 An honest comparison
## Real devices vs emulators: when each one is the right call

Real device testing is not automatically the correct answer. Emulators and simulators are faster to start, cheaper to run in bulk and perfectly adequate for a large share of everyday checks. We sell both, so here is the split we would actually recommend.

### An emulator or simulator is enough for

- 1 Layout, navigation and functional regression on every commit, where you care that the flow works rather than how the hardware behaves.
- 2 Broad OS-version sweeps, because spinning up twenty emulator images costs a fraction of occupying twenty physical handsets.
- 3 Early development feedback, where a session that starts in seconds matters more than hardware fidelity.
- 4 Screen-size and resolution checks, which an emulator reproduces faithfully.

### You need real hardware for

- 1 Performance and responsiveness, because an emulator borrows your host machine's CPU and memory and will happily hide a device that is too slow.
- 2 Camera, GPS, biometrics, Bluetooth and other sensors, which emulators either stub out or approximate.
- 3 Real network behaviour on a real radio, including how the app copes with a genuinely poor mobile connection.
- 4 Vendor-specific behaviour, where the manufacturer's own build of Android is what breaks rather than Android itself.

Most teams end up running both: [emulators and simulators](https://testingbot.com/features/manual-mobile-testing) on every commit, and real hardware before a release, on the handsets their own analytics say matter most.

 What you need to buy
## Which plans include real devices

Real devices are not a premium tier here. Every TestingBot subscription includes them, and there is one honest exception you should know about before you buy.

### Manual plan

Live, hands-on sessions on real iPhones, iPads and Android handsets, driven from your browser. Includes the hosted emulators and simulators too.

### Automated plan

Appium, XCUITest, Espresso and Maestro runs on real devices, plus the full desktop browser grid. Codeless AI, visual testing and accessibility scans are included rather than sold separately.

### Pro plan

Everything in Manual and Automated on a single subscription, for teams doing both against the same device fleet.

### Pay-as-you-go credits

Credits cover automated runs on desktop browsers and on emulators and simulators only. They do not include real devices, and they do not include live manual sessions.

Current tiers and parallel-session counts are on the [pricing page](https://testingbot.com/pricing). Every plan starts with a free trial, and no card is needed to look around.

FAQ
## Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about real device testing on TestingBot.

What is real device testing?

Real device testing is the practice of running automated or manual tests on physical smartphones and tablets, as opposed to emulators or simulators. It surfaces hardware-specific issues like CPU/RAM constraints, battery behaviour, real network conditions and device-specific rendering quirks that emulators or simulators cannot reproduce.

Should I use a real device or an emulator?

Use emulators for fast feedback during early development and unit-style flows. Use real devices for release validation, performance testing, biometric flows, camera/sensor logic, push notifications and final acceptance testing. Most teams run both: emulators in CI on every commit, real devices on the release branch.

Where are TestingBot's real devices located?

All TestingBot devices are hosted in a secure datacenter in Belgium, Europe. Every device is wiped and re-imaged after each test session. None are jailbroken or rooted.

Which test frameworks does the real device cloud support?

Appium (iOS and Android), XCUITest (iOS), Espresso (Android), Maestro (iOS and Android), Mobilewright (iOS and Android) and any WebDriver-compatible framework. You can also drive devices manually from your browser, or use TestingBot's codeless AI test creator to generate tests from plain English.

Can I test apps that are not yet on the App Store or Google Play?

Yes. Upload an .ipa or .apk build to TestingBot Storage and install it on any real device. You can also test apps already published to the App Store or Google Play, or connect to staging environments behind a corporate firewall using TestingBot Tunnel.

What's the difference between the public and private device cloud?

Public-cloud devices are shared across customers and are wiped between sessions. Private-cloud devices are dedicated phones we purchase, configure and host exclusively for your account, with optional persistence between tests, custom profiles and pre-installed apps.

How does TestingBot compare to BrowserStack and SauceLabs for real device testing?

TestingBot offers European-hosted real devices (BrowserStack and SauceLabs are primarily US-hosted), GDPR and CSA STAR compliance, transparent flat-rate pricing, free for open source, and identical Appium/XCUITest/Espresso APIs. Customers usually migrate for the EU data residency, faster device allocation and direct support from the engineering team.
