI is off-limits; it's "Hey, Meta," or it's nothing.

Even Realities approach is semi-open, like Apple's App store. It's not the "anything goes" approach of Linux, but you can peruse Even Realities' library of approved apps and choose whether or not you need an in-glasses EPUB Reader, a Chess game, or a charge indicator for your Tesla. Even Realities lets you remove even core features you don't use on its glasses too.

It's worth noting that Meta isn't fundamentally opposed to third-party development. The company's Meta Horizon Store for the Quest line of VR headsets is a massive, vibrant marketplace with everything from high-end games to tiny, janky tools on offer, and the company shut down much of its first-party VR development, while pledging to continue supporting indie devs. So it's possible/probable that Meta is waiting for the hardware to mature before opening a more open store for its glasses, or just adding a "Display" section to the existing Horizon Store.

Open isn't necessarily better

While the knee-jerk reaction might be to conclude that the choice offered by an open system is more desirable than a closed one, that hasn't always been the case in the tech world. Nintendo dominated video games in the 1980s by maintaining strict quality controls over games released on its NES, and few kids wanted the more "open" competing systems. Adobe's Flash dominated everything the "open web" had to offer in the early 2000s, only dying when another relatively closed system, Apple's iPhone, refused to support it. Speaking of Apple, its iOS devices account for 63% of the American smart phone market, while the nearest competitor, the more open Android, is perpetually second. Time, as they say, will tell whether consumers prefer a curated experience, a modular, open one, or even want glasses with a HUD at all.

There's no arguing the fact that tech is expensive right now. The memory crisis has pushed companies to raise prices on products across the board, and smartphones are no exception. If you're in the market for a new phone, you might be feeling that crunch, and while you can certainly weigh carrier promotions and different payment plans, you shouldn't overlook these Labor Day discounts. Apple is about to announce a slate of new iPhones, so it might not be the best time to invest in a new device from the company. Typically I wouldn't recommend buying a five-year-old iPhone, but this is a special circumstance. Best Buy currently has refurbished iPhone 13 minis on sale for $224, $151 below the usual list price of $375. (Its original MSRP was much higher, mind you.) If you miss how small smartphones used to be, this might be a great pickup. The 13 mini was Apple's last "small" iPhone, and unless the market changes in a big way, the company will likely never make something like it again. Apple still supports its A15 Bionic chip, and likely will for at least a couple more years. (The iPhone 11, which was released two years prior, still supports iOS 27.) Customize your AI to create a "second brain"

This project really highlights the possibilities of Even Realities glasses. G2's come with Even AI ready to go, but you're not limited to it. Not only can you use the settings in the app to redirect the AI to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or another LLM, you can build a custom AI for your needs. For instance, Constella founder Tejas Sharma was frustrated by Even AI's inability to remember things, so they built a "second brain" by re-routing the AI to a layered version of Constella (an open knowledge base) running on their network.

Running Second Brain instead of Even AI means you can say something like, "Remember to pick up the dry cleaning every Wednesday," and it will be saved to your knowledge base. Later you can ask, "what was I supposed to do on Wednesday?" out loud, and a full AI agent searches your memory (using hybrid vector and keyword search), pulls in your connected tools if relevant, and hands you back a real composed answer formatted to fit cleanly on the lens.

You can also use meeting mode, where your glasses stream your mic and transcribe what's said onto the lens seconds behind the conversation. While you're still talking, the backend quietly digs through your memory, follows relevant connections, checks the web if it's useful, and surfaces a synthesized insight—which is a little like thinking. So if you're in a meeting and a coworker says, "Can we push the squash game until Wednesday?" your glasses cross-reference the statement against your memory in the background and silently surface: "Wednesday is dry cleaning pickup."

Second Brain was uploaded to the G2's Even Hub so you could use it as is, but Sharma's put the whole integration layer on GitHub, so if you're comfortable with some Python, you can see exactly how it talks to the glasses and build a variant on top of your own knowledge base.

Two ways to use G2's for instant two-factor authentication

We all know we should be using two-factor authentication (2FA), but grabbing your phone, unlocking it, and pulling up Messenger every time you want to log into Slack is a pain. There are two ways to make this easier:

• No software method: Open the Even app on your phone, go to Settings > Notifications, and enable notifications. When an SMS message arrives, you'll be able to read the number floating in front of you. Type it in and you "two-factored" without pulling out your phone.

• The software solution: A developer in the Even Realities community created a dedicated app for this, 2Factor. Instead of waiting for a ping, you scan your 2FA QR codes into the app during setup. When it's time to log in, you can pull up your constantly updating, time-based OTP (one-time password) tokens directly from the glasses' menu. It is essentially Google Authenticator built straight into your eyeballs.

Turn your glasses into your own coding supervisor

If you use autonomous AI coding agent Claude Code to build software, you know the biggest hassle isn't the AI writing the code, it's "babysitting" it. AI agents constantly pause to request permission before executing commands or editing files, tethering you to your keyboard with the simple job of saying, "yes" or "no." With the G2’s native Terminal Mode, you can mirror your computer’s terminal directly onto your glasses and act as a supervisor while grabbing coffee, pacing the room, or knitting.

• Install the CLI bridge: On your computer, open your terminal and install the official Even package globally: npm install -g @evenrealities/even-terminal.

• Launch your session: Start your AI coding agent on your computer, then run even-terminal. A pairing QR code will print directly inside your terminal window.

• Pair your glasses: Open the Even Realities app on your phone, go to Settings > Terminal Mode, and scan the QR code off your computer screen to link the session.

• Supervise on the move: Your computer's live terminal logs will now stream straight to your heads-up display in real time. Whenever your AI agent hits a checkpoint or asks for permission to execute a script, the prompt pops up in your line of sight—allowing you to approve the action using voice commands or glasses gestures so the build keeps moving forward.

Learn to bow correctly with Ojigi Coach

If you're panicking because you've been invited to a traditional chakai tea gathering in Kanazawa tomorrow, and you don't know anything about Japanese etiquette, try Ojigi Coach. It's an app from the Even Hub that offers in-depth training and practice for ojigi, Japanese bowing. You'll learn the correct angle for each of the three main bow types, how long to keep your head down, and what situations call for you to bust out an eshaku, a keirei, or a saikeirei.

That would be enough, but it also lets you test your bowing skills by presenting real-life choose-a-bow situations like "you greet your boss in the morning" or "you meet a former teacher after a long time." You bow, then your glasses' accelerometer and inertial measurement unit track your bow's angle and duration and offer you pointers. It's not only a fascinating glimpse into a tiny aspect of another culture, but it's fun: trying to get your bows correct is a blast. Ojigi Coach is representative of many of the most interesting apps on the Even Hub: perhaps not obviously useful to many people, but essential to a few.

Create instant subtitles for TV and movies and hear dialogue in a noisy room

The standard G2 Translate app is geared for bilingual conversations, but there's a simple way to turn it into a private subtitle machine for foreign films, anime, and TV shows: open the Translate app, set the language, and start watching a Korean soap opera. But you can make it even better.

• Switch your mic source: By default, the glasses use their built-in microphones to pick up voices. Open the Translate feature in the Even app and look in the upper right corner. Tap the microphone icon to switch the sound source from the Even G2 to your phone's microphone.

• Place your phone: Set your phone down near your TV's soundbar or your laptop's speakers so it can capture the cleanest audio.

• Pro tip: If you want to learn the language of the movie you're watching, give your glasses' touchpad a single tap. This toggles the display from "Half-Screen" (just the translation) to "Full-Screen" (which shows both the original foreign text and your translated text simultaneously).

Not only does this let you understand a foreign language, but you can use the same microphone hack to "hear" a TV in a noisy place. Set Translate to "English to English" (or use Conversate), then set your phone next to a distant TV speaker, and you'll be able to "hear" the TV from anywhere nearby.

Control your computer with your voice

Remember how Spock used to talk to the ship's computer in Star Trek? It's finally real. Even Hub app OcuClaw is a native OpenClaw client built for the G2. If you install one Claw on your glasses and the other on your PC or Mac, you can give your G2's AI the ability to interact directly with your computer's operating system. Once it's set up, you can use the G2's built-in microphone to issue complex commands, like "Computer, open my last downloaded PDF and email it to Sarah," or "Play my lofi playlist on Spotify." The agent on your computer executes the clicks and keystrokes, and you get a real-time status update floating in your heads-up display. It's a hands-free, AI-powered remote control for your desktop, and the possibilities are limitless. Just be warned that installing any agentic AI program on your computer leaves you vulnerable to attack via prompt injection. Try this one only if you understand the risks.

Turn your morning walk into a birdwatching session with Birdie

You don't have to be a birder to want to know what's making that racket in the tree above you. Birdie, a lightweight Even Hub app from a solo developer, listens to bird sounds through your G2's mic and identifies bird species using BirdNET—the same open-source bird-sound recognition model used by "serious" birding tools. Start a listening pass, hold still a few seconds, and when it gets a confident match, the species' common name, scientific name, and a field-guide photo pop up on your HUD. It's not doing anything a bird-identifying phone app like Merlin couldn't do, but it does it better. Since it listens in the background, you don't have to whip out your phone and point it at a branch when you see a grackle; instead, you just get your bird information fed directly into your eyeballs.

Never forget a person with the What's Their Face app

A lot of people are up in arms over facial recognition software being added to Meta glasses, but how about voice recognition? What's Their Face is an app on the Even Hub that uses voice recognition to act as a digital Rolodex for your acquaintances, aiming to solve the dreaded "cocktail party problem" of "what is their name??"

It works like this: You record a five-second clip of a person speaking and attach it to a name and an information card that can contain job titles, email addresses, or anything else you want. A few days later, when you run into that person and you've forgotten their name, your glasses will flash the closest matching voice prints so you can pretend you knew all along. If you have privacy concerns, this is a memory aid, not a privacy invasion tool. All the computation is done on the device, and no information is pulled from online sources and connected to a person you meet—you can only enter what you know about a person. No information is sent anywhere either, so it can't create a universal database of names so you'd "recognize" people you haven't met.

Convince people you're the smartest person alive

When I first got G1 Even Reality glasses, I immediately used them to trick a bartender out of a drink by offering to answer any trivia question, then correctly naming FW Murnau's follow-up film to 1927's Sunrise. (My glasses tell me it's 4 Devils, released in 1928.) This kind of mild flim-flammery is even easier with the second generation, thanks to Conversate, G2's always-listening mode that quietly transcribes conversation and surfaces context in real time. You can use this easily to convince people you are a math wiz, or you know the day of the week they were born based on the date, or that you have memorized the name, number, and position of everyone who has ever played for the Cleveland Browns.

Like most magic tricks, the mechanics are simple: turn on Conversate and let it listen for a question and feed you an answer only you will see, although you might have to repeat the question if Conversate's AI doesn't "pick it up" when it's first said. The hack here is really the performance: being able to repeat a question back and make it sound natural, reading the screen without looking like you're reading the screen, dealing with any "pauses" in the AI by realistically looking like you're thinking, then waiting a beat to make the answer seem natural. If you decide you like jovially deceiving people and you want to make it your career, check out sybil sight, a "mentalism operating system" for Even Realities G2 glasses. It's not cheap, and they don't tell you how it works exactly because a magician's secrets are only unlocked with cash, but I'm picturing a way more elaborate version of the tricks described above.

Sync up your band with G2 glasses

The great thing about G2 glasses is how many very specific problems they solve, like making sure your band knows what chord to play when. Here's how to never have to say, "OK, the next chord is E minor" again so you can just rock out:

• Get a pair of G2 glasses for everyone in the group. (Yeah, it's a high bar to clear.)

• Have everyone download QMe Prompter and install it on their phones.

• Have everyone set the app to stream content directly to G2 glasses.

• Use the app's "group jam" feature to link everyone over wifi. When the leader pulls up a chord chart, it instantly loads lyrics and chords onto everyone's phones, which beams it to their spectacles.

• The app has hands-free scrolling that can be set by BPM, a foot pedal, or you can use the voice-follow feature that listens to the singer and scrolls the lyrics in time, so everyone is on the same page.

• Pro-tip: Your band probably needs the Even Hub's Tuner app too.

Use Conversate and never take notes in a meeting again

If you've ever left a work meeting thinking, "wait, am I supposed to file the TPS reports, or is it Gary's week?" consider Conversate. I don't multi-task well, so listening while taking notes can be difficult. Conversate solves that problem.

Here's how it works: You hit the start button on the app, and the AI listens and transcribes everything anyone says in real time. The text is just out of your eyesight unless you glance up at it, so it isn't distracting but if someone asks a factual question, you'll get a silent answer in a pop-up window in your glasses. If you share this fact, it can make you look very smart. Or like a know-it-all, so use wisely. If someone says a person's or a company's name, you get a pop-up that tells you who/what they are too. Usually this is useless (I already know what Google is and who Jesus Christ is), but occasionally, it gives needed context.

When the meeting is over, you can check out a summary of what was discussed, and Conversate will highlight anything that looks like a task for you. You can then take those tasks and migrate them to your glasses' to-do list with a click, so you have a checkable list of action items floating before your eyes whenever you want it.

I realize that all of these functions could be done with a number of smart phone apps, but with Conversate, you keep your phone in your pocket—much more unobtrusive.

How to use Conversate to win bar bets and fake being smart

I used the last generation of Even Realities smart glasses to win a drink from a bartender, and Conversate makes this kind of skullduggery even easier. It's constantly listening for questions and feeding you answers, so if you're a dishonest person, you can totally rule at trivia night, impress your friends with your human calculator skills, or tell everyone the day of the week they were born. An added trickery bonus: G2s don't look like smart glasses, and if you pair them with the ring controller, no one will ever know that you are cheating your way through life.

How to have fun at parties with Conversate

This last use really depends on who you hang out with, but in the right crowd, Conversate becomes a hilarious party game. It's funny to read the AI's stilted definitions for common terms back to people, a beat behind the conversation. It's fun when your friends start saying obscure names to see whether your spectacles will tell you who they are. It's fun for people to invent "action items" that you will supposedly have to do later too. Everyone at the party will call you a nerd, but they will still want to try out your glasses. Are they secretly jealous of your cutting-edge techness? Probably not, to be honest. Anyway, when you are finished hanging out with your friends, Conversate will translate the party's banter and small talk into "corporate-speak" summaries, which I find delightful.

The Lenovo Idea Tab is $189.99 at Best Buy, down from $299.99. That $110 discount works out to around 37% off, and this particular package includes two accessories you’d ordinarily have to buy separately: a Lenovo Tab Pen and folio case.

The tablet has an 11-inch 2.5K display with a 90Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and four Dolby Atmos speakers. It’s a reliable, affordable option for students who want to take handwritten notes without adding a separate stylus. It runs Android 15 and supports up to 12 hours of use, although it doesn’t offer cellular connectivity.

In addition, Lenovo Tab One is $99.99 at Best Buy, down from $169.99. This is a 41% discount and the lowest entry price in this roundup. Its 8.7-inch HD display, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage are modest compared to other models, so this isn’t a laptop replacement. It makes more sense as a compact tablet for e-books, videos, recipes, travel, or basic apps for kids. Spending another $90 on the Idea Tab will get you a much sharper screen, double the RAM, more storage, and included accessories.

Apple’s rarely discounted iPads are up to $100 off during Amazon's Labor Day sale

The 11-inch iPad with the A16 chip is $399 at Amazon, saving shoppers $50 off its current $449 price. It comes with 128GB of storage, an 11-inch 2360-by-1640 display, USB-C connectivity, and 12MP front and rear cameras. Apple raised the tablet’s regular price in June, so $399 isn’t its lowest historical price, but it is a solid post-price increase discount. This model is perfect for everyday streaming, browsing, video calls, and schoolwork if you don’t need laptop-level processing power.

For heavier workloads, the 11-inch M4 iPad Air is $649 at Amazon, down from $749. The M4 processor makes this a much better fit for editing, illustration, multitasking, and more demanding games. It also supports Apple Intelligence, Wi-Fi 7, Apple Pencil Pro, and Apple’s Magic Keyboard. Since Apple increased the iPad Air’s price in June, $649 is the lowest available price. 

Samsung Galaxy Tablets are up to $200 off and come with an S Pen

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE is $449.99 at Amazon, down from $549.99—and unlike an iPad, Samsung includes its S Pen in the box. It has a 10.9-inch display, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a microSD slot that supports up to 2TB of additional storage. Its IP68 dust- and water-resistance also makes it less vulnerable to everyday spills than most tablets. This is the strongest midrange Android deal here for note-taking, drawing, and general productivity.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra is $1,099.99 at Best Buy, saving $200 on its $1,299.99 regular price. Its 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display provides significantly more workspace than a typical tablet. It comes with 12GB of RAM, 256GB of expandable storage, an included S Pen, and IP68 protection. If you specifically want an oversized Android tablet for drawing, media editing, or multitasking, this is your best bet. Otherwise, more casual users can save hundreds with the S10 FE.

This paper-like TCL tablet is over $100 off

The TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus is $279.99 at Amazon, down from $369.99. Its standout feature is the 11.5-inch 2.2K NXTPAPER display, which has a matte, low-glare finish and switches between full-color, color-paper, and ink-paper modes. If you want the visual comfort of an e-reader and the ability to draw realistically without sacrificing the versatility of a full Android tablet, the NXTPAPER 11 Plus is a strong choice.

You also get a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM, a generous 256GB of storage, four speakers, and an 8,000mAh battery. Its midrange processor isn’t intended for demanding games or professional video editing, but can handle streaming, browsing, productivity apps, and everyday multitasking with ease. Amazon generally has the broadest selection of Labor Day tech deals, including discounts on tablets, TVs, headphones, smart home devices, and charging accessories. Best Buy is particularly competitive for premium televisions, laptops, and Samsung tablets, while Walmart is worth checking for budget devices. The best retailer ultimately depends on the product and what’s in stock.

Is it better to shop Labor Day sales online or in-store?

Shopping online is usually better because it makes it easier to compare prices, specs, and stock across multiple retailers. Online shoppers also have access to a wider selection of colors and configurations, plus price-tracking tools.

Browser password managers only work within the browser

If you store your passwords in your browser, it can fill your credentials on websites within the browser itself. (If you're an Android user, Google Password Manager also syncs to your device and works across any browser or app.) But if you use multiple browsers or want to log into apps on your iPhone or PC, you'll have to manually copy and paste your password from the browser into those form fields—not ideal, from a standpoint of both convenience and security.

Browser password managers are more vulnerable to security risks

Browser password management is, on a basic level, secure: Google uses the same AES encryption in transit and at rest that many dedicated password managers do, and allows it you to add biometric authentication for auto-filling credentials. However, they're not zero-knowledge by default: Google manages your encryption key unless you enable on-device encryption so that your vault can only be unlocked on your device, by you, with your Google password or biometrics. Firefox also uses AES-256 encryption and has a "primary password" feature to protect your stored data, without which anyone who has access to your computer or browser profile can view your saved passwords. It's on the user to add these layers of security, as they're not on by default.

As Wired points out, the more serious problem isn't encryption, but rather the risk inherent in storing passwords in a high-value account that could be targeted—either by someone who gains access to your device or as part of a takeover attempt, such as a phishing or credential stuffing attack. This creates a single point of failure, and if someone gets into your Google account or your browser of choice, your passwords for everything else are also compromised.

Browser password managers have only basic features

Browser password managers do basically one thing, which is store your login credentials and fill them in on websites when you visit them in the browser. Google Password Manager will also alert you if your password has been compromised in a breach, but most browsers lack any additional tools and features, such as password customization, secure sharing, email masking, emergency access, and storage for payment cards, identity data, and documents.

Use a dedicated third-party password manager instead

The solution is to opt for a dedicated password manager that works across platforms and devices and offers a layer of protection outside of your browser. There are many excellent password managers to choose from, including free services like Bitwarden and privacy-focused Proton Pass (which also has a decent free tier). The best password managers also have features like secure file storage, encrypted credential sharing, and data breach monitoring, making them useful tools in your privacy and security arsenal.

Of course, even a browser password manager is better than nothing at all, if the alternative is to reuse the same easy-to-remember credentials across your accounts. (It's also likely your reused passwords don't meet basic security standards and can be easily guessed.) Password storage in Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers do reduce the friction of shifting to strong, unique passwords for your accounts, and that alone is a solid step. But a third-party password manager is a superior choice if you're willing to invest a bit of time and energy into setting it up.

Though it was hardly the first show to attempt kitchen-based drama, The Bear’s recipe was pretty unique: With a focus on characters, a willingness to experiment with narrative style, and an intimate knowledge of a world most people don't know much about, it was an ambitious and ultimately successful series.

Carmy, Richie, and Sydney’s stories may have ended with Season 5, but that doesn’t mean you can’t devour more slow-burn kitchen tension set in or around a fine dining establishment. If you’ve watched (and rewatched) The Bear and all the other series that offer similar pleasures, there’s one movie you should check out right away: 2021’s Boiling Point.

Boiling Point also explores a high-pressure kitchen culture

Before Carmy unlocked the doors to Chicago's The Original Beef in the first episode of The Bear, Chef Andy Jones (Stephen Graham) stepped into Jones & Sons in London—and if you loved The Bear best when chaos reigned and the chefs were shouting at each other, strap in for a similar ride. Boiling Point (which was extended into a sequel TV series a few years later) is filmed in one take: a single 90-minute scene of escalating tension, as everything that could possibly go wrong for an alcoholic, emotionally volatile chef and his stressed-out staff does, indeed, go wrong.

Boiling Point is rooted in the same professional kitchen culture as The Bear, and offers a similar dynamic to the early seasons of the show. Andy is a disaster—he secretly drinks on the job, his personal life is a mess, and he’s deeply in debt. The staff at Jones & Sons is top-notch, but they’re all suffering from Andy’s unpredictable moods and their inevitable effects. The restaurant has just been knocked down a health rating, the evening is overbooked, and personalities can’t stop clashing. It all leads to a dynamite climax with real emotional punch.

Another reason fans of The Bear will love Boiling Point is the care the film takes to center food culture. A lot of kitchen dramas treat the cooking and service as set dressing, but this film, like The Bear, knows that what goes into the food and the service is just as important to the story as anything else. Bottom line: You won’t find a closer match to the tone and impact of the celebrated Hulu series in another movie. Bonus: Stephen Graham—now best-known for his incredible performance in Adolescence—is one of the best under-the-radar actors working today, and he brings his A-game to the lead role. It’s the higher-end model of the three on this list, and the one to consider if brightness is a priority. PCMag called the QM8L an “outstanding” TV and gave it its first-ever Lab Award for luminance after measuring it as the brightest sub-100-inch TV the publication had tested. The 2026 QM7L is the more affordable option I’d look at for most people, though. It’s down to $897.99 from $1,499.99, also its lowest price yet, and still gives you a 144Hz mini-LED panel with variable refresh rate for gaming while keeping the price below $1,000. At the bottom of the range is the QM6K at $647.99, down from $799.99. It’s an older model, but still a capable lower-cost mini-LED option. PCMag gave it an “excellent” rating, pointing to its strong contrast, accurate colors, and low input lag for gaming, although it also noted that brightness isn’t one of its many strengths.

The 4K IPS panel gives text, photos, and everyday desktop work noticeably more detail than a similarly sized QHD monitor, which is useful if you spend a lot of time reading, editing, or working across multiple windows. That said, it tops out at 60Hz, so it’s not the one I’d choose for gaming, but for general home or office use, the extra resolution is likely to be more useful than a higher refresh rate.

TikTok will soon support voice comments

Text and photo comments aren't going anywhere, but you may find that the comment section is about to get a bit louder. Starting next month, TikTok will support voice comments up to 60 seconds long, which adds a wholly unique type of comment to the mix. Based on TikTok's press release, you can still attach a text-based comment to your voice comment, similar to how photo comments work.

While friends may post voice comments on each other's videos à la voice memos in a group chat, I'm guessing that commenters in general will use this feature in ways TikTok doesn't necessarily intend. In fact, this may birth a new type of meme, where users spam videos with obnoxious sound effects and reaction sounds. Think the sounds added to meme edits of viral videos, but in comment form. It's going to be messy, and, likely, hysterical.

You can now vote in polls in TikTok comments

Starting this week, you may see a new interactive element to TikTok comments: polls. TikTok says creators can add polls to the comments of their videos, with up to five voting options per poll. Rather than ask for opinions in the comments, creators can use a poll instead. Creators can choose how long voting lasts, and watch votes appear in real time. It's a small change, but one that could be useful to both big and small creators looking for input from their viewers.

You can post Live Photos to comments

You're no longer limited to posting static images in TikTok's comments. TikTok now supports uploading Live Photos to comments, which should also prove interesting. I could see people thinking they're posting a standard image, but accidentally uploading a Live Photo instead. But seeing as users already know how to add GIFs to comments, I'm not sure how many will want to upload Live Photos. This one might be reserved more for friends commenting on friends' videos, but we'll have to see how users react to know for sure.

Post photo carousels as single comments

This last update is perhaps a bit more useful than Live Photo comments. TikTok says it's working on allowing users to upload up to nine photos in one comment, which means the comments section may be literally full of pictures once this launches en masse. Like standard carousels, users will be able to swipe through your photo uploads, including in a full-screen view. This one will roll out over the course of this month.

The C6 delivers the deep blacks and fantastic contrast you’d expect from an OLED, supported by LG’s Alpha 11 AI processor, Dolby Vision, and plenty of gaming features. It supports variable refresh rates up to 165Hz, making it suitable for current consoles and gaming PCs, and one of the best Labor Day TV deals.

The Samsung S90H OLED is also down to $1,597.99, reduced from $2,697.99. That’s a $1,100 discount on the brand’s 2026 model. Its self-lit OLED pixels provide precise contrast, while Samsung’s Glare Free technology makes the S90H more practical in rooms where reflections are a problem. It also features the NQ4 AI Gen 3 processor and gaming support up to 165Hz.

Samsung doesn’t support Dolby Vision, which may matter to those wanting the full home theater experience, but it does have HDR10+ support, reflection handling, and gaming performance that make it a solid alternative to the LG C6.

The 65-inch Hisense CanvasTV is $997.99, down from $1,999.99. That’s a discount of just over $1,000, making it one of the biggest percentage reductions in the roundup.

Designed as a more affordable alternative to Samsung’s Frame, the CanvasTV includes a matte, anti-reflective display, interchangeable frame, slim wall mount, and an art mode for displaying artwork when the TV isn’t in use. It also gives users a 144Hz mode, Google TV, Dolby Vision, and HDMI 2.1 support.

Its picture quality isn’t as impressive as the similarly priced TCL QM7, but the CanvasTV makes more sense if interior design and art presentation are priorities. A great choice for anyone whose priority is daytime viewing.

The Hisense U6 Pro is $649.99, down from $1,099.99. This is my pick for shoppers wanting a large, gaming-friendly Mini-LED TV for less than $650. The 2026 model has a native 144Hz refresh rate, Mini-LED local dimming, quantum-dot color, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, FreeSync Premium Pro, and a glare-resistant screen. It also includes Fire TV rather than Google TV.

It won’t compete with the QM8L’s brightness or an OLED’s black levels, but its feature set is difficult to beat at this price, which is also its lowest ever, according to trackers.

This TCL Mini-LED TV is over $1000 off

The 65-inch TCL QM8L is $1,397.99, down from $2,499.99. The $1,102 discount makes it one of the largest TV price cuts in the Labor Day sales.

This is the premium Mini-LED option for viewers who want high brightness and excellent HDR performance without choosing OLED. It combines TCL’s SQD-Mini-LED technology with more than 4,000 local-dimming zones, a 144Hz refresh rate, Google TV, and Bang & Olufsen audio.

PCMag rated the QM8L “outstanding” and recognized it for achieving exceptional measured brightness. That makes it particularly well-suited to bright living rooms, daytime sports, and vivid HDR content.

The best budget OLED deal is at Best Buy

The 55-inch LG B6E is $799.99 at Best Buy, down from $1,299.99. It’s one of the cheapest current-gen OLED TVs from a reputable brand and a worthy addition to our guide to the best budget OLED TVs.

It includes LG’s Alpha 8 Gen 3 processor, Dolby Vision, webOS 26, and gaming support. Compared to the standard B6, it lacks Precision HDR Master Pro and Precision Sound Master Pro, but the record-low $800 price tag more than makes up for that.

This massive, 75-inch Vizio TV is under $450

The Vizio 75-inch Quantum TV is $428, reduced from $548. Its $120 discount isn’t as big as the premium savings above, but the final price is the real attraction. Few 75-inch quantum-dot TVs from established brands fall below $450. It provides a wide viewing angle, HDR support, Wi-Fi 6, and Vizio’s built-in streaming system.
This isn’t a Mini-LED or high-refresh gaming display, so the Hisense U6 Pro will provide better overall picture quality. The Vizio is the better choice if getting the largest possible screen for under $500 is the priority.

Google now owns the Fitbit brand, and it spent the past few years making questionable choices about its software and mostly neglecting the brand’s iconic hardware. Then, in a stunning turnaround, Google launched the smallest, lightest, and most comfortable fitness tracker I’ve ever used (not counting rings, but we’ll get to those). 

The Fitbit Air tracks your steps, sleep, and workouts without needing much attention from you. Its battery lasts a week, its app reports all the standard information without a subscription, and the price is sensible for such minimalist hardware: $99.99. The only real downside is the overly chatty AI built into the app, which you can disable if it annoys you as much as it did me. 

The Oura Ring 5 is the best fitness tracker to splurge on

If you have $499 to spare (or $399 for some colors), the tracker to get is the Oura Ring 5. Smart rings have always been pretty clunky, but for the fifth generation, Oura managed to get its ring to a size that blends in with jewelry rings. I’ve been wearing Oura rings since the gen 2, and this is the first one that really feels like you can forget you’re wearing a device. 

You pay for the privilege, of course: The purchase price, plus a $5.99/month subscription fee. But Oura’s app is one of the nicest and easiest to use of any smart ring I’ve tried. Besides just giving you daily sleep scores, it breaks down your data to show things like how well you’re recovering despite stress, and how regular your bedtimes are. 

Smart rings aren’t great for detailed workout tracking (or for strength training), but they’re excellent for casually monitoring how much exercise you end up getting throughout your day. For somebody who either doesn’t need workout tracking, or tracks their workouts with another device, an Oura is great for the rest of their day.

The Whoop band is the best fitness tracker for athletes

Some people may want more information than what the Fitbit Air or Oura Ring can give. If they still want to avoid having a screen on their wrist all day, the perfect pick for this person is a Whoop 5.0, specifically with the Peak (middle tier) subscription. 

To explain the pricing: You’ll pay $239 for a Whoop band bundled with your first year’s subscription. After that expires, if you want to keep using it, you need to pay another $239 (or $199, if you want to downgrade your subscription and lose some of the features). That makes it more expensive than my top pick, the Fitbit Air. 

But for an athlete who wants data to pore over, the Whoop seriously delivers. During workouts, you can see your heart rate zones on your phone’s screen, which the Fitbit doesn’t offer. The app can also guide you through weekly plans that are specific to your goals—say, totaling a certain number of minutes of zone 4 and 5 training, while also keeping a consistent bedtime and avoiding screens at night. The app is great at analyzing how the habits you log affect your sleep and recovery, and it’s easy to customize toward the goals you actually care about. I find it easy to balance perfectly so you don’t get information overload. 

The only real downside is that many athletes may want something that gives them pace or heart rate data on their wrist. If your recipient already has a fitness watch, they can use it for workouts while using the Whoop for the rest of the day, and Whoop will seamlessly pull in workout data from the other device. That said, read on if you’re looking for an actual fitness watch with a display.

The Coros Pace 4 is the best basic fitness watch for runners

You probably thought I was going to recommend a Garmin—and I will, below—but first let me tell you why the Coros Pace 4 is a hidden gem, my personal favorite, and my best overall pick for most runners. 

First, the price. It’s $249, which is cheap in the running-watch world. But it punches way above its weight, with dual-band GPS for accurate pace and distance tracking, a heart rate sensor that performed well in my extensive testing, and a fun and useful extra in its voice training logs. 

You’d have to pay twice as much for a Garmin with all of those features—specifically, the Forerunner 570. Buying a nice Coros (or a Suunto, for that matter) feels like you’re getting away with something.

The Garmin Forerunner 970 is the best top-of-the-line fitness tracker for a runner

If there’s a runner in your life you love very much (and want your budget to reflect that), you can’t beat the Forerunner 970. Our resident marathoner Meredith Dietz has an in-depth review here that you might like to check out, but as a spoiler: She loved it. 

The Forerunner 970 packs in all the features a running watch could possibly have. It’s got all the core features of more basic watches like the Coros I mentioned above, plus onboard maps, so you can see where you are in the world by glancing at your wrist. 

The 970 also has a ton of performance metrics and tools to plan your training, plus a feature everyone loves: an LED flashlight that can shine on what’s in front of you without interfering with your view of the watch. While the list is relatively small, these five new features all actually seem pretty useful. In fact, with this update, Google is kind of making the case to avoid buying one of its newest products.

Keeps tabs on your stuff without using a tracker

Google is funny. The company finally rolls out its own competitor to the AirTag, the Pixel Tag, then immediately undercuts it with a new Find Hub feature. "Soon," Google says, you'll have the ability to ask Gemini to remember where you put your stuff, making it possible to keep tabs on those items without needing a dedicated tracker.

Google says the feature is for "things you don't put a tracker tag on," like, perhaps, your passport or a spare key, but there aren't any rules here. You can simply ask Gemini to remember that you put your keys in your bedside drawer, and it'll store that location for you. You can even choose to add a photo if you want the extra assistance. When you can't find something, you can ask Gemini where it is, or check the new "remembered items" tab in Find Hub. Google doesn't have a specific timeline for when this feature will roll out, but it does say that it'll work with Android 16 and newer in countries that support both Gemini and Find Hub.

Android is getting its own anti-motion sickness feature

With iOS 18, Apple introduced "Vehicle Motion Cues," a feature that aims to reduce motion sickness by placing a series of dots on your screen. As the vehicle moves, so do the dots. That way, your brain doesn't get "confused" by looking at a stationary screen in a moving vehicle; it thinks the screen is moving as well, hopefully keeping your senses in equilibrium.

While developers brought this concept to Android devices through third-party apps, Google now has a version of the feature of its own. Google's take is called "Motion Assist," and it works just about the same way as Apple's. Like Vehicle Motion Cues, you can customize how these dots actually look; in this case, you can control their shape, color, and opacity. You can choose to have the feature kick on automatically, or pin it as a Quick Setting tile to access it whenever you want. Google says this feature is coming to all phones running Android 17.

"Guided vision" is coming to Gemini Live

Just about every tech company with an AI platform offers a "Live" feature, which lets the AI "see" through your device's camera to help answer questions about your surroundings. For Google, that's Gemini Live.

Now, Google is adding "Guided vision" to Gemini Live, a feature designed for blind and low-vision users. Guided vision uses Gemini Live to help you navigate your surroundings in a more accessible way: Rather than simply answering questions about "what type of plant is this" or "when was this building built," Google says Guided vision can help with reading fine print on a nutrition label, or discerning the different dishes on a menu in a restaurant with low light. Furthermore, Guided vision can help you line up your camera if you aren't pointing it in the right spot. This feature is actually coming to a larger number of devices than some other features, as Google says you'll be able to use it with Android 9 and newer devices where Gemini is available.

Google Messages now has collaborative Google Keep integration

If you have a friend or a group chat that frequently collaborates on lists (think grocery lists or vacation planning), Google Messages is getting a helpful upgrade. Following this Pixel Drop, Google Messages users will notice a new Google Keep icon in the (+) menu. Once activated, you'll be able to create and edit new notes directly in your chats. Rather than jumping between Google Keep and Google Messages, you can chat and collaborate in one app. As someone on the iOS side of things, I hope Apple—ahem—takes notes here.

Google Messages gets new chat customizations

Google Messages is also getting some new chat customization options. Now, you can change the background of a chat to whatever you want, including photos from your library. When you do, the text bubbles automatically change to match that image's color scheme. That said, you can adjust the colors to whatever you like, or customize the bubbles without changing the background.

ExpressVPN is offering 80% off during its Labor Day sale

If you subscribe to a two-year plan with ExpressVPN right now, you’ll pay just $83.72 for the first two years and even get another four months extra on the Basic plan. You’ll pay slightly more during renewal at $99.95 a month for the next two years, still lower than their usual monthly subscription at $14.99/month. 

That said, you don’t need to commit to a long-term subscription right away if you don’t want to. ExpressVPN is also offering 66% off on its annual subscription, with an additional three months extra. Discounts also apply to all other ExpressVPN plans, including the Advanced plan and Express Pro. 

I’ve tested a lot of VPNs throughout my career, and ExpressVPN is my personal preference for bypassing streaming site restrictions when traveling. It’s consistent in its ability to avoid detection by maintaining a lot of server locations in different parts of the world. VPN bypassing is legal in most North American and European nations, but you may want to consult local laws if you’re in a region known for state censorship. 

You can get 87% off on Surfshark One during its Labor Day sale

Surfshark generally offers some of the best VPN deals in the industry, so it’s unsurprising to see them offer a $67.23 deal on the first 27 months of Surfshark Starter. That said, I’d actually recommend going one tier up for Surfshark One, which is also offering a 27-month subscription for the exact same price of $67.23. 

It doesn’t cost you anything extra to go for the middle tier, but the catch is that their renewal prices are much higher at $284.25 a year for Surfshark One. In this case, I’d actually recommend getting the 27-month deal on Surfshark One—but disable auto-renewal so you can wait for another promotion or switch providers at renewal. 

Surfshark’s biggest differentiator is that your subscription is good for unlimited devices with no restrictions on concurrent usage. You also get premium features like split tunneling, rotating IPs, and VPN MultiHop without paying anything extra. Surfshark One even lets you generate alternate IDs with masked emails for identity theft protection. 

You can get NordVPN Complete for $4.39 per month during its Labor Day sale

NordVPN has three tiers: Basic, Complete, and Complete Max. Right now, all NordVPN plans are discounted across the board at 69-75% off their usual 2-year price. NordVPN Complete, which sits right in the middle, gets the most value among the three with 75% off for two years at $118.53, plus an additional three months extra. 

NordVPN also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, but you’re unlikely to need it since their service is considered industry-leading. Along with multiple VPN servers across the world, you also get antimalware protection for your browser, SSN monitoring, and 1 TB of free cloud storage on the Complete plan. 

Like ExpressVPN, Nord is known for high speeds and strong privacy protection that evades most VPN detectors that online platforms use. Another great feature is Nord’s Dark Web Monitoring tool, which is included with all plans and lets you monitor up to five emails for dark web leaks. 

IPVanish has a two-year subscription for less than $60 during its Labor Day sale

IPVanish keeps things simple with only two subscription tiers, both of which come with zero restrictions on the number of connections or devices. There’s Essential, which has all your standard VPN features with 3GB of eSIM data, available at $59.76 for the first two-year period. Then there’s the Advanced tier, which throws in 5GB of eSIM data, a secure browser, and 1TB of cloud backups at $86.16 for the first two years. 

Like with Surfshark, IPVanish places no restrictions on the number of devices or concurrent connections you can have, making it a good buy for individuals and businesses. Unlike Surfshark, IPVanish does not raise prices as sharply on renewal. They also have native support for a wide range of devices and operating systems, including Android, iOS, ChromeOS, visionOS, AppleTV, Fire TV, and Linux. You can even buy an IPVanish-enabled router from the store to have VPN features configured at the router level. 

Personally, I like IPVanish for the value it offers, even if it isn’t as polished an experience as ExpressVPN on Nord products. As someone who needs to flick between their Android phone, iPad, Macbook, and Windows desktop constantly during work, it also helps to have router-level configuration options to avoid dropping the VPN every time I switch devices. 

Norton VPN Standard is 50% off for the first year during its Labor Day sale

Compared to other VPNs on this list, and especially the aggressive offers from Surfshark or Nord VPN, Norton’s promotional offer feels pretty conservative. You can get 50-54% off on VPN plans depending on the tier you choose, with support for no more than ten devices per subscription. 

Norton also includes things like kill switch protection, rotating IPs, ad blocking, and 10-50 GB cloud backup space depending on your plan. I’d say that Norton VPN Plus offers the most value of the three tiers, with 10 GB of cloud storage and AI-powered scam protection added to your VPN plan at $49.99 for the first year. At renewal, your price goes up to $109.99, which is comparable to a provider like IPVanish. 

Norton has a strong reputation in the cybersecurity world thanks to its antivirus tools, but as a VPN, it doesn’t benefit from the same popularity. But I’d consider it an easy upgrade if I were already using Norton products, which is probably why Norton 360 Deluxe has the same first-year offer price as the VPN but also includes antivirus, malware, and ransomware protection. Even at renewal, the Deluxe plan only sets you back $124.99 a year, which is a much better deal considering the value.

He learns that he hasn't entirely lost his mind when he's contacted by Archie (Anjli Mohindra), an agent of the title's Lazarus Project, who shares the truth: Time did reset, and the shadowy group was responsible. In extreme circumstances, and following a catastrophe, they'll wind back the clock (always to July 1) to get more time to fix the problem. A simple-seeming, if disturbing, case of missing children in a German town quickly grows into a conspiracy involving four families over multiple generations. The Man in the High Castle (2015 – 2019)

The title’s "man in the high castle" offers up a propaganda film (or is it?) that presents an alternate view that looks more like the one in our history books. If the theme here is shows with big concepts that still feel grounded and personal, Sense8 fits the bill perfectly. Here, eight strangers from around the world (including Jamie Clayton, Bae Doona, and Tuppence Middleton, with Daryl Hannah, Naveen Andrews, and Freema Agyeman) awaken to discover they have a deep, inexplicable connection. On one level, it means they can share their special abilities when needed. On another, it’s an uplifting call for connection, a recognition of our mutual interconnectedness, and a celebration of difference. Sliders (1995 – 2000)

The tone here is quite different, but it would be an unforgivable slight to leave out the show that was doing the multiverse way before it was cool. There's an appealing goofiness to this quintessentially '90s bit of sci-fi, with Jerry O'Connell as Quinn Mallory, who accidentally opens a portal that sends him and a rotating group of companions (including, initially, Jonathan Rhys-Davies) through the multiverse. The device that he invents to get them all home is, inconveniently, an unreliable timer that keeps them stuck wherever they land for...well, however much time the story demands. Over the course of their adventures, they visit worlds where the Soviet Union won the Cold War, where antibiotics were never invented, and where Hillary Clinton is president (I swear!). Increasing serialization involving a whole species of mostly evil Sliders doesn't really improve things as the show goes on, but it's still a pretty good time. Stream Sliders on Peacock and Tubi.

Though rather different in story and execution, I'm here for the creepy high-concept sci-fi as well as the Blake Crouch of it all, as this one is based on a trilogy of novels from the writer of Dark Matter. Matt Dillon plays a Secret Service agent investigating the disappearances of two fellow agents in the Idaho town of Wayward Pines. Things go awry pretty much immediately, and he wakes up from a car accident to find one of the agents (Carla Gugino), who's also his ex, having settled down in the seemingly idyllic community—and 12 years older than when he last saw her a few weeks earlier. Even more dramatically, the local sheriff (Terrence Howard) enforces a strict "no one ever leaves" policy, on pain of death. The mysteries pile up from there. Stream Wayward Pines on Hulu.

Nintendo’s price increase officially took effect today, Sept. 1, raising the Switch 2’s U.S. MSRP from $449.99 to $499.99. That means Woot’s refurbished console is now approximately 20% cheaper than buying a new one at its revised price, and even $50 below its former price. If you’ve been waiting for one of the better Labor Day gaming deals, this may be among your last opportunities to get the console for less than $400. The promotion is currently scheduled to end at 11:59 p.m. CT on Sept. 25, but Woot’s inventory is limited, so this offer may disappear sooner if it sells out. Purchases are limited to one console per customer.

The biggest consideration is that this isn’t a new or Nintendo-certified refurbished unit. According to Woot, its Grade A designation means the console has been inspected, passed a complete diagnostic test, and is guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage with like-new functionality. According to Google, reasoning and coding are better than ever with Gemini 3.8 Flash, and there are "significant" improvements across "software engineering, agentic tasks, and critical, multi-step reasoning in specialized domains"—so this is very much an update for advanced AI, rather than your basic prompting. You'll find Gemini 3.8 Flash available now inside the Gemini app if you use either the AI Pro plan ($19.99 a month) or the AI Ultra plan ($99.99 or $199.99 a month). There's nothing yet for users on the free tier or the $7.99-per-month AI Plus plan, though these models do trickle down to lower tiers over time, as upgrades are released.

Gemini Flash is new and improved

You'd be forgiven for being more than a little confused by all the Gemini AI models Google has pushed out in recent months. For some time now, the models have been split into Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro, and as you go up that scale, the AI gets slower, more capable at deeper reasoning and complex queries, and more expensive. (Not to mention, these models have different thinking levels too).

With the Pro category, we're still on Gemini 3.1 Pro that launched in February 2026. While a follow-up was mentioned at Google I/O in May, it's yet to be made public. The Flash channel is moving along much more quickly, and it was only a few months ago in December that the first Gemini Flash 3.0 was previewed.

Now we have Gemini 3.8 Flash. As per Google's benchmarks (which you should always take with a pinch of salt), it offers improvements over its predecessor when tackling "long-horizon software engineering" (so full projects rather than small tools), knowledge work (synthesizing and digging into information), complex legal workflows, financial analysis, and agentic activities. Gemini 3.8 Flash is particularly good at complex engineering problems, Google says, and has improved in multi-step reasoning across science, math, humanities, and professional fields. It'll go into more depth to figure answers out, run more checks on their accuracy, and work better at combining different skills in one response.

There are safety measures in place too: The AI has guardrails to block misuse concerning chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cyber offense lines of questioning, and is better than ever at resisting prompt injection attacks (where prompts are engineered to try and get the AI to do something malicious). It all looks impressive on the surface, as do the demos Google showcases here: One of them is a fully working version of Google Maps inside an MS-DOS interface, which will particularly appeal if (like me) you started using computers back in the days of the command prompt.

Testing Gemini 3.8 Flash against Gemini 3.6 Flash

While I don't have any long-horizon software projects on the go at the moment, I did put the new Gemini 3.8 Flash up against the Gemini 3.6 Flash model that's available to free users in a variety of tasks: designing an interactive Solar System animation, summarizing and simplifying a dense scientific paper, and analyzing the last week of emails in my Gmail account (one of the toughest engineering challenges I know).

To begin with, Gemini 3.8 Flash was noticeably faster: 23 seconds versus 27 seconds for building a space simulation, 15 seconds versus 20 seconds for the science summary, and more or less equal on the emails. Add up those percentages over huge projects and multiple tasks, and you can see that the new model really does get stuff done faster.

For the Solar System test, the simulations were pretty similar—perhaps a sign of how fast they've progressed that a task like this is straightforward for them now. Gemini 3.8 Flash did do a slightly better job at the quality of the renderings though, as the planets look noticeably more "real." When it came to the science summary, again both AI models tackled a tricky problem well. If anything, Gemini 3.6 Flash presented a more understandable summary—perhaps as it's a simpler model—but I found the visualizations and diagrams presented by Gemini 3.8 Flash more helpful (remember the images are created by Nano Banana 2 in both cases, but the info is provided by the underlying model).

On the email challenge, there wasn't much to choose between them: Both accurately summarized what was in my inbox and picked out the same items that needed attention (emails that weren't that important as it happens, but that's a whole other story). This is still a job I prefer to do myself, but these AI models are getting more reliable.

The speed and sophistication gains that Google has talked about are clearly there, even in small-scale tests like this—and it's notable that creating mini web apps and digging through complex physics papers are now straightforward for Flash models as well as the Pro equivalents, which is maybe something to think about if you're considering signing up for a Google AI plan. (Of course, if you want to upgrade to Gemini 3.8 Flash, you'll need to pay.)

ChatGPT appears to be experiencing the most issues, at least per Downdetector. The site, which accepts user reports of issues with apps and services, currently shows tens of thousands of reports for ChatGPT alone. Claude and Grok had fewer reports, but still many (thousands) over the course of this morning.

According to OpenAI's status page, the company had experienced issues with both ChatGPT and Codex. Anthropic had also acknowledged issues with Claude, including for its Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1, and Opus 5 models, and said it is working on a fix. SpaceXAI shows that all Grok functions appear to be down at this time. As of 1:19 p.m. ET, all three services now report that they're now up and running.

It's not clear exactly what caused these issues, or if they were all related to one another. Typically, outages like these are solved relatively quickly, so it's not a surprise that all three were able to get their systems back by early afternoon. I'll continue to monitor the situation and update this piece accordingly.

The B6 is LG’s entry-level OLED for 2026, but “entry-level” doesn’t mean basic. The TV has a 4K, self-lit OLED panel for the deep blacks and strong contrast that make it a compelling choice for movie nights. It also supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Filmmaker Mode, and LG’s webOS platform. Compared to its predecessor, the B5, the B6 is brighter, giving viewers stronger contrast and crisper textures.

Its color performance and gaming credentials are also particularly strong for the price thanks to four HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K gaming at up to 120Hz, VRR, Nvidia G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium, and a Game Optimizer mode. That makes it a good pick for anyone with a PS5, Xbox Series X, or gaming PC rather than just a streaming-TV upgrade.

There are trade-offs. The B6 is not as bright as LG’s pricier C6 OLED, so it is best suited to a room where you can control glare and ambient light. Its built-in speakers are also just mediocre; if you want a truly cinematic experience, you may want to pair it with an external soundbar. Still, reviewers found its color, contrast, responsiveness, and overall feature set hard to beat at the right price, making the LG 65-inch B6 OLED TV one of the best 2026 Amazon Labor Day deals.

The S25 line offers upgrades from the S24 lineup: The best features in the OS are shared by all Galaxy phones, giving you features you can only get from One UI 7, including exclusive media and notifications features. I have been a loyal customer of the 1000X line for many years; they're my go-to headphones for most activities. The WH-1000XM5 received an "outstanding" review from PCMag for their top-notch audio quality and exceptional audio when using the best-in-class active noise cancellation.
