Sam Ly

Hi! Welcome to my site!

I am Sam Ly Image This is me! No, I am not from New York, though it is a beautiful city..

I am a Computer Science student taking a minor in data science and a minor in mathematics (potentially a double major if time allows). I am interested in all things programming and math! Most of all, I am a continual learner and creator. I will never turn down an opportunity to learn something new, solve an interesting problem, or make something cool.

My philosophy on learning is this: learn just enough to build fast. That is, I take my time learn something deeply (but not too much!), then iterate fast on janky prototypes until it clicks. This is where I either go back to the books, or continue jank-ing away until I have something polished. Books lay the foundation for true understanding, but can only take you so far. The only way to truly understand is to create, and all creation requires iteration.

There is almost a phase transition when concepts become creations. These abstract things swirling in my head like suddenly become real, tangible. Something that I can measure with benchmarks, see with my own eyes, or feel the weight of in my hand.

Whether it be a difficult math proof, programming problem, or a paragraph I've been struggling to word, the moment when things finally click is a feeling I am always chasing.

Currently, I am a research assistant working under Dr. Hao Ji in the Computational Intelligence lab. We tackle the problem of applying machine learning to create efficient sparse linear solvers.

P.S. Check out my blogs!
