Hi, I’m Phil Nelson, a writer, developer, and audio-visual maker of stuff. I have been making stuff online for over 25 years. I run RetroStrange and Set Side B. Good to see you.
We now have an official page here for the album of weird drum and synth noises I made in the early 2020s, hosted here on exfu for your indieweb listening pleasure. I’ve also added MP3 downloads of the tracks for free.
Spent this lazy Saturday morning working on the EXFU002 web server, which hosts this very website. People ask me sometimes for advice on setting up servers, and aside from the standard security stuff (SSH on nonstandard port, fail2ban, no root login, key-based logins only…) I’ll be adding the info from guide from DigitalOcean. The guide is great at explaining some stuff about swap files, swappiness, and cache pressure that I did not know despite my decades of experience here. Mabye you’ll learn something, too.
Well, we are for better or worse now away from Substack. Last week’s newsletter was the first send with the new system and it went pretty badly! Turns out only about 30% of subscribers got that message. I went and signed up at SMTP2Go for a free plan (1k sends per month, more than enough for us) and modified some DNS records at Linode and hopefully this send actually reaches the intended destinations. So it goes. Please whitelist newsletter@extrafuture.com in your email clients.
This edition should also LOOK much better than the previous one, as I have spent some hours with the block editor and WordPress site editor this week to spiff-up my website at extrafuture.com. Lemme know if you get this, how it looks, and what you think in the comments.
The RetroStrange GIF Library
One of the things that Patrons support is the RetroStrange GIF Library. It’s a repository of 10 animated GIFs from each item in the RetroStrange TV catalog. That’s a ton of GIFs! No watermarks, use ’em for whatever you want. The GIF embedded here is from A Revolutionary Triumph in Tape (1958).
The code I use to generate the GIFs is open source on my GitHub. We like to give back, here at Phil’s Newsletter.
Won’t You Be My Patron?
Yes, I still have a Patreon. We’ve lost about 30% of our paying patrons over the last year or so. Currently we’re pulling down $58/mo, which pays for the hosting for RetroStrange and my other project Set Side B, an indie games blog. I’m still subsidizing the cost of RetroStrange TV out of my own pocket, so if you like that thing, please join for $1 per month so we can keep paying for it.
I feel like the Patreon drop has gone along with me not posting as much there, and not posting much in general. I’m starting to fix that by syndicating my newsletter over there starting with this one. Hello, Patrons.
This Week on OpenCV Live: Robot Race Cars
At my day job our guest on OpenCV Live episode 160 is Matt Flagg, a part of the world’s first professional autonomous motorsports team. That’s a fancy way of saying that they make and race robot cars which is pretty awesome. We stream at 9am Pacific time tomorrow.
This Is the Age of the Coward. Disney, Target, and other mega-corps who were JUST recently pretending to be woke crumpled like wet paper for Trump’s horseshit.
Well, we did it, folks. If I haven’t messed anything up too badly you are reading this via email or my blog at extrafuture.com and we are done with Substack. The reasons I’m leaving Substack for greener pastures are many, but the big one is easy: I don’t tolerate bigots and I especially don’t tolerate Nazis, and Substack will happily give that hate a platform. So we’re taking our ball and going home, to the indieweb, and hosting this newsletter via the WordPress Newsletter plugin. We’re now running this on, mostly, open source software from top to bottom, and I like that. Hope you do, too.
So far, the main beef I have is with the poor quality of templates. What is available is kind of ugly and hard to read. I am working on fixing that for you. Bear with me. Thanks.
The Weather Report & Stamping The Date
I’ve started doing a couple new video projects every weekday on my YouTube channel. After the passing of David Lynch, I started thinking a lot about how I missed his Weather Report videos, and so I decided to fill that gap myself. The first several are way more Lynch-impression-heavy but I think I’m finding my own way to do it. Here’s today’s Weather Report video.
I’ve also added a second video, called Stamp The Date, where I take an old date stamp, adjust to today’s date, and stamp it on a sheet of white card stock in one take, no redos. So far it’s the most popular thing on my YouTube channel. Here is today’s date stamp. What will tomorrow look like?
The Good Links provide. Formatting these in the Newsletter plugin editor fucking SUUUUUCKS.
WikiTok takes all of the endorphin-flooding functionality of TikTok and replaces the silly dances with random Wikipedia pages
Tim O’Reilly has a lot to say about Large Language Models and how they’re changing the job of being a programmer. “The End of Programming as We Know It“
I turned 42-years-old last Saturday. The answer to live, the universe, and everything is now mine. Turns out it really is as simple as ”be kind.”
I ain’t too proud to post my Amazon wishlist and hope a couple of you are feeling generous. We’re skint here are the Wizard Tower lately.
Weird Al has the best birthday song, and it’s not even close. The lyrics are upsettingly relevant again despite it being damn near as old as I am. What are your faves? Difficulty level: Not the Beatles one.
Distant Early Warning
I’m still working on moving this newsletter off of Substack to my own WordPress site, which I’ve been running for 10+ years on extrafuture.com. The reasons for this are myriad, but here’s a short list: Substack is at best ambivalent towards nazis, bigots, and other shitheads of their ilk, they’re an a16z portfolio company (these things are related), they take 10% of any subscriber payments I get, they demand exclusivity of subscriptions, the list goes on. When I started this I chose Substack because I saw others having success there, the UI was simple, and I needed to do _something_ or go stark raving mad.
The immediate danger has passed. Let’s take this ad-hoc infrastructure and replace it with something better. I will send more details on this when I finally flip the switch. You shouldn’t notice much difference, except for one thing: You will get this newsletter from a different email address.
The Weather
Over on my YouTube channel @philnelson I’ve been taking over for the late David Lynch and providing morning weather reports along with musical remembrances. Today we’re listening to Kendrick. Congrats.
The Video Game History Foundation dropped an incredible new resource, the VGHF Library, full of fascinating artifacts like old game magazines and promotional material.
“Introduction to a Self Managed Life” is a 13-hour presentation covering the soup-to-nuts pipeline for hosting your own internet infrastructure, going in to pretty deep detail on each step. I fucking love it.
