Most of the Army and Marine Corps’ vehicles are not ready for combat, watchdog finds
The amount of maintenance done on ground vehicles over the last decade has steadily declined, the Government Accountability Office found.
The GAO’s investigation found that the decline — looking at data from 2015 to 2024 — often stemmed from a lack of available materiel and parts, as well a decline in the number of available maintainers.
In one comparison, the GAO found that the number of vehicle overhauls done by Army maintenance depots dropped from 1,278 in the 2015 fiscal year to 12 in the 2024 one. For the Marine Corps, the number dropped from 725 to 163 during that time period.
One common factor across both services is a lack of parts for fixing and overhauling these ground vehicles. Additionally, the report noted that in many cases the shortage prompted the Army to source parts from older vehicles that were no longer in use in order to make repairs.
Alongside the physical parts shortage, the GAO found that sustainment suffered from a limited number of skilled maintainers and technicians versed on repairs. Even if there were those maintainers available, the Army and Marine Corps often lack up-to-date technical drawings.

The United States' total fertility rate fell to a record low in 2024, dipping below 1.6 children per woman, according to new federal data released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Previous research has indicated that religiousness may moderate the negative effect of intelligence on fertility which is found in modern populations. In line with prior research, we found that, net of controls, intelligence predicted lower fertility, β =-0.06 (p = .003), and religiousness predicted higher fertility β = 0.21 (p < .001). According to the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) State of World Population Report, India's population has reached 1.46 billion in 2025; however, the total fertility rate (TFR) in India has fallen to 1.9. This is below the replacement level, which is needed to maintain a stable population across generations.

According to the National Family Health Survey of 2019–21, the TFR was recorded at 2.0, which is below the replacement level. A replacement level of 2.1 is required for a country to maintain its population. The report says, "This is the real crisis, not underpopulation or overpopulation. The answer lies in greater reproductive agency, a person's ability to make free and informed choices about sex, contraception and starting a family."

Japan's child population falls for 44th straight yr to new record
The number of children under 15, including foreign residents, was 13.66 million as of April 1, down 350,000 from a year ago, according to data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications before the national Children's Day holiday on Monday.

The ratio of children to the overall population fell 0.2 percentage point to 11.1 percent, also the lowest since comparable data became available in 1950.

According to U.N. data, although the date of the survey differs, Japan has the second lowest ratio of children among 37 nations with a population of at least 40 million, only behind South Korea at 10.6 percent.

By gender, there were 6.99 million boys and 6.66 million girls.

By age, 3.14 million children were 12 to 14, compared with 2.22 million in the 0 to 2 age group, indicating a continuing trend of fewer children being born.

Japan's child population has been falling continuously since 1982, having peaked in 1954 at 29.89 million, with a second baby boom observed between 1971 and 1974.

Officials forecast a 41% increase in egg prices this year in what some are calling “eggflation”. Where eggs are available, consumers are often limited in the number they can purchase at a time. Breakfast chains from Waffle House to Denny’s have added a surcharge of $0.50 for each egg served up.

The situation is driving some people to new places to source their eggs: over the southern border. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has intercepted an increasing number of eggs from Mexico, where a carton of a dozen costs about $2. For comparison, the cost in many parts of California is just under $10 per dozen, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

Importing raw or fresh eggs into the US from Mexico is prohibited due to concerns about diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza – also known as bird flu – and another highly contagious avian illness called virulent Newcastle disease, said Roger Maier, a public affairs specialist with CBP.

Once confiscated, the eggs are destroyed by officials in oven-sized incinerators. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $10,000.

Paris, once a beacon of culture and European sophistication, has become an epitome of France’s failed migration policy. The case of the Gaîté Lyrique Theater, occupied for nearly three months by hundreds of immigrants, is one of the most salient examples of this situation, now almost at a point of no return. What began as an act of solidarity has turned into a dead-end scenario where violence, disorder, and economic ruin define the fate of this historic establishment.
On December 10 last year, around 250 immigrants, supported by pro-immigration organizations, forcefully took over the Gaîté Lyrique Theater. What was initially presented as the voluntary providing of humanitarian refuge quickly turned into an illegal occupation that completely paralyzed the venue’s operations. Loyal to a progressive ideological line, the theater’s management decided not to evict the occupants. However, the situation soon became unsustainable: scheduled events were canceled, economic losses reached hundreds of thousands of euros, and the venue’s security was severely compromised.
Over the months, the number of occupants has grown to 446, many of whom have been identified as adults despite claiming to be ”unaccompanied minors.”

On February 26th, the theater’s administration announced that it could no longer guarantee the building’s management, maintenance, or operation. In a desperate plea for help, management reported worsening violence inside the theater and declared that the establishment is in serious and imminent danger.” As a result, employees invoked their right to withdraw, leaving the venue without any operational management.
The case of Gaîté Lyrique Theater is not unique. Similar incidents are happening in many other European cities, including in Barcelona and Berlin, where cultural venues have been occupied by migrants.

“The government has abandoned cities in handling this crisis,” Léa Filoche, deputy to Socialist Anne Hidalgo in the Paris mayor’s office complained. But accusing the government of inaction is hypocritical. Anne Hidalgo’s Socialist administration of Paris has demonstrated complete ineffectiveness in managing this crisis. Instead of seeking realistic solutions, they have chosen to evade responsibility and blame the state for its “lack of interest” in the immigrants’ situation.

What the leadership of Paris, and those of many other Western European cities, are unwilling to confront is the root cause of the problem: a failed immigration policy driven by an idealistic approach to mass migration that ignores its real consequences on large European cities.
