The project that was winding down at work is still winding down. It’s one of those long tail type situations where I expect the contract won’t be closed (meaning I won’t be able to log time on it) for another three months. I did already join a team for an existing customer to help with their workload but I’m skeptical how much I’ll enjoy this new project. The customer and team are very excited about generative AI and seemed a bit bamboozled by the fact that I didn’t want a Codex API key. I think it’s concerning that a news organization is so excited about genAI so we’ll see where it goes. So far I’m feeling out of my depth with the new project because it’s such a different environment than the last one.

About two weeks ago, I wrote about being a furry . I was very nervous publishing that post since some people I know IRL read this blog, and I also decided to share it with some other people in my life.
The reception was much more positive and accepting than I expected. The responses can be summarized like this:

“Yeah, I already thought so but I was afraid to ask”
“👍”
“Great, now all my friends are furries”
“Well written but who cares”
“Thank you for trusting me enough to share this”

I shouldn’t be surprised that my friends are so accepting and lovely but I have a habit of expecting the worst and I was blown away by all the positive reactions I got.

I actually said out loud that I’m not happy at my current job. So I think it’s time that I start looking elsewhere. It’s bittersweet because I like my colleagues and there are a lot of aspects of the work I enjoy. However, the focus of the company on genAI is very discouraging to me. I just feel like the company and I no longer agree on some fundamental moral principles that I hold in high regard.

The state of software engineering

I fear that the whole software industry is barreling towards a demise at the hands of this genAI hype and that the result will be worse software and lower expectations. The pride I feel in the craft is shared by fewer and fewer of my peers because they have become addicted to the dopamine hits produced by the LLM slot machines. I need to think about where my priorities lie and whether continuing to work in a field that embraces a morally reprehensible technology is something I want.

There are still some trainings and other things planned the coming months that I want to attend so this probably won’t be a short-term process. I don’t even know what the job market looks like because I’ve held this position for eight years. We’ll see. However it ends up going, I’ll probably write a blog post about it.

Imagemagick Shenanigans

A while ago I was working on this site and figured I wanted a logo. Now, I’m terrible at drawing and so I decided to try and learn a bit of ImageMagick to see if I could generate an image instead. As a starting point, I picked an image I commissioned after I received the final version of my refsheet:

I had two products in mind: A 88x31 button and a logo for the top of the site. Now, I had not much of an idea what I wanted other than that, so I figured I could just re-use the background color that Feve already picked. It gives some nice contrast for an otherwise pretty monochrome website.

In case you don’t know, ImageMagick is a program that lets you do all kinds of stuff to do with images. From generating gradients to cutting out masks, resizing, compressing, moving, and all kinds of other things. For the button, I just had to do five things as I saw it:

Create an 88x31 canvas
Extend the existing gradient to cover the whole canvas
Put a border around it
Put the image in there somewhere
Put some text on it

Sounds reasonable, right? Yeah, sure.

The first step is easy!

Wow! That’s such a nice and tidy command. It’s very clear what it does, right? It makes an image with a given size, puts a gradient on it, and saves it to button.png. Cool!

Next up; adding a border around it. Let me just quickly search around the docs. Huh, I don’t see any argument that does what I want. Fine, I can think of a workaround:
First, I’ll create an 88x31 image with the border gradient, and then put the background on top of it, leaving some space around:

Huh, that’s not what I expected. Now I have two files: button-0.png for the border, and button-1.png for the background. Okay, that’s fine. I guess you can’t do two things at once. It’s a good thing you can combine images!

Now that we’ve managed this, I think it should be trivial to make one with the image on it. It’s just another -composite operation but with some coordinates of where to put the new layer.

Ew, do you see that? The gradients don’t quite match up. There’s a line between the square where the smile image sits and the generated gradient. That’s not pretty at all! Fine, I’ll open up Krita and just get rid of the background. It doesn’t need to be pretty, because the result will be resized to be just 27x27 pixels anyway.

I’m used to commands doing one thing with a bunch of arguments, and each argument being used just once. It took me a while to realize that ImageMagick doesn’t work that way! Instead, it just processes the arguments from left to right. So if you provide the same argument (I guess it’s called an operation) twice, it’ll be executed twice! Also, the order of operations is obviously relevant once you realize this.

Now all that’s left is adding some text! I know ImageMagick can do this from my time playing around with phpBB back in like.. 2004? It had this feature where you could upload a badge background and it could generate icons with text on them. Maybe this was a plugin, I don’t remember. Anyway, the important thing is that it can do text!

Turns out there’s a default white background if you don’t specify one.

This one has been a long time coming. I’m quite nervous posting this here, because I know that some of my real-life friends know this site is mine. If you know me in real life: hello! Let’s see if our friendship can withstand the groundbreaking discovery that I am a dog on the internet. ¹

Where did this come from?

When I really think about it, this seems to have been a part of me for a long time already. I have fond memories from when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old and we’d visit our cousin. We would play “family” and my sister and cousin would always be a parent or a child, and I would always be the dog. At the time, my thinking probably didn’t go much further than “dogs are neat” ².

Fast forward to when I became active on Discord around 2016. At first I was only in a handful of servers that were not at all furry-related or even furry-adjacent. As these servers grew, a few furries eventually joined and started sharing art and memes, which I often enjoyed.

A few years later still, I was introduced to the wonderful world of kink by some friends. After attending the local munch a few times, some people persuaded me to go to a kink-specific event in Amsterdam ³. There I quickly found a group of friends with whom I still spend time today. When attending kink events, I would see puppy players ⁴ and this always looked kind of interesting to me. The way they could just let go and enjoy being in the moment for a while was very appealing. So appealing, in fact, that I discovered ✨Yet Another Kink✨.

Now as you can probably guess, acting like an animal in a BDSM ⁵ context comes pretty close to having an animal persona (fursona) in other contexts. And so naturally my media consumption and online interactions shifted more towards the furry fandom. In puppy play I developed a distinct personality from my “normal” self, but the context and scene of puppy play does not let me fully express this part of myself. It’s a great activity that lets me leave the everyday worries and stressors of my life behind me for a while but I feel like there’s more to it than just that.

Just to be clear: Even though I experience an overlap between puppy play (and thus BDSM) and my furry side, this is definitely not the case for everyone! Unfortunately, there are also those in the fandom that look down on puppy players like they don’t belong in the fandom, and I find it strange that a group of people who are used to being marginalized would propagate this inside their own community.

To me, being a furry can apply to a broader part of my life than puppy play can. I’m sure that for others this division is different or doesn’t exist. Everyone is different after all. And so, in August 2026, I decided to take the plunge and formalize my furry-ness by designing a fursona. You can see him (me?) sprinkled throughout this post and site.

So what does it mean to be furry?

Good question. The folks over at furscience have done much more research than I have. So, do visit their site and read their research to learn more about what science has to say about it. I also highly recommend this video by A Brush With Bekah which explores the subject in quite some detail.

I am hardly an authority on the subject

Just because this is how I experience the fandom and what it means to be a furry doesn’t mean that this is a universal truth for everyone. I’m sure there are plenty of folks out there who don’t recognize themselves or their experiences in what I mention here. That doesn’t make their experience any more or less valid than mine; just different.

Inclusivity

My own participation in the furry fandom initially began mostly because furry communities are very welcoming to newcomers and accepting of things that are often stigmatized by the broader public. For example, when I had a rainbow flag 🏳️‍🌈 next to my Twitter name, I would often get hateful messages from total strangers who had all kinds of Opinions about gay people. My Twitter profile didn’t even mention whether I was gay, all I did wrong in their eyes was have a rainbow next to my name.

Persist anyway.

Furry spaces, on the other hand, are disproportionately populated by LGBTQIA+ individuals ⁶. This feels extremely comfortable and welcoming compared to my normal life. The fact that I can easily pass as a cis straight white dude means I don’t experience overt aggression or hatred often. However, the fact that this code-switching is even needed is a mental load that I’d love to do without. I seldom show my true self in public out of fear of (micro-)aggressions. My husband and I never hold hands because I fear we might get beaten up. I do not feel the same way in furry spaces. There, I can be my true self without fear and have many positive interactions because of it!

It’s ridiculous that people need the anonymity of a fursona just so they can love who they love without fear of hatred and aggression, but here we are.

One participant of that FurScience research ⁷ put it very aptly:

There’s so much respect for people that are not quote-unquote normal, because I think most people in this fandom, at some point or another[,] have felt outcast, and they don’t want anyone else to feel that way.

Banding together for common causes

Another aspect of the furry community that I admire is the ability for (almost) everyone to come together in support of a cause. One such cause that comes to mind is that one time furries saved a library (blogged about by a fellow furry, I might add).

Another one close to my heart is the critical stance with regard to LLM technologies (ChatGPT et al.); a large part of the fandom is creative expression through art. That can be painting, drawing, music, fursuiting, or all kinds of art. In fact, did you know that one of the oldest known statues is of an anthropomorphic lion guy?⁸ Anyway, generative AI systems are created to automate the creative process. They’re not very good at it, but still people are flocking en masse to these tools to create indistinct, slightly-off pretenses at art. Many of the folks in the fandom that I’ve talked to share my view that there is no real ethical way to use these tools; either because of climate concerns, societal issues, moral reasons about how these models are trained, or any number of other reasons⁹.

Having an online presence separate from my legal identity

I used to be very present online with my own identity. All my accounts used the same username and used my legal name as my display name. I no longer believe this is a prudent decision, in part due to the rise of fascism and surveillance in the world. My fursona Zip lets me interact online without revealing who I am in the real world. This is a freeing feeling.

Expressing myself

I often have trouble expressing my emotions. I’ve often wondered whether I might be autistic, it wouldn’t be a surprise if I was.¹⁰ Anyway, stickers of my sona help me express myself when texting with my husband and (some) friends. Distilling an emotion into a clear, comic-style image removes many of the complications I encounter when trying to express myself in words. And let’s be real; all the stickers I’ve put in this post are adorable!

Why now?

Why would I decide that now is the time to come out as furry to the world? Why do I even care about coming out at all? Another good question! I don’t think I can point to a single event or decision that has caused this post. This part of me has been growing for years now, with the complete support of my wonderful husband. I already sometimes hide that I’m gay; I already sometimes hide my hobbies out of fear of annoying people; I already sometimes hide my true feelings out of fear of offending people. I’m done hiding. This is a part of me.

The creation of my first refsheet¹¹ was a great exercise of expression and freedom that I haven’t felt in a long time. It was wonderful to create a new persona from scratch and include all the parts that I think make me me. I think the completion of that final image might have been the final push I needed to write this post. I never expected I would be so happy to see it, and the artwork that I’ve already commissioned based on it. In the end, I just want to share what makes me happy with the people I care about.

I don’t expect people who know me by my real name to suddenly call me Zip ¹² and start treating me like a dog. Nothing really needs to change. My parents don’t need to know (I’m sure they would come to accept it but I’m not testing my hypothesis) and I’m not going to run around the office proclaiming my new identity. I’m still me; it’s just that you now know a bit more about what makes me tick.

So now what?

I don’t know. I’ve said my piece. I’ve shared my joy. I’ll probably start changing some of my online accounts to represent my fursona instead of my legal identity. Maybe I’ll send you a sticker or two. Honestly, I’m not sure what the future will hold. I don’t expect this post to make a meaningful difference. However, it feels great to get this off my chest and out into the world.

P.S: to the coworker that once called me a puppy and good boy out of nowhere like two years ago while we were on a walk: I don’t think you know just how seen I felt in that moment. I wish I had mentioned it then but I hope that reading this post is a satisfactory substitute. I’ve been trying to drop hints ever since but I don’t think you’ve picked up on any of them.

We came back from vacation last week. We first went to Energylandia in Poland, then to attend a wedding in Bratislava, and finally to a campsite in Austria.

Vacations always leave me feeling conflicted. On the one hand, it’s a time for relaxing and such, but on the other hand, it’s a great time to actually go out and wander around. Thankfully, the weather forced our hand because it was 40 degrees for the first week and there’s no way I’ll go do anything active in that weather.

The refsheet for my fursona was completed, and I got a nice profile picture to go with it. Check out my socials to see it, or take a look at the new button I made for the site.

To make the button (also, check out the new .well-known/button.json if you’re a nerd) I wanted to use simple tools, so I went with ImageMagic. Have a look here to see how I did it.

The project at work is winding down (after I finally manage to connect to the database to run an import script) and then I’ll move to the next one. I’m excited to see what it’ll be.

Hummus

Ingredients

500g dried chickpeas
20 g baking soda
4 cloves garlic
2 jars Tahini (about 200g each)
Juice of 3 lemons
1 teaspoon salt
A few twigs of parsley
2 teaspoons paprika powder
1 table spoon cumin powder
a half teaspoon chili powder
6 table spoons chipotle sauce
6 green peppers from a jar, stems removed
1.5 teaspoon chili flakes

Prerequisites

A pot large enough to hold the chickpeas once they double in size
A food processor with a capacity of at least 2L

Steps

Preparation (The night before)

Put the chickpeas into a pot and fill with plenty of water
Add 10 grams of the baking soda and stir
Let rest for at least 12 hours

Cooking the chickpeas

Drain the water and fill again, covering by at least 3 cm
Add the other 10 grams of baking soda and stir
Bring to a boil and let simmer for around 45 minutes, until the chickpeas are very soft
(optional): After around 20 minutes, fish out a few chickpeas to use as garnish
When done, collect about 200 mL of the water, drain the rest

Putting it all together

While simmering, add all the other ingredients to your food processor and process into a paste
Let the chickpeas cool for a bit and then add to the processor
Process again until smooth
Taste for flavour, adjust if necessary
Once flavour is good, add the reserved water in small amounts until the texture is good
The hummus will firm up a bit in the fridge, so aim for a bit softer than you eventually want

Storing it

Once the taste and texture is as you like, put the hummus in your container (I use a 2.5L glass container from IKEA) but let it steam until it’s at room temperature. While this is going on, you can cover it with a towel to ensure nothing gets into the hummus.

In my experience, the hummus keeps in the fridge for 2-3 weeks if you are careful about hygiene. Don’t take any out with dirty cutlery and only take it out of the fridge and open the container when you’re taking it out.

Eating it

My husband and I enjoy this breakfast:

Spread some hummus on a tortilla or other flatbread with some chopped bell peper, a few slices of cucumber and a slice of chicken breast deli meat.

I Am Not a Designer

Every now and then, I get hit with the urge to make this website prettier. What is prettier you ask? Good question. I’m not sure; I think it just means making it look less like the template I’m using. Add something ✨unique✨.

As is the case every time, I’ll have been browing other peoples’ websites which are all super creative and unique looking and have that extra bit of flair that my site lacks.

I think it’s time for me to accept this.

There’s a reason why I prefer working as a back-end developer. There I only need to talk JSON or sometimes XML, and write some SQL queries. It’s all standardized and structured and neat. I like that. I don’t want to choose about what looks good and works well and is accessible and whatever. Why pretend otherwise on this site? I make it for my own benefit and there is no benefit to me in spending hours fiddling with CSS and HTML to make it prettier.

After all, I prefer reading blogs over RSS anyway, where CSS doesn’t even apply.

Maybe in the future I’ll be hit with a bout of inspiration and actually change some stuff around, but until then I’ve decided that I’m fine with how things look.

I once thought I could have a hand at drawing too, but I learned that that’s also not something I want to invest time to improve. So there I made the decision to just commission artists for the stuff I want.

I’m going to try something new. Every now and then (though let’s be honest, this won’t be more than 3 times a year) I want to post a little bit about what I’m doing and what’s keeping me busy at the moment. No big blog posts or special subjects, just a little collection of stuff.

I think it’ll be nice for myself (kind of like journaling for some people) to look back to see what was on my mind some time ago. Who knows, maybe it’ll go somewhere.

Here we go

I’m going on vacation in a few days to attend a wedding in Bratislava. I’ve never been so Slovakia so I’m excited to go. My husband decided that we are also going to visit Energylandia in Poland because suddenly it’ll be relatively nearby. We’re both a bit hesitant because as far as we know the acceptance of gay couples isn’t great there. Fortunately, we don’t present as gay and can pass as just two friends, so hopefully it’ll be fine.

At work I’m continuously fighting against the corporate desire to increase LLM usage at all costs. I strongly believe that there is intrinsic value in human thought and writing that cannot be replicated by an unfeeling robot. Sure, I’m a programmer so feelings don’t matter much in what I write, but in this case I’m wary of the risks of outsourcing thought to a company until we’re no longer capable of critical thinking ourselves and then having to rent it back at a premium.

I recently commissioned a refsheet for my sona, so I guess I can’t really deny that I’m a bit of a furry. I’ve been active in furry spaces online for a while now, but this feels like one of those tipping points. I can’t imagine getting a fursuit (🤑🤑🤑) anytime soon (if ever) but maybe in a few years I’ll feel brave enough to change my Slack profile image to a nice icon of my sona. Who knows.

Anyway, that’s it for now.

Enabling Full Disk Encryption on Fedora

Back when I installed Fedora Workstation on my desktop, I enabled full disk encryption. Obviously, doing it during install was a breeze and I highly recommend this if it’s an option for you. However, for some reason I later decided to decrypt my drives. This was partially motivated by a coworker who convinced me that I was missing out on a lot of performance due to all the cryptography overhead on all my disk operations.

After running a completely unencrypted setup for several months, I’ve decided that actually I don’t notice any performance difference and would like to return to a fully encrypted setup.

I didn’t want to do a fresh install, because I’ve got everything set up just right and doing that again sounds like a huge pain. So I needed some way to encrypt the data in-place.

Fortunately, this flow is pretty well supported in Linux and the whole process was surprisingly painless. So, for the benefit of anyone who’s interested in doing this, here’s how I did it:

Preparation

Because we’ll be overwriting all the data on our disk, I think it’s probably wise to make a backup of your stuff. I didn’t do this because I’m lazy and overconfident in my ability to do computer stuff, but I’ll mention it just so that you can’t get angry at me when you accidentally lose all your data.

A note before we begin

My setup uses only BTRFS filesystems. Some of the FS-specific commands (like resizing) will be different if you use something like ext4 or whatever. Kagi is your best friend.

I did this on Fedora Workstation 44. I can’t imagine that the commands will change drastically anytime soon, but keep that in mind if you’re using something else.

Encrypting secondary (non-os) disks

Before I start the encryption process of my primary disk (the one that contains the actual operating system) I first went through the process with one of my secondary disks. The data on this disk is already on my NAS anyway so even a catastrophic failure would be easy to recover from.

Most of the steps are also applicable to the main disk. The only difference is that you can’t re-encrypt your OS disk while you’re using it, so you’ll need a recovery USB for that. You’ll need a bit of free space on the disk (100 MB should be more than enough) to write LUKS headers to it.

Step 1: Make room for the LUKS header

The LUKS2 header is 16 MiB. However, it’s possible that your filesystem won’t shrink exactly to the requested size. So we’ll include some margin for error. We’ll recover this later.

Replace /mountpoint in the below command with your actual mountpoint. I’ll use it as placeholder in the rest of this post.

sudo btrfs filesystem resize -32M /mountpoint

Step 2: Unmount the disk (optional)

cryptsetup has support for online encryption. That means you can keep using the disk while the encryption process is running and it’ll determine on the fly whether your operations are plain or encrypted. This will be slower and slightly more error prone but if you absolutely cannot unmount the disk, it’s possible to skip.

sudo umount /mountpoint

Step 3: Encrypt in place

Here’s the scary part; actually encrypting your data. The command will ask for a passphrase. The passphrase needs to be secure and doesn’t need to be very memorable. We’re going to add automatic unlock using a keyfile later.

Start by getting your actual device name, it’ll be something that starts with /dev For this post, I’ll assume it’s /dev/sda1

lsblk

sudo cryptsetup reencrypt --encrypt --reduce-device-size 32M /dev/sda1

This step can take a while (it’s reading and overwriting your entire disk after all) so you can probably step away and go do something else for a while.

If you decided not to unmount your drive before, you’ll need to do it now:

sudo umount /mountpoint

Step 4: Adding a keyfile

Now that the disk is encrypted, it’s time to create a keyfile so we can automatically unlock it in the future. For this, I created a new directory /etc/cryptsetup-keys.d in which the key files live. Be sure to modify the file permissions so rogue programs can’t just read your keys.

sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/etc/cryptsetup-keys.d/sda1.key
sudo chmod 0400 /etc/cryptsetup-keys.d/sda1.key
sudo cryptsetup luksAddKey /dev/sda1 /etc/cryptsetup-keys.d/sda1.key

LUKS performs PBKDF to derive a key encryption key (KEK) from your passphrase or keyfile. This KEK is then used to unwrap the actual volume key stored in the keyslot. Security people have thought long and hard about this and I won’t pretend to know why this is secure.

What I do know is that the default implementation imposes a pretty hefty “cost” on this process. Basically the higher this cost, the more complicated it is to brute-force your way into the encrypted value or something. This is used to protect against people chosing ridiculously weak passwords.

Because we generated a sufficiently random keyfile, we don’t need this extra cost. All it does is slow down our boot times. So, if your threat model allows for reduced security in exchange for faster boot times, you can reduce the cost:

# First, find the key slot used by your keyfile:
sudo cryptsetup open --test-passphrase --verbose --key-file /etc/cryptsetup-keys.d/sda1.key /dev/sda1 
# This should output a line like "Key slot 1 unlocked.". That means we're using slot 1.

sudo cryptsetup luksConvertKey --key-slot 1 --pbkdf pbkdf2 \
 --pbkdf-force-iterations 1000 \
 --key-file /etc/cryptsetup-keys.d/sda1.key /dev/sda1

Step 5: Get UUIDs

We now need to get the UUID of the encrypted volume and the disk so that we can update our /etc/fstab and /etc/crypttab

Think of a name you want the encrypted volume to be known as, use it for <name>

sudo cryptsetup luksUUID /dev/sda1 # --> For use in /etc/crypttab
sudo cryptsetup open /dev/sda1 <name>
sudo blkid /dev/mapper/<name> # --> For use in /etc/fstab
sudo cryptsetup close <name>

Step 6: Updating fstab and crypttab

Add your newly encrypted volume to /etc/crypttab:

Pick the variant that applies to your setup, either an SSD or hard disk. Picking the wrong one isn’t catastrophic, but it will have a performance impact.

`no-read-workqueue` / `no-write-workqueue`	Bypass dm-crypt’s worker threads, processing crypto inline. Lower latency on fast SSDs and modern CPUs that support AES-NI

then, in /etc/fstab:

`noatime`	Don’t update access timestamps on read. Reduces writes on SSDs (so improves lifetime) and slight performance boost on HDDs
`nofail`	Don’t fail the boot if this mount fails.
`nodiscard`	Disable inline TRIM at filesystem level. Pair with `fstrim.timer` for scheduled TRIM instead.
`space_cache`	Use a modern free space tree rather than legacy cache
`compress`	Slightly compress data on write (at level 3) if possible. can increase throughput because there is less traffic going to the disk
`x-systemd.requires`	Mark the crypttab entry as required. Ensured the mounts are performed in order
`x-systemd.device-timeout`	If the mount hasn’t worked after 10 seconds, assume it won’t work ever
`x-gvfs-show`	Show the disk in GNOME file manager
`x-gvfs-name`	Name to use when showing the disk

Step 7: Activate and verify

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl start systemd-cryptsetup@<name>.service
sudo mount /mountpoint
findmnt /mountpoint

If your disk is an SSD, enable the TRIM timer because we disabled it in fstab:

sudo systemctl enable --now fstrim.timer

Step 8: Reboot

Reboot the system to verify that automatic unlocking on boot works.

Encrypting a system disk

Now that our additional disks are securely¹ encrypted, it’s time to encrypt the main OS disk. After all, if we leave that unencrypted, then anyone can just take the key files from there and decrypt the other disks easily.

This process is a bit more involved because we’ll need to boot into a live USB and also the risk (at least for me) is a bit higher because I really don’t want to have to re-install my OS because I broke something².

Step 1: Preparation

Before we shut down our computer, make sure you know the UUID of your root filesystem. You can find it with lsblk -f

Also prepare a live USB that you’ll boot into next.

Finally, you can shut down the computer.

Step 2: Getting Ready for Encryption

Boot into the live USB environment and open a terminal. Become root if you aren’t already.
Start by mounting the device, shrinking the filesystem, and unmounting again:

For this post I’ll assume you’ve got a fancy nvme SSD. So I’ll use /dev/nvme0n1p3 as device name. You should obviously use your actual device name that you got from lsblk above.

mount /dev/nvme0n1p3 /mnt
btrfs filesystem resize -32M /mnt
umount /mnt

Step 3: Encryption

Just like before , the process will ask for a passphrase. If we set up everything right, you’ll almost never need it. So be sure to pick something sufficiently random and long.

cryptsetup reencrypt --encrypt --reduce-device-size 32M /dev/nvme0n1p3

This will take some time. In my case, encrypting a 1 TiB SSD it took about an hour.

When it’s done, find the UUID of the new LUKS partition with lsblk -f.

Step 4: Resizing the filesystem

We reduced the filesystem size to make space for the LUKS header. Now that we’re done we can resize it back to the maximum possible size.

cryptsetup open /dev/nvme0n1p3 system
mount /dev/mapper/system /mnt
btrfs filesystem resize max /mnt
umount /mnt

Step 5: Making sure we can boot

Because the root filesystem is now encrypted at boot time, we need to give the kernel a bit of information about our setup.

First, we need to mount all the filesystems so we can chroot into them. Find out the device names for your boot partitions with lsblk -f

mount -t btrfs -o "noatime,subvol=root,compress=zstd:3" /dev/mapper/system /mnt
mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/boot
mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt/boot/efi

for d in dev proc sys run; do mount --bind /$d /mnt/$d; done

chroot /mnt /bin/bash

That’s that³.

Open /etc/default/grub and modify the kernel parameters with the LUKS partition. Also temporarily disable SELinux enforcing⁴.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="[...] rd.luks.uuid=<LUKS UUID> enforcing=0

Configure SELinux relabeling: touch /.autorelabel

Generate GRUB config:

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2.cfg
grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2-efi.cfg # <-- Only on UEFI systems

Add an entry to /etc/crypttab for your new encrypted partition:

cryptroot UUID=<LUKS UUID> none discard,no-read-workqueue,no-write-workqueue

Regenerate initramfs so it loads cryptsetup on boot:

dracut -f --regenerate-all

exit the chroot

Unmount all disks in reverse order and close the encrypted partition:

for d in run sys proc dev; do umount -l /mnt/$d; done

umount /mnt/boot/efi
umount /mnt/boot
umount /mnt

cryptsetup close system

Reboot and log into your system.

Step 6: Clean up

This first boot can take a while. SELinux is relabeling all your files.

Open /etc/default/grub and remove the enforcing=0 part from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX that you added earlier.

Trigger relabeling again: touch /.autorelabel

Generate GRUB config:

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2.cfg
grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2-efi.cfg # <-- Only on UEFI systems

Reboot once again.

Step 7: Adding a recovery key

If you want, you can add a third unlock method to your OS disk (this also works for data disks actually): A recovery key.

This is basically a passphrase but it’s generated by the computer.

sudo systemd-cryptenroll --recovery-key /dev/nvme0n1p3

It’ll prompt you to enter your passphrase and show the recovery key when it’s done. Be sure to store this key in a safe place.

Step 8: Enabling TPM unlock

All this encryption is nice and all, but I don’t feel like typing a passphrase every time I start my computer. Fortunately, all modern computers have a TPM chip, or it might even be built-in in your processor! You may need to check your BIOS settings to make sure it’s enabled.

You can check if your system has a TPM module with systemd-cryptenroll --tpm2-device=list.
If that command returns nothing, then unfortunately you can’t do this. It’s worth double-checking your BIOS settings to see if maybe it’s disabled.

First, enable the tpm2-tss kernel module by creating a new file /etc/dracut.conf.d/tpm2.conf with this content:

add_dracutmodules+=" tpm2-tss "

We’ll keep the passphrase unlock method enabled as a backup, but we’ll add a second unlock slot for the TPM:

systemd-cryptenroll --tpm2-device auto --tpm2-pcrs=7 /dev/nvme0n1p3

See that --tpm2-pcrs argument? A PCR is a value that changes depending on certain system conditions. If the value changes, the TPM will refuse to release the key and you’ll instead be prompted to enter your passphrase.
PCR 7 reports the Secure Boot policy. So any changes to Secure Boot will disable the TPM.

If that happens, you can run the same systemd-cryptenroll command again after figuring out why your Secure Boot policy changed, to re-enroll it.

Now we need to instruct the system to use the TPM2 in /etc/crypttab:

cryptroot UUID=<LUKS UUID> none discard,no-read-workqueue,no-write-workqueue,tpm2-device=auto

Here we didn’t include the nofail option, because for the root OS disk, we absolutely do want to fail the boot if it can’t be unlocked.

Finally, we regenerate initramfs and reboot:

dracut -f --regenerate-all
reboot

Your system should now boot without prompting you for a passphrase.

Backing up the LUKS headers

The LUKS headers contain the encrypted keyslots needed to decrypt your disks.
If the headers get corrupted, you’ll have no way of recovering your data.

sudo cryptsetup luksHeaderBackup /dev/<device> --header-backup-file ~/luks-headers-<device>.img

This backup file still only contains the encrypted keyslots, so it’s not of much use without your passphrase, recovery key, unlock key, or TPM. Still, you should store it in a secure place.

Recovering from interrupted encryption

If the encryption process is interrupted for whatever reason (maybe you pressed ctrl+c, or lost power, or your computer crashed), you can easily resume it:

cryptsetup reencrypt --resume-only /dev/<device>

That’s it

That’s it! If everything worked as planned, your storage is now fully encrypted!

If you run into any issues, chances are that someone else has also run into them and you’ll be able to find the answer online. If all that doesn’t work, you’re welcome to get in touch . I’m by no means an expert but maybe I’ll have run into a similar issue and can offer some guidance.

The Anatomy of a First Aid Shift

As you might have seen , I’m a volunteer at the Dutch Red Cross. The Red Cross does a lot of stuff ¹, like providing disaster relief after natural disasters, giving first-aid courses, and taking care of victims of wars. There’s a lot more to this organization than the little slice I’m involved in, and I think it’s all pretty damn neat. This post is about one of the things that the Dutch Red Cross does, which is providing first-aid services at events.

Just to be sure we’re all on the same page: this is a personal blog post about my experiences as a volunteer at the Red Cross. The opinions expressed within it are my own, and the Red Cross does not explicitly endorse the opinions expressed in this post.

Background

Every year, the southern provinces of the Netherlands celebrate Carnival which is ostensibly a Catholic celebration (after the Catholic Church adopted it from the heathens). However, at least where I live, it’s mostly several days of people dressing up in costumes and partying all day long.

As is the case with any event where a lot of people get together, there are bound to be some accidents. As such, the government often requires that an event ensures that there are first-aid providers (and sometimes medical professionals) present as one of the conditions for granting a permit.
Event organizers contract the services of companies or organizations that provide first-aid services. In this case, the organization chose the Red Cross as first-aid provider.

How did I get here?

I’ve been following regular CPR and first-aid courses for a few years now. Not with the express intent of becoming a first-aid provider, but just because I think the courses are interesting, and I believe that the world is better off if everyone has at least a basic understanding of how to save a life. After one such course, where the provider had a very fancy CPR dummy that showed performance reports on my phone, I got a 100% score for CPR on an adult. I shared this result with a coworker (who I knew was also interested in this stuff), and he joked that I should join him as a Red Cross volunteer.

At first I jokingly dismissed him, but the thought kept bouncing around in my mind and eventually I decided to take him up on it. After all, while I’m sure my work is important for the economy or whatever, I did feel a severe lack of societal contribution. And what better societal value is there than helping people in need?

So, after completing the first-aid course (which was conveniently provided by the Red Cross), I signed up as a volunteer and had to complete a few e-learning modules that expand on what’s taught in the standard course, as well as provide information about how the Red Cross operates and what it means to be a volunteer in the organization. After this, I started attending their regular weekly(-ish) training evenings and eventually participated in a few internship shifts, which in this case doesn’t differ much from a normal shift other than that you’re there on top of the required number of first-aid providers by the event permit. After successfully completing these internships, I could sign up for events.

Before the Event

Before the event started at 13:00, we had to prepare our first-aid post. Not every event has actual posts, and sometimes you’re just two people walking around with backpacks. However, because this event had a lot of first-aid providers and the concentration of people could be predicted, there were posts. The post where I was stationed for the first day was located near the party tent on the town square. The event organizers already placed a tent and some signage, and we were to bring everything else. So, just before the shift was to begin, the logistics department dropped off our supplies, which included (among other things) a stretcher, a wheelchair, a cabinet with first-aid supplies, and some backpacks with supplies and AED’s.

After building up the post, we had some downtime before people would start coming for help. I like using this time to get to know the people whom I’ll be working with. In this case, there was someone who I’d worked with before, and also someone who was doing their first internship shift. I chatted a bit with the intern, who was understandably nervous, and reminded him that he had already completed all the required training and would be fine. And if not, there were two other people to back him up. The organization came by to give us a radio that we could use to communicate with the security stationed around the town square. Of course, we also had our own radios so we could communicate with the Red Cross dispatch center. The Red Cross dispatcher can radio in the location of potential people in need, as well as arrange emergency services in case someone needs more specialized help than we as first-aid providers can give.

The Event

In my (so far limited) experience, first-aid shifts can go two ways: Either you have nothing to do all day, or you’re so busy that your shift is over before you know it. This shift proved there is a third (much more preferrable) option: Having enough to do that you’re not sitting idle, but still having time to take a lunch break and sit down for a bit.

The day started off calm. A few people came by asking for band-aids and a surprising number of ladies came by asking if they could sit in the first-aid post to pump breast milk. The post wasn’t really set up to provide individual privacy (it was closed to the outside, but we had no privacy screens inside) but if they were fine with that, then we wouldn’t deny them. Of course, this did come with the sidenote that if someone came in who required help, then they would possibly need to give up the chair they were using. While we had women inside doing that, my male colleague and I went to stand outside in front of the tent so they had at least some privacy. Our female colleague would stay inside because we’re not supposed to leave anyone in the post without at least one Red Cross volunteer present.

A while after the event started, the intern and I went to have a look in the big party tent. While we were inside, we received a call over the security radio about someone who was suffering chest pains near the front of the tent. So, we made our way through the throngs of people to find nobody there. After asking around, we learned that security had taken the person outside. On the one hand, I was glad that they took him out of the crowded and noisy environment. On the other hand, it was freezing outside, and I don’t think it’s a great idea to take people out into that cold when they’re not dressed for it.

When we got to the patient ², my colleague immediately introduced himself and started asking a set of standard questions ³ about what happened and what the patient is feeling. It quickly became clear that the man (who I believe was in his eighties) had a known history of heart disease and took medication for this. That, on top of the symptoms, prompted us to radio dispatch to request an ambulance. We also wanted to transport the patient to the first-aid post where he could be inside in warmth while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. We asked one of the security guys if they could go to the first-aid post (a 1-minute walk) and fetch a wheelchair, but they all declined. So, we radioed our third colleague still in the post if she could bring it over. This isn’t an ideal situation because it meant we had to abandon the post, but the patient is more important than the stuff in a tent.

Once arrived at the post, I performed some additional checks on the man while my colleague talked to the man’s grandson, who had accompanied him. Soon the ambulance arrived and we handed over the patient. They performed some additional checks and eventually took him to the hospital.

Fortunately, we didn’t have any more people who needed an ambulance that day. The rest of the afternoon involved smaller injuries that we could handle without requiring medical assistance.

The End of the Shift

Our shift ended at 19:00 that day. Before that time, the night shift arrived at the post and we had a small handover. This involves describing the kinds of injuries that we had seen so far, as well as telling them that if security radioed about someone needing help in front of the stage, it would be smart to walk around the tent and enter through the emergency exit.

After this, it was time to head home, take a shower, and go to bed because the next day I had an early shift.

How can I use my work to help prevent climate change?

This post contains a lot of vibes

A lot of the stuff I’m discussing here is based on how I feel about power usage and not on actual measured facts. I believe that I’ve got a pretty solid grasp on this stuff but I’m ready to accept that I’m wrong.
If I’ve said something incorrect, do let me know and I’ll do my best to correct my mistake.

Computers use a lot of power¹. We can use this power to do all kinds of super cool stuff. We can write stuff and share it with people on blogs (like this one!), we can create magnificent digital paintings, we can create programs that take those paintings and turn them into different file formats, we can make websites to show those different files, we can write software to calculate the risk an insurance company takes by insuring you, we can run “““artificial””” intelligence, we can buy cheaply made plastic crap that will be used once and then thrown on a landfill, we can create automated pancreases . We can do much more, but I don’t feel like making a comprehensive list of everything computers do.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that I believe that in general computers have added more good than bad to society². But more and more, my optimism is being overshadowed by an immense feeling of dread. Where once my hobby and work felt guilt-free because it didn’t require me to actively burn gasoline or use disposable accessories or whatever, I now realize that there is a real climate impact in all this. For one, computers use electricity to run; and second, my computer is full of highly refined materials that take a lot of effort to extract and refine. Furthermore, the process of turning rocks into computer parts also takes energy and produces a bunch of nasty byproducts.

So what?

Okay, so I’ve established that using a computer isn’t magically free of a climate impact. I’m sure you already knew that. And I also don’t intend on never using a computer again and becoming a forester. But surely I can do something that helps me reduce the climate impact of my hobby and job somewhat without having to become a hermit? I mean, we can adjust our driving habits to improve fuel efficiency, and we can add insulation to a house to reduce the amount of gas we use to heat it. I’m guessing there are several steps I can take to improve my climate impact.

Now let’s be real. This is all very vibes-based, and I’m putting little research into this topic. For example, I’m not sure how much CO2e I’m causing by purchasing a new processor, nor how much I save or cause by recycling the old one. I did try to search online³ a bit for research but quickly gave up after seeing how dependent on a lot of factors the actual impact can be.

Let’s get to it

Reducing hardware spend

This one sounds very straightforward to me. Every time you buy something, it has to first be produced. I don’t have the numbers, but I bet that the process of extracting the resources out of the planet, turning them into refined metals, and turning those into computer parts takes a lot of energy⁴. So it makes sense to me that you would only replace a part if it’s broken or no longer meets your requirements. It’s nice to get a new processor every year, but do I really need that? No, I don’t. I’m still using a processor I bought in 2019 and my computer is working just fine⁵. In fact, it feels faster than my 2-year-old work laptop.

Of course there’s a tradeoff to this. Modern hardware tends to be more efficient, so at some point the savings made by ditching old components outweigh the impact of their production. This crossover point changes depending on your exact hardware and I guess even energy mix, but I’m sure that for most upgrades, we’re not running hardware until it doesn’t make sense from an efficiency standpoint. I understand that efficiency isn’t the only factor in determining when to upgrade something, but I will at least try to also consider it.

The EU has been working on legislation that would require companies to report on the climate impact of their supply chains. However, lobbying from conservative⁶ parties has weakened the law into a weak “try to see if you can get some insights into it maybe pretty please” guideline.

Using what you have efficiently

The impact of production and transport and whatever from purchasing something is very opaque to me, so I’m not sure how exactly to put it into words and translate my vibes into actual hard numbers. But for usage this is a different game altogether. The idea is simple to me: Who would use less energy; someone who keeps their computer turned on all the time, or someone who turns it off at night? I’m going to say that turning a device off when you’re not using it reduces the amount of energy it consumes.

In a similar vein, you can go through some settings on your computer (both in your BIOS and in the OS) to save power. From actually enabling the “power saver” mode, to more granular settings like reducing the screen time-out or letting spinning disks spin down if they’re often idle. Modern(ish) processors can

Write efficient code

This is the part that actually prompted me to write this post. I ran across websitecarbon.com which shows you the estimated CO2e impact of visiting a website. I thought this was a really neat idea, and that put me to thinking on where else computery stuff may be causing an “invisible” impact.

For websites it makes sense and is kind of ituitive for me. If you make the client device run a huge JavaScript file and download a lot of unoptimized images, it will need more network traffic to download everything (which makes your server and the intermediate infrastructure use more power) and spend more time processing the response, which again takes energy. The more scripts and images and requests a page causes, the worse its impact is⁷⁸.

Now this is something I can do! I’m a software engineer, I write code all the time! Maybe not websites that can be easily measured by websitecarbon, but still code that runs on servers that use electricity. So, I’m going to once again try and focus more on writing efficient code. It’ll be faster and use less power per operation, a win-win! Things like reducing the iterations of a loop needed⁹, or caching the result of an expensive¹⁰ operation instead of doing it again.

The takeaway

It’s clear that computer enthousiasts and professionals can take steps to reduce the climate impact caused by their hobby/profession.

I’m not sure what steps would be the most effective, but I think we can start with letting components work during their effective lifespan. There’s no need to replace something just because it’s not new, and if you do replace something, consider if maybe someone else can still use it so they don’t need to go and buy something new. For software engineers, optimizing your code makes sense. Not only will your customer be happy that the code is faster, but faster code probably also means that it took fewer CPU cycles (and thus less energy) to run.

In my previous post I mentioned that the default values in Linux don’t work well for me. Part is that I want an English speaking computer that uses Dutch formatting for most things. Another part is that I often switch between typing English or Dutch.

In English, i don’t often write accented letters (such as ë, ó, ì) but I very often write apostrophes in words like don't or can't or would'nt've'd or whatever.

In my experience, Linux has two options by defaut; you can either put accents on everything or on nothing. There’s no middle ground. This is frustrating, because with option 1 (accents on everything), I’ll have to add spaces to words where I’m not used to typing spaces. For example: to write don't, I’d have to type d o n ' <space> t. That’s a whole extra keystroke (gasp!) and also messes with my muscle memory from years of using Windows. If I didn’t include that space, I’d have typed donť which isn’t a letter in any language I type.

So let’s try the other approach instead; what if we disable accented letters? Then I can type all the contractions without issue because an accent like ' is entered as soon as I press the key. But now there’s a new problem: I can’t type accented letters easily.

Before, to type ë, I would type " e. The accent would stay floating while I type either a vowel, or another letter. If I type a vowel, it becomes accented, if I type a consonant, the accent becomes its own thing. (some exceptions to this exist, like ç). This is how I like it. Letters that I frequently accent become accented like I want, and other letters don’t. This is the way things should be.

But now with the dead keys disabled entirely, I can’t do that. To type an accented letter, I’d have to do some alt code nonsense. This extra sucks because I don’t have a num pad on my keyboard, and typing more than two numbers without a numpad is the work of psychopaths.

Fortunately, someone else ran into this exact problem too, and instead of just complaining about it (which is my specialty), they actually went and solved it for the rest of us.

Compose key

I was reminded by this comment that the compose key is also an option. I tried that but unfortunately it doesn’t quite fit my needs. However, I’d still like to mention it in case someone else finds this and it helps them out.

Making an en_NL locale for Linux

en_DK locale

Apparently, an en_DK locale was introduced in systemd 255 which contains almost everything I want. If you want a zero-maintenance solution, maybe this is more up your alley.

I’ve been playing off and on with Linux for years. I guess my first time trying it was somewhere in 2014, and that was probably Ubuntu.

It had a problem that made me stop using it.

I tried again years later, also with different distros such as Kali (I thought for a few days that i was a hacker or whatever), Ubuntu again, Mint, and Fedora.

They all had the same problem.

Then in early 2024 I decided I was going to switch from Windows to Fedora Workstation, and the problem was still there. But, I had promised myself that I would fix any issues I ran into instead of immediately giving up and going back to Micro$oft Window$™.

The problem: I want an English system, but I want Dutch formatting

Why? Because that’s what I’m used to from Windows. It makes sense since most of my work is with Dutch stuff, but I don’t want a Dutch computer. I want my OS to speak English.

So why isn’t the default English locale working for me? There are a few irritations:

There is no locale that does this. I’m mixing and matching from US English, UK English and Dutch.

The solution: Making my own locale

After a lot of searching, I realized that I’d never get things exactly how I wanted them by tweaking settings available in the UI. So, I would build my own locale. It’s not that hard right?
Indeed, it’s not.

I found this answer on the Unix Stack Exchange that explains things nicely. Using it, I made a new locale. Most items were taken directly from the en_US locale, except for some modifications and a few things taken from en_GB.

After all was said and done, I ended up with this en_NL file that I could then install on my system.

Installation is just a few simple commands:

sudo localectl set-locale en_NL.UTF-8
gsettings set org.gnome.system.local.region "en_NL.utf8"

Then I had to logout and log back in, and everything worked just how I wanted.

My stupid desire to add tracking to stuff

I’m not sure who this post is even for. I guess it’s mostly just a brain dump.

I have once again had to convince myself that it’s not worth the effort and privacy headaches to put tracking on this website. I don’t even know why I need convincing; I block tracking on every website I visit. Still, for some reason, I always feel this need to inject a little javascript, or route everything through a link shortener so that I can see how many people visit my site.

Of course, I ended up not doing it. I never end up doing it. and yet I keep thinking I should. Why is this?

I told myself I wouldn’t care how many people look at this website. And I strongly believe that it’s better for my mental health if I don’t. There are only two outcomes of knowing:

More people visit the site than I expected. This will make me feel all important and pressure me to write high-brow stuff or whatever.
Fewer people visit the site than I expect. This will make me lose all motivation to write, even though I’m just doing it for myself.

The decision not to install analytics was easy. Even if I did care about how many people visit my site (which I’ve convinced I don’t), I definitely don’t need to know their countries or browsers or screen size or user agent or whatever else those tools collect. I guess I could simply include a javascript that goes to a URL that increments a counter by 1 every time it’s hit, but that data is basically useless because it doesn’t count visitors, it counts page views.

Then there’s using a URL shortener to see how many people click on the outgoing links on my site. I thought it would be neat to know how many people clicked on the link for a project after reading about it on my site. But again, this kinda goes against my idea of minimizing tracking on the internet. Maybe if Shlink only counted hits and not extra data like country or user agent, but even then I’m just adding an extra redirect and I think an internet with fewer requests is a better place.

So in the end I have definitely decided¹ not to add any tracking to the site. No URL shorteners keeping track of who clicks my links, no analytics scripts, no hit counter. Just a stateless HTTP server sending files to a client.

Honestly this shouldn’t have been a decision to begin with. I strongly believe that the internet was made a worse place by the hyper-optimized analytics-driven approach of many sites. ↩︎

Shlink calls itself The definitive self-hosted URL shortener, and I must agree. I use it mostly because I’m interested in how often people access certain links, such as the profile link on my Mastodon profile, or a few links on Reddit wikis. In some cases it’s also useful to have a link I can change after the fact. For example, one of those links is l.vobar.eu/diabetesetiquette which is shared around a bunch, so if there is ever a new version, I can just change this one short link and everything will point to the new resource.

Pangolin is what I use as reverse proxy and tunneling for all my self-hosted stuff. It runs on a VPS and then connects to my different servers (the NAS , and another VPS) which actually run the applications. This setup has a few advantages for me:

A single point of entry for all my applications¹
Centralized certificate and authentication management
Application servers don’t need any open ports to be accessible
A simple WAF powered by CrowdSec to stop obvious attack attempts
GeoBlock plugin to block access from countries that don’t need access to my self-hosted applications ²

technically I have two points of entry, because there is a second Pangolin instance running on the NAS. This is useful for things hosted locally, so that I can access them even if my internet is down. Local DNS overrides point these domains to my local Pangolin instance for machines running at home. ↩︎
It’s not that I don’t trust people from given countries, but the self-hosted stuff is for myself and my family&friends. Blocking access from places where the target audience isn’t just reduces the attack surface should someone decide it’s worth hacking into my meme soundboard or whatever. ↩︎

Trying to move to European alternatives for tech

Over the past months, I’ve spent quite some time and effort migrating my whole digital presence away from US-based companies. I won’t go much into the reasons, but I’m sure you can imagine several yourself. Primarily, I just think it makes sense to support the economy in which I live, instead of one on the other side of the planet which is governed by politicians I can’t influence with my vote.

Moving away from US companies is a daunting prospect, and I’m far from done. However, I do think that I got a lot of important bits done. For some services, I wasn’t able to find a European alternative to my liking, in which case I did try to move away from big tech, and prefer a paid service to a free one.

If you’re looking for European alternatives for all kinds of software, I highly recommend european-alternatives.eu .

Email

Back in The Olden Days, I used Hotmail. Then I moved to outlook.com. Then I got an Android phone and moved over to Gmail. A few years ago I already moved to Fastmail, which offers features I like (email snoozing, custom domain, shared folders between users, scheduled send) that I haven’t been able to replicate with other email providers. So while Fastmail isn’t from Europe, I haven’t been able to switch yet.

Domain registrations

I used to use CloudFlare for my domain registrations. This is useful because I also used them for DNS , which made management a breeze.

This switch was probably the most cumbersome. Not only is transferring domains an annoying process of authorization codes, clicking on approval links, and waiting for anywhere between 1 minute and 1 week for everything to go through; I also want to optimize for cost, which quickly makes me have to consider a handful of providers because I have domains in five different TLDs. So, where OVH may be the cheapest for .eu, it isn’t for .space.

In the end, I settled on only partially moving to the EU for this. None of the European providers I looked at while doing this (June 2025) had affordable pricing for some of my domains, and I’m not about to double my domain renewal spend.

So, for my .eu domains (like the one you’re reading this blog on!) I picked OVH. I used them in the past for a VPS and wasn’t very happy with that, but for registration I figure I never need to actually use their portal or whatever after it’s setup. their prices are reasonable and management is okay.¹

For my other domains, I’m now with namecheap. They’re not from the EU, but they have by far the best pricing for the TLDs I use. I’ll have to check again in the future.

DNS

I’ve been using CloudFlare for years. I think my account was created somewhere in 2012 when I was running my own company and wanted to get that sweet sweet Railgun™ Optimized status. Ever since then, I have used it for hosting basically all my DNS zones. For one zone, I used FastMail, because I used their email and hosting so didn’t want to bother with managing records by myself.

In order to find the managed DNS service that I prefer, I tried a few: Hetzner, OVH, Bunny, and running my own bind server. I very quickly ditched the idea of running the server myself, because I don’t have any infrastructure in place to support a 24/7 DNS server and didn’t want to deal with the security implications of managing it myself. Next, I tried OVH since I had my domains there anyway. I quickly stopped that because their control panel is an absolute nightmare to use (It’s so slow!) Then I went to Hetzner, where I had a VPS so I had access to their DNS hosting (I don’t think they allow you to use it without having a paid service too). Their DNS service is a weird mix of advanced features like letting you edit the BIND file directly, while also missing some pretty standard features like DNSSEC. Finally I decided against them because I kept running into timeouts and weird unexpected errors while managing my zone there.

Finally, there is bunny.net , which I have now chosen to use. They are based in Slovenia, and support all the features I need — and then some! They let you manage records of all the types I know of, as well as do dynamic records based on the location of the person performing the request. They show you detailed statistics of performed queries, and there’s even some scripting stuff so you can get real crazy with dynamically doing DNS stuff.

I think Bunny is trying to compete with CloudFlare, so that’s nice.

Hosting

Okay, this one is Complicated™. What even is hosting? Is it sending some HTML and JS files to a browser? Is it running some server-side processing as well? Is it complicated file processing stuff? Is it all of the above? I decided to split this into a few different categories.

Static website hosting

This one is probably the easiest. You create a website that requires no server-side processing, and then put them somewhere that responds to HTTPS requests with that content. There’s millions (guessing) services that do this, for free or cheap. So here the challenge isn’t finding a service that does what I want, but one that does it easily and for a nice price.

In the past I used Fastmail for some of this as well, but their interface doesn’t let me manage it easily, and they recently implemented some pretty low bandwidth limits. Furthermore their entire HTTPS certificate flow breaks when you enable DNSSEC.² So, that’s a nice motivation to find a new specialized service.

So I had to come up with a list of requirements:

Hosted in the EU
Free or cheap
Support for Static Site Generators (SSGs)
- Bonus points if it can trigger a rebuild if I push changes to my git repository
HTTPS support ³

This seems like a nice concise list of requirements that many companies can meet. So, back to european-alternatives.eu I go to see what’s out there. Surprisingly, they only list two services: IONOS Deploy Now, and statichost . the IONOS one looks like one of many products of a cloud provider, which makes me feel (this is ungrounded probably) like they won’t place much focus on the product, they also charge $4 per month which I’m not (yet) ready to pay for hosting a few html files. So, I picked statichost, which sounds like they focus on just this product.

So far I’m using statichost for this website, as well as a few pages made with littlelink . The builds are snappy, and the logs are clear when something goes wrong. I’m happy with my choice and if I ever run into the free tier limits, I won’t have an issue paying for the extra bandwidth or build minutes, which seem priced fairly.

Hosting with some server-side processing

In this category are things like Immich , a Discord bot I run, a torrent client for reseeding images for my favourite Linux distributions, and a whole bunch of other things.

Here I actually have a small headstart. I’ve already been running a TrueNAS Scale box for years, and it supports running Docker containers. There are two reasons why I can’t just host everything on that:

I built it very much for storage, it doesn’t have a very fast processor or even fast storage, with only spinning disks.
I don’t want the entire internet connecting to my private IP for all my nonsense.

So, some applications that I really want to use locally, like Jellyfin, Immich, Nextcloud, and other file-access-related-stuffs can live on the NAS in my cupboard. And more “public” things like the Discord bot, a link shortener, a gist service, among many other things will need to move to the cloud.

In the past I’ve used services like Heroku and fly.dev for hosting container based workloads. And I guess they’re easy to use but it’s also a layer of abstraction over what could just be a docker-compose.yml. I also wanted to practice my server management skills so I decided to rent a VPS somewhere.

Here, I’ll be honest that my primary criterium for choosing a service was price. I don’t know enough about processors and memory and storage speed and whatever to make a good comparison based on specs. But I can compare prices! european-alternatives.eu has a lot of services in their VPS hosting category. After some comparison and talking to friends, I went for Hetzner. Definitely a budget choice in this market, and that’s just fine for all my non-critical workloads. I started with a single CAX11 server and have now added a CAX21 server for more stuff. Then, I’m using Pangolin to reverse proxy into the second node.

That brings us neatly into the final category for today:

Reverse proxy & HTTPS termination

In the past, I used Cloudflare. It’s easy to setup for simple https connections but I never managed to get their tunnel stuff setup. That means that anyone who knew my IP could just bypass cloudflare entirely. I don’t like that.

So, on one of my VPS’s at Hetzner, I installed Pangolin . It’s basically a reverse proxy that also manages Wireguard tunnels to other systems. So I put one (they call it Newt) on my NAS, and another on the second VPS. So now, all my services are routed through the hetzner VPS, and it talks to my private IP for local hosted services. This means that I can close ports 80 and 443 on my firewall, which is a very comfortable feeling.

To make sure I can still access my local services locally, even if the internet goes out, I installed a second Pangolin instance on my NAS, which only knows about the local stuff. And then in my router I setup some DNS overrides to make sure that local traffic always goes directly there, without having to touch the internet.

Conclusion

I hope that this post is useful for people considering moving to EU based providers. Or otherwise maybe it’s entertaining to read the ways in which I make decisions. I’ll be tinkering with this setup in the future, and am also planning on writing more detailed posts about specific services and setups over on my self hosted page .

OVH and Bunny don’t like cooperating when enabling DNSSEC for a domain. Namely, Bunny insists on only serving DNSKEY records when the request includes DNSSEC parameters, and OVH won’t add the required DS records until they can see the DNSKEY records in a request without do flag.⁴ I personally think that Bunny should also respond with DNSKEY records over plain connections but hey, that’s just me. ↩︎
I want to enable DNSSEC for all my domains. But Fastmail breaks down if you use them for file hosting (which I do) and want an https cert (which I also do). The way their certbot setup works makes it impossible to verify DNSSEC domains. ↩︎
Sure, I don’t have any secret content on my site or whatever, but also it’s trivially easy to setup certificates these days, so there’s no excuse. If a hosting service can’t do this for me, I don’t trust them to be very quick to release new features or patches. ↩︎
While writing this post, I decided to retry setting up DNSSEC for my domains at OVH again. This time, everything worked as expected. So, I guess either OVH started requesting DNSKEY records with the do flag set, or Bunny started including the details even if the flag isn’t set. ↩︎

TrueNAS

TrueNAS is probably the thing that kicked off my whole self-hosting adventure. It started as me just wanting to share some files with my husband without having to rely on Google Drive, but I quickly realised that it could also run other software. At first (when I was running TrueNAS Core), it was something to do with jails, which I don’t really understand.

Most of the software I ran at that time was using templates other people made. Updates were a pain every time. I also started using Home Assistant on this, and the way it was managing Python versions in the jail was an absolute pain.

After a while, they released TrueNAS Scale, which ditched the whole jails thing and introduced Docker (though only through some management UI of theirs). This let me start playing around with it more. Later, they also let you write your own docker-compose files, which is what I’m using now.

In the future, I’d love to get a separate application server so that my storage server (that only has spinning disks) can get back to being a storage server, but for now this is working fine.

Exporting all photos from Google Photos

This content is pretty outdated, and I can’t keep it up-to date because I’ve switched away from Windows. I think it should still work, but beware.

I want to move away from Google Photos, but I have a lot of photos in there. In this post, I’ll explain what I did to get a nice folder with all my pictures in it.

I used Powershell on Windows 10.

Step 0: Make a Google Photos export

To make an export of all the pictures in your Google Photos library, head over to Google Takeout and export them:

Go to Google Takeout and sign in
Deselect all services, then scroll down and select Google Photos
Wait for the export to be complete and then download it.

Step 1: Extract archives

Extract all the archives and merge the contents together

<downloadFoler> is the directory where the archives are located. For me, this was E:\Downloads
<targetFolder> is where you want the result. For me, this was E:\. The root of the archive contains a directory so the files ended up in E:\Takeout

Step 2: Apply metadata

Google provides the photo metadata (location, date) in a separate json file. I’d prefer to have everything inside the image file instead.

I got this command from legault.me

For this, I used exiftool. You can download it here if you don’t have it already.

First, move to the root directory of your Google Photos export. For me, this was E:\Takeout\Google Photos

You can remove the -progress argument to make it go faster, but I like seeing how far along it is.

I also manually set the file creation date to ensure it matches the capture date.

Step 3: Merge folders

Google duplicates all photos that are in an album by placing them both in a photos from <year> folder, as well as a folder with the album name. I want to use a different structure.

3.1: Everything in a single directory

<sourcePath> is the Google Photos directory in the takeout archive. For me, this was E:\Takeout\Google Photos
<targetPath> is the folder where you want to store everything. For me, this was E:\Takeout_merged

3.2: Directories per year and month

I like a directory structure where pictures are sorted by year and month. First, create a directory for every year, with folders for each month.

You could write a script for this, but I just did it manually.

Then, run the following script to put all the pictures in the correct folders.

Step 4: Delete metadata files

Now that all the metadata is back in its rightful place (i.e: the file itself), it’s time to delete the json files. Move to the root folder where all your images are (either the folder with everything in one place, or the one with sub directories. Both work)

You can choose to keep the metadata files in place. Some software (such as Photoprism) can use it.

Why there is no good way to dismantle encryption, and why it's a bad idea to begin with

Apparently , the EU is considering ways to somehow see encrypted data “without dictating technical solutions for providers and technology companies”. The reason they are considering this is apparently an attempt to prevent and combat child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Don’t get me wrong. If there is a way to reduce the amount of (child) sexual abuse and expoitation in the world, I would support it wholeheartedly. However, I don’t believe that breaking encryption helps achieve this goal.

Making encryption illegal (can you make math illegal?) won’t stop people who are already doing illegal things from using it. If a person sees no issue in sexually exploiting a child, I don’t see how they would be deterred from using encryption simply because it’s illegal.

A potential “solution” (I think encryption isn’t a problem so it doesn’t require a solution) people have offered in the past is the modification of encryption algorithms to include some sort of master key or other method with which law enforcement can access the encrypted data. I believe this approach is flawed in two ways; firstly it fundamentally breaks end-to-end encryption by introducing a third party to the transaction. On top of that, this assumes that all law enforcement agencies (assuming they would all have access, which they probably won’t) can be fully trusted all of the time.

Law enforcement can’t be implicitly trusted.

Deciding who would get access to a back-door in encryption is impossible.

Conclusion

I believe that sexual abuse and exploitation (whether it involves children or adults) is bad and we should take steps to fight it. However, breaking encryption will not solve this issue but will instead fundamentally break privacy and security.

Why every diabetic should switch to a closed-loop system

On Tuesday October 31st 2017, I flipped the switch (figuratively) to turn on my very own artificial pancreas system. Since then, I have improved my diabetes care beyond what I ever thought would be possible. All of this can be attributed to OpenAPS, and the amazing community behind it.

To fully understand this article, you will need a basic understanding of Diabetes (particularly type 1).

Before I begin listing off the many advantages of using a closed-loop system like OpenAPS, I would like to share the story of how and why I started using it.

I’m a member of a community of diabetics from all over the world. Some of my friends in this community were talking about their systems, and the hard time they were having finding compatible supplies for their rigs. After hearing their complaints I asked what they were missing; since I had a spare pump lying around and thought maybe it could help someone out.

As it turns out, that pump that had been collecting dust for the last four years was compatible with OpenAPS. I offered to send it to a friend, but he kindly refused my offer. At the time he argued that I would need it as a backup pump in case my current one stopped working, but now I know that he refused to take it because he wanted me to use it instead.

Even though I had a compatible pump, I put off setting up my own OpenAPS rig because I thought it required hardware that I did not have. The documentation at the time was confusing to me, and I was too convinced that it wouldn’t work to even try and figure it out. This went on for several months.

During the regular visit to my endocrinologist I mentioned to her that some people I know had automated their insulin delivery and adjustments, she responded with a huge smile on her face because one of her other patients had just done the same thing. While it was impossible for her to officially recommend OpenAPS to me (due to medical regulations), she did very strongly hint that she fully approved the system and would love for me to try it out.

And so I did.

After getting home I immediately contacted my friends that were already using it, asking for help setting everything up. It turns out that I actually had all the supplies required to set up a basic rig without spending a dime.

The biggest advantage that OpenAPS has to offer in my opinion is its incredible ability to reduce high blood glucose values (BG’s), while simultaneously virtually wiping lows from the table. Even though it is possible to reduce highs and prevent lows without automation, it takes a lot of work and careful planning; not to mention the huge amount of time you need to invest to monitor your BG, calculate possible adjustments, and then carry out these adjustments. It’s simply unrealistic to expect any human to react to changes in their BG every five minutes like OpenAPS does.

In addition to always being on top of my BG like I could never be, OpenAPS is much better at calculating and admitting precise corrections. While I could theoretically achieve the same level of precision, this would require me to carry a calculator; as well as tediously navigating my way through the temporary basal menu every time my sensor gives me a new value.

Another thing OpenAPS does very well is predicting the effect of past treatments before adjusting its insulin dose recommendations. Where I would simply look at my current BG and go from there, OpenAPS considers how much insulin is still active in my system as well as the trend of my BG (i.e. is it going up or down? and how much?) before doing anything. Sometimes, this behavior makes it look like nothing is happening because it is reducing my basal rate even though my BG is too high. However — looking at the prediction graph — you can see that it expects my values to drop by themselves based on the insulin that is still active in my body.

Even though OpenAPS is designed with security at its core, you can tell it to get on with it and hurry up when you’re done with that high value you’ve been trying to correct for the past two hours. I can tell it to deviate from my regular target (instead aiming for a lower BG), and administer small boluses (called SMB, or supermicrobolus), to get me plummeting down to reasonable levels. The first few times you do this, it’s very scary to see how fast it can make your values drop. However, the system will still operate with the same security considerations it always does. I have never dropped below the configured target while doing this. The ability to do this is locked away by default, and should only be enabled after fully understanding the danger of letting your rig give you so much insulin without manual review. Where the default basal adjustment mode can give me up to 2.4 units per hour, SMB can easily go up to 6 units per hour in my case.

A great advantage of using OpenAPS is its ability to correct very messy situations. I can go to bed with a too high BG after eating two large servings of pasta, and sleep easy — knowing that I will wake up in-range the next morning. This was virtually impossible before using OpenAPS because I would either have to sacrifice my sleep (hence, eliminating the ‘sleep easy’ part of my statement) to check and correct my value during the night, or ignore the values and instead wake up feeling bad from the high BG.

Many people are hesitant about using OpenAPS at night — because you are literally trusting your unconscious body to a machine — and I was too when I first started using it. However, OpenAPS is filled to the brim with safety checks, precautions, and limits, to reduce the risk of giving too much insulin. The OpenAPS Reference Design explains all the safety considerations that are part of OpenAPS. By default, the system runs oref0 (OpenAPS Reference Design Zero). Oref0 can only issue temporary basals below a defined limit. This limit is defined as the lowest value of:

The pump’s max basal rate
3x the maximum daily scheduled basal rate
4x the current scheduled basal rate

Furthermore, it will turn off basal delivery after the user has given themselves a bolus and wait for enough data before issuing a new temporary basal command, to avoid interfering with the user input.

If only adjusting temporary basal rates is not enough, it is possible to enable oref1. Oref1 can deliver boluses, which makes it a very risky but extremely powerful addition to OpenAPS. Fortunately, oref1 contains several additional safety checks to ensure you never get too much insulin. It always checks the pump status before and after calculating the required dose to ensure no insulin was given during this time, and sets a temporary basal of 0 for the duration required to offset the just delivered insulin. So, even if the rig suddenly loses connection to the pump, the user is never in danger of dropping too low.

Now that I have explained how OpenAPS works (and why I think it’s awesome), I’m sure you are interested in actual results — cold hard facts, if you like — from my 6 months of using OpenAPS.

Before I started using OpenAPS, my A1c was 6.8%. This was the lowest value I had ever reached, and it took a lot of hard work and sacrifice. I worked out 3–4 times per week, restricted my carb intake drastically (especially for my dinners), and obsessively checked my sensor data. Even though this result was definitely good, I was exhausted. I know for a fact that I cannot keep that up forever.

After using OpenAPS for 4 months, I got my A1c tested again. The result was 6.3%. The next two A1c results were both 5.7. This might not seem like a drastic improvement, but you haven’t heard what I did to achieve this; I did everything I should not do. I didn’t go to the gym as much, I stopped eating low-carb, and I had fast food quite regularly.

On top of a reduced A1c, I spent more time in range, and had a more stable line all around.

Using all the methods explained above, OpenAPS can give me what I love most about it: peace of mind. It doesn’t matter how high my values are, what crazy things I ate just before bed, or that I am suddenly less sensitive to insulin because of a cold. I never have to worry about my values, because I know that OpenAPS is looking out for me. always.
