an Agile Data Guide to Information Product Canvas: Capturing data and information requirements in a repeatable way so stakeholders love them and data teams can build from them (Agile Data Guides)
Purchase options and add-ons
Are you tired of spending valuable time documenting data requirements, only to hear "that's not what I wanted"?
Do you feel like a "data order taker" instead of a trusted partner who helps drive meaningful organisational outcomes?
Is your data team struggling because stakeholders speak a "very different language" when it comes to their data needs?
Are traditional requirements gathering methods leaving you with ambiguous needs, leading to wasted effort and projects that underdeliver?
If you answered yes to any of these, then An Agile Data Guide To Information Product Canvas is for you. This isn't just another tech or methodology heavy book, it's the beginning of your journey into a set of proven patterns and pattern templates designed to change how you gather data requirements and deliver organisational value.
Created by Shane Gibson, Agile Data Coach and author of the Agile Data Guides, drawing inspiration from the proven Agile Data Way of Working, this guide introduces the Information Product Canvas. It's a simple, clear, and concise pattern template specifically designed to quickly discover and capture data and information requirements in a repeatable way.
Imagine capturing requirements in just 30 minutes using a shared language that everyone understands, regardless of their role or technical fluency. This guide shows you how to use the Information Product Canvas to visually collaborate with stakeholders, validating requirements as they are captured and ensuring that what will and won’t be included is clearly defined to set scope boundaries.
By focusing on capturing both the what and the why, connecting data work directly to the Actions and Outcomes stakeholders want to achieve, you will ensure every piece of your data work is tied to a clear and measurable organisational benefit.
This approach helps you avoid building things no one uses and ensures your Information Products, carefully prepared 'products' like dashboards, reports, datasets, or APIs that deliver the right information to the right people, valuable outcomes like reducing churn or increasing revenue.
This guide is essential for Business Analysts, Product Managers, Data Analysts, Data Engineers, Data Leaders, Agile Coaches, and Stakeholders. It provides actionable methods to:
- Capture stakeholder needs and data requirements clearly, concisely, and in a way that receives instant feedback;
- Empower data teams with everything they need to build, without drowning them in unnecessary detail;
- Help stakeholders prioritise what’s important by making requirements understandable at a glance;
- Reduce rework and minimise back-and-forth between data teams and stakeholders;
- Ensure faster delivery of valuable Information Products;
- Become a "data to business translator" in your organisation;
- Create trust within your stakeholders by consistently identifying what’s important.
Shane Gibson, with over 35 years in the data domain and 10 years coaching data teams, shares his expertise and experience in this guide, helping you adopt new ways of working patterns so your teams can deliver value earlier and have fun while delivering it.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is truly a book which can help any organization in getting control of the delivery of Information Products! In a clear tone and with tons of examples, Shane Gibson explains all the steps how to interact with the business side of the organization and use the canvas as a clear way of communication and refine the delivery. This makes it possible to bring the need of the stakeholders and what is asked for closer together.
Personally I really like that you not only describe what the information product will do, but also what it won't do! This is a great example of Shane's thinking.
I personally can't wait to introduce the Information Product Canvas with my customers and combine this with my own WoW.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt is harder to start from a blank slate than to follow a well-designed framework, especially when tackling complex data projects. This book provides the guide to increase the odds of success, or identify projects early that are not worth solving. The Information Product Canvas serves as that blueprint to break down overwhelming data possibilities into manageable, strategic decisions.
The author, Shane Gibson, shows a deep understanding of the space, clearly drawing from extensive experience in navigating the challenges of information products. What sets this book apart is its visual approach, which grounds the conversation between business leaders and technical colleagues who can often talk past each other. These visuals bridge the communication gap that often derails promising initiatives.
For anyone who has struggled with getting data projects from concept to completion, this book provides the structured approach needed to move beyond analysis paralysis. I highly recommend this for data professionals, product managers, and executives looking to maximize the value of their information investments while minimizing wasted efforts.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe information product canvas is a great way to capture data requirements with a bit of structure, and this book is a great reference for it. It's so well laid out - must have taken a lot of effort to get it right! That attention to detail really comes through.
The examples are great and really add colour to the theory.
I look forward to using this to better capture data requirements!

Attila CeglediReviewed in Australia on May 18, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Well laid out, informative, concise and relevant.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI have worked with the product canvas for some time now but decided to buy this book as an easy carry around reference guide. It is very well laid out and with the colour coded sections very easy to find the references you are looking for. It concise. No superfluous waffle just to pad out the contents and make the book better. It is to the point and covers the background, the canvas; gives examples and helps you navigate common questions and guides you on your next steps. Highly recommended whether you are a frequent user of the IPC or just want to learn more before becoming hooked.
Carl HunterReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 20, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Great approach to gathering data requirements in an agile first fashion. A must read.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat book! Shane has a knack of explaining how things work in an accessible and open way. The approach of using a canvas is not a new thing, however, applying it to analytics discovery projects is a stroke of genius. I've been in the data and analytics game for years and requirements gathering is always a sticky thorn. Usually you get it right, but sometimes you don't, and the client feels misheard. Using the approaches outlined in Shane's book helps focus the conversation, reduce the scope creep before it can happen, and turns a potentially long winded meeting into a timebox of pure effort. If you struggle to get the requirements from the client, then, give this approach a go - the old dog can learn new tricks :)
May-lyn HuReviewed in Australia on May 21, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Understands, empathises and gives you solutions.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is THE book for data professionals - any person who has worked in data - you need to read this.
Not only will it empathise with struggles you’ve had with dealing with requirements- it gives you solutions and tools on how to manage and deal with challenges you will face. If I could give it more than 5 stars - I would!
Sarah PrattReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Product Canvas driving easy conversations
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLoved how easily digestible the content within this is. I was able to read and take notes in just a few hours, and already have put into practice in a session with stakeholders this week! I was so impressed with how easy it drove the conversation and got them thinking of what their true needs are, in a way that can allow the data team to work on what is best for the how. Looking forward to using more!
