I have been blessed to grow up in Hocking Hills, Ohio, a place where millions visit each year to witness its sandstone wonders carved by water erosion and the breathtaking deciduous forest that transforms into a patchwork quilt of red, orange, and gold each October. Though opportunities for work and healthcare are limited here, I am proud to call it home. What many see as a retreat has been the very place that shaped me into someone known for being big-hearted, determined, hardworking, and yes—stubborn. (And let’s not forget the resting face that says it all.) It was here that I endured and overcame struggles with trauma and addiction. I broke those cycles and was given countless chances to serve my community as a good neighbor. It was also here that I learned an important truth: there is beauty under the dust.
