Regulation, breaches, data brokers, and what the surveillance trade is doing this month.
Data brokers republish your name, your addresses and your phone number, and they will keep doing it until somebody files an opt-out. VALT files them, then checks again.

Get VALT, sign in with your email, and choose Data removal on the plan screen. Setup asks for your legal name, date of birth, email and current address, and you sign the authorization in the app. It never asks for a Social Security number or a government ID.

A VPN is a promise about who holds what. This page is the shape of that promise: the parties involved, what each of them is given, and what is never collected in the first place.
The path
WireGuard, everywhere, with no legacy fallbacks kept alive for a comparison table.
WireGuard is roughly four thousand lines. OpenVPN and its dependencies run into the hundreds of thousands. Smaller is not a marketing point here, it is the reason independent review of the protocol is possible at all.
ChaCha20 for encryption, Poly1305 for authentication, Curve25519 for key exchange, BLAKE2s for hashing. There is no cipher negotiation, which means there is no downgrade to negotiate.
Reconnection after a network change is a single round trip, which is why moving from wifi to cellular does not produce the pause that made people turn older VPNs off.
Session keys rotate and old ones are discarded, so a key recovered later does not unlock traffic captured earlier.
Two columns, because the second one is the part that matters and most providers leave it implied.
Because running a paid service requires it
An email address, so you can sign in and we can tell you when something changes.
Whether the plan is current, and the receipt trail the app stores require. Payment is handled by Apple, Google or Stripe, so card numbers never reach us.
If you use data removal: the legal name, past addresses and date of birth a broker requires before it will accept an opt-out about you. Asked once, sent only inside requests you authorize.
Not deleted on a schedule. Not gathered at all
The sites you reach, the addresses they resolve to, and the times you reached them.
Which node you used, for how long, and how much passed through it, tied back to you.
Traffic contents. Your device holds the keys, so there is no version of this where we could read them and choose not to.
When it goes wrong
You do not have to take our word for the first two. Run a DNS leak test and the WebRTC leak test with the tunnel up, against us or against whatever you use now.
The DVPN plan covers every device you own. Data removal is a separate product with its own plan.
Our founder Zac was a software engineer in Silicon Valley, and what struck him was not a leak or a scandal. It was how ordinary the access was: how much sensitive personal data sat within reach of anybody on the inside, as a matter of routine.
VALT does two unglamorous things about that. It routes your traffic through a network no single company operates, and it files the opt-outs that get your details off the sites republishing them. Both are maintenance work, and both only matter if somebody keeps doing them.
We sell a subscription. We do not buy personal data, sell it, or broker it, and we would rather say that plainly than build a business that needs a paragraph to explain.

The decentralized VPN and automated data removal, on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows.
Subscriptions. The DVPN and Data removal are separate products, each with its own plan, and a higher yearly removal tier is there for people who want a named specialist.
That is the entire business model. There is no advertising, no free tier subsidised by something else, and no arrangement where your data pays part of the bill.
No. Your device holds the keys and does the encrypting, and we are not in the path your packets take. There is no version of this where we could read them and choose not to.
What we do hold is written out in full on the technology page, including the removal details brokers require, which are asked for once and sent only inside requests you authorize.
We stopped building it. A consent-based market only pays anybody meaningfully at a scale we were not going to reach, and running one sat badly beside spending the day filing opt-outs against the same trade.
iPhone, Android, macOS and Windows, plus the Chrome extension. The DVPN plan covers every device you use, and Data removal is its own plan. The downloads page has every link.

The right to have your data deleted is the one VALT files against on your behalf. Most of these laws grant a version of it.
A VPN whose exits are run by independent operators, not one company. You pick a city, and your connection goes through one node there.
It hides the sites you open from your ISP. But one company runs every server, so that company can now see what your ISP used to see.
The exits belong to independent operators on the Sentinel network. They run their own nodes and set their own prices. No single company sits on every connection.
Node hosts on the Sentinel network run their own machines and set their own prices. Most nodes are proxy nodes; about one in ten is a home connection. VALT’s list refreshes every 10 minutes. On 23 September 2026 it held about 1,300 nodes in 192 cities, and it changes every day.
If a node drops, the app moves you to another node in the same city. Sentinel lists VALT among the apps built on its network: see Sentinel’s list of apps.
On the DVPN, VALT doesn’t keep the sites you visit, your DNS lookups, your traffic or your IP address. DNS lookups go to Cloudflare’s resolver, 1.1.1.1.
It doesn’t hop you through several nodes: one node carries each connection. It isn’t free. And it doesn’t touch what’s already published about you. That’s Data removal, a separate product with its own plan.
On macOS, iOS, Android, Windows and the Chrome extension, with one plan for all your devices.
Every major privacy law of the last decade gives you the right to have your personal data erased. Exercising that right means writing to hundreds of companies, one at a time, forever. That gap is the whole problem.
A broker that removes your listing this month can republish it next month, because the listing was never the source. It was assembled from public records and purchased files, and those keep flowing. Send one request and you have cleaned a symptom. Send it again every time the record reappears and you have actually changed your exposure.
That is the difference between a privacy tool you cancel and go back to where you started, and one where the work accumulates. Not because anything is owned, but because somebody keeps filing.
Every major privacy law since 2018 has moved in one direction: away from "companies may collect whatever they can" and toward rights held by the person the data is about. Access. Erasure. Portability. Consent.
Article 17's right to be forgotten turns deletion into law, with fines reaching 4% of global revenue. The steal-and-sell model gets its first real bill.
Californians gain the right to know what is collected, to delete it, and to opt out of its sale. "Do Not Sell My Personal Information" links appear on broker sites for the first time.
California's CPRA adds correction rights and a dedicated enforcement agency. Virginia, Colorado and Connecticut take effect the same year, and India's DPDP Act extends data rights to over a billion people.
Texas and a widening roster of states come online, and the EU's AI Act demands provable lineage for training data. Regulators now assume you have rights over your data. What is missing is a way to use them.
Rights without infrastructure are paperwork. GDPR gives you erasure, but exercising it means contacting hundreds of companies individually and then checking whether any of them complied. The distance between what the law promises and what one person can realistically do is the gap VALT works in. Browse the full landscape in our global privacy regulations database.
A list of the broker sites that publish a record matching you, named individually, including the ones that came back with nothing. You cannot exercise a right against a company you cannot name.
Opt-outs sent in each broker's own format under the law that applies, then sent again when a listing reappears. How removal works.
Removal deals with what is already published. A decentralized VPN reduces what gets collected next, by routing your traffic through exits no single company operates. The architecture.
What VALT does not do is trade any of it. There is no marketplace, no revenue share, and no arrangement where your data pays part of the bill. The subscription is the whole business model, and we do not buy personal data from any company on the list we file against.
The current data economy works because taking personal data is cheap and consequences are rare. Both conditions are eroding. Regulation keeps raising the cost of hoarding it, breach liability keeps compounding, and the number of jurisdictions granting a deletion right keeps growing.
None of that helps you this year on its own. A law you cannot practically use is a law the industry can price in. The useful response is narrow and unglamorous: keep filing, keep checking, and reduce what gets collected in the first place.
Two products, each with its own plan: a DVPN for what happens next, and automated removal for what is already published.
