I know this blog isn't about music but today is way to big of a event to not post something! Today fifty-three years ago was
The Day The Music Died. No I am NOT talking about the anniversary of the release of Don Mclean's song American Pie, I'm talking about the real day the music died. When three of the greatest rock and roll singers of 50's era died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. Buddy Holly, J.P "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and Ritchie Valens were all on tour for the big "The Winter Dance Party" which was a tour that covered twenty-four states in Midwestern cities in just three weeks. It was cold and snowy and the tour bus was half broken and on it's last leg. Buddy Holly deiced to charter a plan to the next tour stop instead of withstanding the cold 380 miles to Moorhead, Minnesota. Originally Buddy Holly's band mates, Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup, had planned on flying with him but both were approached and asked for their seat in the plan. J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) first asked Jennings for his seat, since he'd developed a case of the flu. Then Ritchie Valens asked Tommy Allsup for his seat, Tommy said he'd flip a coin for his spot...... what an awful way to decide who'd get on the doomed plane! Of course they didn't know that then. Well you know the rest of the story, plane takes off, plane crashes, and the death of the three of the greatest rock and roll pioneers (plus the pilot) died that day on February 3rd, 1959. Still to this day their legend and music lives on, and that's the way it will always be. So next time your hear one of their songs on the radio stop and think about
