How to use G'MIC filters on video

I spent some time trying to figure out how to apply G’MIC filters to videos. I am fairly sure G’MIC has an option to do this directly but could not find it and decided to make a bash script anyway, as a learning exercise. This cobble-slop comes from a hundred scripts around the globe.

I thought my play on words was a little over clever but I was also dealing with some medical issues that required drugs I didn’t want to take. So I decided to not take them and instead change my habits instead. Was it a delusion? Could I really make the necessary changes? So the name stuck.

So this is one of the best things I’ve ever made and likely because it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever made. In coming up with an inspiration for compilation 3 of Bonk Wave I struck on the idea of using elements from 4 other artists who release Creative Commons material, and who I have, individually, reworked before – but this time all in one track. Read the liner notes for more details. But let’s say this had a REAL ugly stage before it finally relented, gave in, and became, in my own opinion, beautiful to listen to.

These tracks arose out of nowhere, unasked. I was trying a few new techniques and was happy with the results. On and Off the Rails is just commentary on how the track itself evolves and the video for it follows suit. Hex Induction is something percolating and bouncy. Fear of Public Transportation is a phrase that captures a feeling here in the US at the time. Stupid car culture. Stupid everything.

I made this free Roku app for The Indie Beat Radio (find them online at https://theindiebeat.fm) because I wanted to be able to listen to the radio station and watch the live stream video on my TV in the living room which is hooked up to my stereo system. I don’t have a great sound system but it is far better than the tinny little Bluetooth speaker on my PC. For better or for worse (mostly worse) Roku is the set top streaming device(s) that I own, so I learned how to do it.^^1^^

I love ephemera and retro television and movies. Ages ago, I noticed RetroStrange on Roku but somehow their app died, likely because Roku’s app policy changes often. When I joined Mastodon, I found them again and through the magic of “people on the fediverse being actually approachable” I reached out and asked if they wanted a new app and they said yes! So RetroStrange is back on Roku.
