ACT UP — the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power — is a diverse, non-partisan group of individuals, united in anger and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis. We meet with government officials, we distribute the latest medical information, we protest and demonstrate. We are not silent.
ACT UP was formed in response to social neglect, government negligence and the complacency of the medical establishment during the 1980s. Soon it found itself needing to fight corporate greed, lack of solidarity and various forms of stigma and discrimination at home and abroad.
While ACT UP has an incredible history, HIV/AIDS is not history. HIV/AIDS is very much with us. And we call on you to join our fight to end AIDS.
The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) is a diverse, nonpartisan group of individuals, united in anger, and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis. This means we focus on HIV/AIDS and closely-related issues. Many of our members are also involved in other types of activism or activist groups, but ACT UP recognizes the importance of staying focused on HIV/AIDS until there is no longer an epidemic.
No. We’ve always been a 100% volunteer-run organization with no paid employees or interns. If you’d like to volunteer, please start by attending meetings. We have no mechanisms to match individuals with volunteer opportunities. Attend meetings and get involved when you or someone else brings together an initiative that you want to take part in. If you have questions, contact new.member@actupny.com.
For privacy reasons, we generally don’t put strangers in touch with specific ACT UP members. We also maintain no membership list.
No. As a nonpartisan group, we endorse policy positions only, never candidates or parties.
Because of privacy concerns and the sometimes sensitive nature of HIV activism, we ask that journalists disclose their names, publications, and purposes for reporting on the meeting before we begin our agenda. The floor will then debate and vote on whether and which agenda items the journalist can be present for. It is unlikely that you will be able to record or video a meeting.
If you’re a student in grades K-12 and this is for a school project, the answer is yes.
If you’re planning to sell merchandise with our imagery on it, or use our imagery to advertise a product, the answer is no.
All others should fill out our Image Use Permission Request form. Please be patient; it may take up to two weeks for us to respond.
