Congratulations to Devina Sarwatay, who is starting a new role as Lecturer in Digital Sociology at City St George’s, University of London. From a fully funded PhD in India to a Presidential Fellowship and now a lectureship in the UK, Devina has built an academic career spanning research, teaching, leadership, and international academic networks. She also serves on the editorial board of Media, Culture & Society and as Vice-Chair of Media Education Research at IAMCR. If you work in media, communication, or digital culture, chances are you've come across her work. The Academic Commons spoke to her about what happens between those milestones. In this conversation, Devina talks openly about choosing the right opportunities after a PhD, why not all postdocs are the same, building academic networks, moving across higher education systems, and developing the experience needed to progress in academia. We also touched on something that doesn't always get enough attention: the tacit knowledge that helps people actually navigate academia. The module uses a visual “AI Factory” metaphor to help students see that ChatGPT is not a neutral answer machine: its responses are shaped by pattern prediction, human preference tuning, helpfulness pressure, safety rules, and style polishing. The session will invite discussion about how this metaphor might support media literacy teaching, especially around AI, attention, persuasion, learning, and the hidden systems that shape online discourse.
