Inspiration
We all have stuff we reuse: a canned email reply, a client's onboarding PDF, the confirmation code from a booking screenshot, the address we type into forms again and again. Saving it is easy. Getting it back later is not. It ends up spread across Notes, Files, Photos, email drafts and bookmarks, and the camera roll is where screenshots go to be forgotten.
The Shipaton brief asked for a beautifully designed home for reusable snippets, images, files and documents: more focused than a notes app, and far simpler than a file manager. We noticed that every existing tool makes you decide where something goes before you know how you'll use it. We wanted to flip that around.
What it does
PluckIt is the fastest place to save anything you'll need again, and to get it back in seconds.
- Capture with no ceremony. Share from any app, paste, drop a file, or take a photo. PluckIt confirms the save immediately, even offline.
- AI that reads what you saved. In the background, PluckIt pulls the text out of images, PDFs, Office documents and voice notes. It writes a useful title and summary, and pulls out the details worth reusing: amounts, dates, emails, phone numbers, codes, tracking numbers, places, people and organizations.
- Facts you can use straight away. Those details show up on the item as separate fields you can copy, so the booking reference inside a screenshot is one tap away. You don't have to retype it.
- An intelligent Home. Instead of a flat list of recent items, Home brings up what's relevant now, like an upcoming date or something you reuse often. Every suggestion has a "Why am I seeing this?" explanation, and you can correct it.
- Find it however you remember it. Search by exact words (including text found inside images) or by meaning, then copy, share or open in one tap.
- Stacks, without the filing. Group items into Stacks when you want to. The Inbox and the AI's suggestions mean you never have to.
- Private by design. Voice notes are transcribed on the device. Location data is stripped from images. AI processing requires your consent, and the server enforces it.
How we built it
- Mobile: Expo React Native for iOS and Android, plus a native Swift Share Extension, so saving from any app takes one tap.
- Desktop: a Mac companion built with Tauri 2, sharing the same design system.
- Backend: Cloudflare
- Data: Supabase Postgres and Auth.
- AI: a provider-agnostic layer for robust ai inclusion.
- Sync: an offline-first local store with an outbox. Your unsent edits win, and conflicts are kept, never silently dropped.
- Monetization: RevenueCat for subscriptions, with value before the paywall.
- Design: our own "Concrete & Glass" design language, built in Figma.
Challenges we ran into
- iPhone photos broke everything. Our HEIC support passed every test and then failed in production. A real iPhone photo is a tiled grid with an HDR gain map and depth layers, and the standard libraries refused to open it. The test images we had generated contained none of that. We ended up building libheif from source inside our parser container, and from then on we tested against a real photo.
- Sharing a PDF failed in four separate places. iOS didn't offer PluckIt for documents, the extension couldn't load them, the app dropped the staged file, and the upload rejected it. We could only find each failure after fixing the one before it.
- Expiring links vs. caching. Images are served through 60-second signed URLs, which defeated every cache keyed on the URL. We switched to keying the cache on the object itself.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Saving is immediate and never lost, even with no connection.
- The AI pulls out reusable facts nobody asked it to find, and every one can be copied with a tap.
- A Home screen that explains its own suggestions, instead of a black box.
- Voice transcription runs on the device, so recordings don't have to leave your phone.
- A complete, original design system shared by mobile and desktop.
- A store-ready build: a privacy manifest, accessibility work, and an automated check that holds the App Store's own copy to the same rules as the app.
What we learned
- Test with real data. Generated test files gave us confidence we hadn't earned.
- A check that can't fail isn't a check. Several of our safeguards passed without testing anything until we tried to break what they protect.
- Quiet AI beats chatty AI. People want the booking code ready to copy, not a conversation about their screenshot.
What's next for PluckIt
- Richer Home surfaces: trips, receipts, threads and checklists put together automatically from what you've saved.
- Parakeet, an optional on-device transcriber that brings voice notes to iPhones that predate iOS 26.
- Reaching parity with the Mac companion, plus Android share-target polish.
- Optional, consented context like weather, package tracking and price changes for the items that need it.
