12:32 pm - To Native Americans and Their Friends... The fires here in Southern California dominated media both locally and as far away as South Africa. Everyone knows how many people evacuated, how many million dollar homes were lost, how many gallons of phoscheck foam a DC10 can lay down. One thing that seemed to get overlooked was the impact to indigenous peoples on the many reservations in and around San Diego and the Inland Empire. Red Cross, Salvation Army and several private organisations are rushing in to serve the general populace, but no one thinks about these people who live their own lives, with their own history, governance and support.
Someone dear to me lost a huge piece of their history last week, homes that belonged to generations of their family, community buildings and a church. This person would never make a public appeal, so I am. I'm asking my flist who are proud of their heritage, or any of their friends and family, to make a donation, big or small to the Yuina, Rincon, La Jolla, San Pasqua, Pala, Capitan Grande, Mesa Grande, Santa Ysabel, Barona, Jamul or Inaja-Cosmit reservations. If you can't give money or materials, give prayers. All will be appreciated.

06:19 pm - Lather, Rinse, Repeat, Lather, Rinse... I guess those Supercuts adverts are regional. Chap goes to the 'other guys' and asks if they're just like Supercuts. Robotscissorhands manacles him to the chair and intones 'How 'bout a nice number two'. And the fun continues...
As for me, although I'm far too...ah...seasoned for the Lucius Malfoy look, my hair is still long and getting longer, so, Courtney, you may get your wish.
You're right, Laurie, about Young Frankenstein, and I knew it but I had that filed in the Gene Wilder folder, which is a subset of the Mel Brooks File. Still one of my all time favourite films. 'I suggest you put on a tie' and 'he...vas...my...BOYFRIEND!' are part of the family idiom.
Jos, I LOVED the Dresden File books. Thought the programme displaced vacuously.
Jay, saw this and thought you might appreciate it: http://climate.weather.com/video/?ref=93b7f6a1b26f261bca4814c3e4ed447c1fd09e53
Linda, thank you for the offer, but the loss of Billie Piper was the end of the Doctor for me. I stop at Series Two.
Yja, thank you for posting the pup pics. Brilliant.
And Michele...what they said.

07:16 pm - Thank You, Thank You Been a busy few weeks, highs and lows, fast and slows, but I have such a full heart, I have to pause right now and put this down.
Firstly, there have been opportunities to feel good this year I've not had for a while. Little things like stuffing money in those red kettles, watching the faces of kids sitting on Father Christmas' knee, getting snowed on after fireworks at Disneyland. Big deals like holding a friend's hand through a crisis, making someone's wish come true, feeling cared for and about.
Secondly, there has been renewed hope, painful processes that have brought about change, that terrifying, dizzying emotional whoosh of being caught up in a tornado of events that lands you (sometimes with a thump) in a place you didn't expect to be, but a place that just might be good for you.
Thirdly...well, thirdly...
Michele, I haven't received it yet, but I'm excited in that hoppy, bouncy way because I know it's coming, because there are stories to be told within it, so thank you to you and all the clan.
Laurie, thank you once again for the bikkies. And for the cool card. And for the chance to play Father Christmas.
Yja, I'm trying to be a good boy and not open it because it came wrapped up so pretty and looks nice under the tree, but I'll probably break down and open it anyway...but even before my appalling lack of self control gets the better of me, thank you for thinking of me.
Jay (and June!)thank you for the goodies. A high point in every Christmas season. And thank you for the dreamcatcher. I'm wearing it, right along with Robert's Crucifix. Seems very appropriate.
Ann, thank you for all that bunny goodness. What a surprise. When I got the package I had no idea who could have sent it. Your note was buried at the bottom of the box. The artwork was beautiful, the soap was one of those tickles of amusement, and the calendar is already at work on my desk.
Kim, thank you for the pictures of Keegan and his bear. He is adorable (Keegan, not the bear...well, the bear is cute, that's why we sent him, but Keegan...oh, you know what I mean, you're his Nana) and you are justified in your pride.
Avril, it was wonderful hearing from you again! Thank you.
Arturo, via con Dios, amigo. It was a wild ride, now drive safe.
Ed, thank you for the contraband. Even though I don't smoke any more, and rarely drink, it doesn't take away the pleasure of your extraordinary kindness, now will it stop me from savouring the scent of really fine tobacco now and again.
And Sean...all I can say is...wow. No...WOW. WOWOWOWOWOWOW. And I'm going to share...

If I've left anyone out, I apologise, but I'm very full hearted right now and it tends to keep from blood pumping proper to the brain. I'll get back to you.
Happy Christmas!
UPDATEUPDATEUPDATE Michele! They're here, they're here! Thank you. As an aside, thank you for the card on your LJ. Our Ann has been sending me Jacquie Lawson cards for a while, and every one's a treasure.

09:28 pm - Christmassy Memey Goodness Stolen from Laurie and Michele who stole it from Chad who stole it from...
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Bucking the consensus...hot chocolate. I'm just not a noggy sort.
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Well, he used to wrap, but lately he's been putting things in hand decorated paper bags, and filling them with confetti...Santa thinks he's so clever.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or clear? This year they're all red and white.
4. Do you hang mistletoe? Nope. Pets. Wait...we don't hang pets...we don't hang mistletoe BECAUSE of the pets. Tell PETA to back off.
5. When do you put your decorations up? Week of Thanksgiving for the outside stuff. We hire a service. Inside...my wife used to do it and turned the place into a sort of Rudolph-chewed-on-tinsel-and-threw-up-in-here wonderland. Now it's whenever anyone has the time. This year we still put up five trees inside, so someone had time on their hands.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish? We used to get meat pasties on Christmas Eve...hot and kind of crispy...you never got those any other time of year. And chestnuts... These days, I think it's hot sugar cookies (the kind with the picture in the centre) while watching some fun vid.
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child: I think the first year I got an actual real toy from Father Christmas. My grandparents didn't believe in toys, so Christmas was very practical...new trousers for school, a new pair of shoes...that kind of thing. I'm sure I got toys when I was about two, but I don't remember those. First real toy I got that I recall was a tool kit (you remember; hammer, saw, spanner...all in miniature). I went around 'fixing' things for weeks. I think my step mother took it away from me after I 'fixed' the bannister down to the kitchen and someone nearly took a tumble when it came away from the wall.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? The truth? What truth? What? Is he gay? You know...I always wondered about those 'elves'....
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? I open gifts all over the holiday. I open some Christmas Eve with TC's lady and her kids. Christmas morning with everyone. Christmas evening with Jaxon. Whenever Susan's off work. Four am online with my step parents and my son.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?: Snow? I live in Los Angeles now. I barely remember it.
12. Can you ice skate? I used to. Skates are like skis for me...not a good idea.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? Oh, gosh...favourite gift...you know, it isn't the gift, it's the giver. Little gestures. Small things that were selected with love and care. It's heartwarming when you open a little package and you know just what the giver was thinking when they saw that gift. The best gift is always to find someone thought of me.
14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Aside from the Spiritual aspect of it? What it does to people. There's a transformation. It doesn't happen so much in recent years. We've gotten too politically correct. But I remember when Christmas meant a softening of hearts, a widening of smiles, a swelling of hope. Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men actually existed for a few days. I love it when a song comes on, or an old vid, or a card comes in the mail, and it makes your eyes sting a little, makes your chest ache in that good way.
15. What is your favorite Holiday dessert? I'm sure I'm going to lose my UK citizenship for this, but I don't like plum pudding. I'm a choccy cake guy. Or bikkies. Shortbreads, sugar cookies, chocolate brownies (Hi! June).
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Advent gifts. The planning, the buying, the wrapping, the shipping, the anticipation of fun for the recipients. The five minutes of being five years old. Christmas zen. Laurie, sprinkles will make even Swiss Miss magic at Christmas.
17. What tops your tree? Depends on the tree. The outside trees all have stars this year. The three in the living room are that sort of rustic look...no toppers. The one in the dining room (the 'big' tree) has a silver dove. The one in my room (my Advent/Clan tree) has a stuffed bunny, of course.
18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? The anticipation of giving, when you're buying/making that perfect gift, and waiting to give it. <-- Couldn't put it better myself, Laurie.
19. What is ur favorite Christmas Song? Oh, gosh...where to begin...Well, obviously, Ave Maria, O Holy Night, Angus Dei, Panis Angelicus, Ode to Joy...And there are some arrangements I like, Stacie Orrico's O Come All Ye Faithful, for example, and NO ONE sings The Christmas Song like Nat King Cole. I like Cradle in Bethleham by Beautiful Mistake, This Christmas by Toby Mac, Destiny's Child's version of Carol of the Bells (I like TSO's version, but then, I like anything by TSO), Building 429's We Three Kings, Big Daddy Weave's Go Tell it On the Mountain...yeah, I could go on and on and on and....
This was fun. Thank you.

07:29 am - Wish List Since everyone else is making wish lists, thought I'd toss mine out and all...
1. Teach an adult to read. 2. Rescue a rabbit, a dog, or a cat. (and post its picture) 3. Pray for world leaders. 4. Adopt a needy family for Christmas. 5. Learn ASL and talk to people who don't get heard very often. 6. Walk somewhere if it's at all possible. It's good for everyone. 7. Make peace with someone. 8. Send out holiday cards, or ecards, or phone/email/text people and put a little sparkle in their day. 9. Have some Christmas zen. Take ten minutes with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to some music of the season. The hot chocolate MUST have sprinkles.
And for my best guy...
10. Some M/Sk or M/K fic where Mulder's a total bottom. Spanking a plus.

09:00 pm - Tea and Whimsy I'm sitting out in the garden, with a pot of tea and my pride of garden lions. I had planned this for yesterday but it didn't work out...I was overtaken by rolls of Christmas wrap and tied up in curling ribbon, my cries for help silenced by cello tape.
Well, that was yesterday. Today, I'm enjoying some Saskatoonberry tea I got for my birthday, and some wonderful classical guitar and flute music someone gave me for no apparent reason than the desire to share the pure joy of inspiration and talent. And I have word HAL (my supersized laptop) is on his way back to me. Life's pretty good.
Michele, the tea is not as sweet as comes in the cachets, but the flavour of the berry itself is stronger. Makes a nice pot of tea. Thank you.
Nonny, I need your new mailing address, please.
Ann, the coffee was a real treat. I had it again last night, coming in from a long day out, and it filled the whole kitchen with a lovely 'there, there, coffee will make everything better' aroma.
Jay, your birthday/Christmas gifts/new pup treats will be Friday. Thank God June wasn't hurt. TC's cousin hit a deer two years ago and is still suffering back and neck pain. Didn't do the deer much good either.
And now...a little Christmassy...er....treat? Something to do when you're bored:
