Inspiration

Mobile racing games often fall into two extremes: overly bloated titles packed with aggressive paywalls and long load screens, or simplified 2D tap-runners that lack genuine physical feedback. We set out to recapture the pure thrill of classic arcade racing—tight cornering, nitro-fueled boosts, and reactive track hazards—in a clean, native iOS experience that runs at a locked 60+ FPS while delivering a rewarding, skill-based progression system.

What it does

Velocity Unleashed is a fast-paced 3D arcade racing game built natively for iOS. Players blast through obstacle-laden tracks, drift around hairpin turns, and manage high-speed nitro boosts to beat the clock and dominate the leaderboards.

  • Dynamic Arcade Handling: Responsive touch and tilt controls featuring custom lateral drift mechanics, boost acceleration, jump ramps, and real-time collision dynamics.
  • Intricate Circuits & Hazards: Richly decorated low-poly tracks featuring responsive obstacles, destructible roadside props, interactive ramps, and split pathways.
  • Garage & Customization Hub: Tiered vehicle unlocks, visual skin palettes, and performance tuning for top speed, acceleration, and handling.
  • Seamless Monetization: Powered by RevenueCat, enabling instantaneous in-app purchases for vehicle packs, premium cosmetic liveries, and VIP track access without intrusive ad interruptions.

How we built it

  • Engine & Rendering: Developed entirely in Swift using SceneKit and Metal shaders for real-time 3D rendering, particle systems (exhaust flames, tire smoke, spark effects), and dynamic scene lighting.
  • Asset Pipeline: Low-poly 3D vehicles and environmental props modeled and optimized in Blender, converted into .usdz and native .scn scene graphs with tuned Levels of Detail (LODs) and geometry instancing to minimize draw calls.
  • Physics & Vehicle Controller: Custom raycast suspension logic combined with parameterized friction curves for drifting, integrated with iOS UIFeedbackGenerator for tactile haptic feedback on impacts and drift breaks.
  • Monetization & Entitlements: Integrated the RevenueCat iOS SDK to handle StoreKit transactions, manage entitlement states, serve dynamic paywalls, and validate receipts effortlessly.

Challenges we ran into

  • Maintaining a Stable 60 FPS on Mobile: Balancing dynamic real-time lighting, vehicle physics, shadow maps, and particle effects required rigorous profiling in Xcode Instruments, aggressive polygon reduction, and texture atlas consolidation.
  • Nailing the Drift Feel: Finding the sweet spot between accessible touch controls and rewarding mechanical depth required dozens of physics iterations across angular damping, grip thresholds, and counter-steer recovery.
  • Zero-Latency Entitlement Syncing: Designing the game architecture so that purchasing an item via RevenueCat instantly unlocked and configured 3D models in the garage without hitching the main render thread.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Buttery Smooth Native Performance: Achieved an uncompromised 60+ FPS frame rate across modern iPhones and iPads with minimal thermal impact and fast load times.
  • High-Impact Game Feel: Combined dynamic camera field-of-view scaling during boost phases, subtle camera shake, directional audio, and synchronized haptics to deliver an authentic sense of speed.
  • Frictionless Store Experience: Delivered a clean, transparent purchasing flow powered by RevenueCat that lets players unlock content in seconds and restore purchases seamlessly.

What we learned

  • The Power of Native iOS 3D: Gained deep insight into optimizing native SceneKit and Metal rendering pipelines for high-performance arcade mechanics without relying on bulky third-party engines.
  • Monetization Architecture with RevenueCat: Learned how much time and boilerplate RevenueCat saves compared to maintaining manual StoreKit receipt validation and state management.
  • Readability at High Velocity: Discovered that trackside prop placement, distinct lighting silhouettes, and high-contrast hazards are critical when players are moving at 200+ scale MPH.

What's next for Velocity Unleashed

  • In-Game Track Editor: A modular level-creation tool allowing players to snap together tracks, place props, and share custom circuits.
  • Ghost Racing & Cloud Leaderboards: Compete against friend ghosts and global records via Apple Game Center integration.
  • Expanded Vehicle Classes: Introducing heavy muscle cars, high-downforce prototypes, and off-road trucks with unique handling profiles.
  • LiveOps & Seasonal Events: Leveraging RevenueCat remote offerings to deploy limited-time weekend challenges, special event passes, and seasonal vehicle drops.
