@gurupanguji IMO - he’s not totally wrong. If we look at the evolution of HTML from its roots as an application of SGML, it’s clear that the intent was completely different. Instead, HTML has become its own platform, and with the inclusion of JavaScript, cookies and other technologies the web has been subverted to be more of an application environment, largely held by large corporations (Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft, and on and on). Originally it was an information dispersal pipeline, now the web and browser have become very different from those origins.

That is what I am reacting to. If he’d stuck to that character, and even refined it more, then he could have built a perspective that would have provided the rhetorical center that he needed. But that’s just not where his writing is now.

@snowgoon Precisely. There is a long history of criticism, the whole concept of the press is based on the idea that the common person has right to criticize and expose those in power. Of course, the early newspapers had issues, but the concept was highly valuable and paved the way for the news media of today (I just wish they’d grow more of a backbone again).

The thing I am asking myself is: is there value in preserving my writing? The answer to that is a definite “maybe”. And, since I don’t feel like it’s a “no” then I should make some effort to preserve it. How much effort? That is yet to be determined.

@manton Nice feature… If you want to add some more interesting lists you could use something like Standard eBooks collections:

There’s about ten more of these lists in their collections. All with RSS feeds which should make them easy to add.

(And then maybe you can consider dropping the ISBN requirements for bookshelves… Many PD books don’t have ISBNs, like from Standard Ebooks, Project Gutenberg, etc.)

@manton If you want to go that far, maybe it would be best to consider using a headless server for your instance. You can then offer an integrated UI with limited features for micro.blog users, or they could use an alternative front-end (like Phanpy or Mastodon-FE) if they want all the Mastodon-like features.

@paulk Yes, there are several plugins for different static site generators. Many static site generators use standard Markdown files for generating websites, so it’s not all that difficult to take an Obsidian note and make it into a blog post.

In this case I’m using a plugin called micro.publish. It does a really nice job.

@paulk I’m also using Hugo as part of micro.blog. I dumped WordPress after years of it going downhill (in my opinion, which seems to contradict the mainstream).

The nice thing about micro.blog’s environment (for me) is it allows me to use Obsidian to do my writing, and then post to my blog with a plugin.

@hyblon Thanks. And guess what? I’m certain my advice doesn’t work for everyone. One of the motivations for writing this article is there isn’t a “one size fits all” approach to blogging. To me exposing the marketing BS was more important than telling anyone how to approach blogging. My advice may work for some, and may be utter garbage for others. :)

One of the reasons I got off WordPress was because it was more difficult to control things. Ever since they implemented Gutenberg I found it more and more difficult to be certain of what was going on.

There’s another way to look at this: who benefits? IMO, fixing errors (especially security related issues) benefits the viewer / reader of your site, doing as much as I can to ensure their safety. Fixing as many performance issues as I can also benefits them by lowering the costs (both the technical and financial costs) of loading a page on my site.

But I understand not everone thinks this way.

@dan You were one of the highest scoring sites on the list. But, I saw some other things that maybe you missed? However, most of those were one-offs (or very few occurrences). And yeah, I don’t know why the analytics thing is in there. Sure, I use analytics for simple things, but I don’t see why that should affect the scoring.

@bloftin2 Some semantic stuff, like headers, has always made sense to me. I was raised with a strong concept of hierarchy in documents via outlining. The trick is always applying the semantic markup consistently, not just on a per-article basis, but across your whole site.

For example, one of the things that I started doing recently was using a markdown table to center images and their captions. Makes a lot of sense, looks cleaner, etc. But now I need to go back through all my old articles and apply that markup on them, which is a PITA to say the least. But, I’m tackling it as part of the bigger switch to webp images. (Which I started last night.)

The struggle with all of this is it takes away from the time that I could be writing something new.

@bloftin2 Yeah, I’m still catching up on a lot of this stuff too… Especially a lot of the things that can be down with CSS these days. Like you, I haven’t done a lot of webdev stuff since the 1990s, so trying to catch up is pretty tricky. And to make it more complicated, insert Hugo into the mix, so I’m really learning Hugo, CSS, and HTML5.

@jekratz I would suggest that people using the Write.as 5-year plan are doing so because they need more blogs, and when compared to the price of the standard Pro plan it makes sense to spend the extra money up-front.

Standard Pro plan is $72/yr with up to three blogs. The 5/yr would give me the same number of blogs, but only be $50/yr. Saving $22/yr is significant, no matter how many blogs you are using. (I think the primary motivation for using any paid plan is custom domains, customer support, and to support the devs, IMO.)

Certainly people likely look at features beyond pricing and spec sheets. However, when comparing platforms in writing some type of framework is necessary. Pricing and features are the most logical place to start. My choice to look at expense per blog is my perspective, and I own that. Others may not look at it that way.
