First, thank you so much for creating something for me. I know that whatever you make I will love!

Some general likes/DNWs:

Overall, things that I love:
+ Snark and banter
+ Angst with a happy ending
+ Slow and realistic building of relationships
+ Addressing relationship challenges realistically
+ tropes like fake dating, trapped and have to work together, there was only one bed!

Do not want:
+ Embarrassment or humiliation kink
+ gratuitous violence and gore (canon-typical violence is just fine)
+ Bestiality, vore, scat, golden showers, etc.
+ Omegaverse
+ BDSM-verse

+ Pregnancy/childbirth/babies

+ Rape/noncon

+ Noncanon sex/gender changes

If you’re moved, I do enjoy explicit fic. What I’ve written will give you a good sense of what I like to read.

Mysterious Lotus Casebook: I fell hard for this series last year. I love all three of the main characters and their growth and character arcs. If you decide to pair any two of them, it’s very important to me you don’t bash or ignore the third. I do love poly relationships, so if you’re moved to put all three together, that’s great. If shipping isn’t your thing, then gen is also fine—slice of life, case fic, missing scenes, whatever. As I said in my sign-up, I would love either to have Li Lianhua, Di Feisheng, and Fang Duobing in any combination, but particularly the three of them all together in a relationship--platonic, romantic, or a secret third thing.

I love Di Feisheng/Fang Duobing and there is not nearly enough of that in this fandom. If you’d like to go in this direction, some scenarios could be the two of them sharing a bed, or learning to get along, or the amnesia arc; post-canon either when Li Lianhua is really dead or when they're looking for him, or after they find him. Basically, these two idiots figuring out their shit together.

The rarepair of my dreams at the moment is Qiao Wanmian/Fang Duobing. I’d be very happy to see the two of them either coming together or in an established relationship. It could be the two of them grieving Li Lianhua, could be the two of them having a smutty good time, but preferably something where she is the leader/initiator/in charge.

Sha Hai/Tomb of the Sea:
Huo Xiuxiu, Wang Pangzi -- Just give me these two bantering and clearly friends, and I will be happy. If you want to go further and ship them, I’m also all for it. In terms of scenarios, I think that they would have a lot of fun being snarky shit stirrers together! Maybe a missing scene where they team up and Pangzi is sneaking in somewhere while Xiuxiu is the (extremely competent) distraction-- or vice versa! The two of them running from the Wang? Road tripping to Tibet?

Mrs. Pollifax:
The Mrs. Pollifax series is delightful and the first 3-4 books are my favorites. I'm interested here in gen character studies--Mrs. Pollifax is so quirky and interesting, I'd love to see her trying to integrate her new spy life with her old one, while compartmentalizing like a champ. How does being a spy change her? How does knowing her change Carstairs or Bishop? For example, what's happening between Carstairs and Bishop when Mrs. Pollifax goes missing--is there tension, are they trying to care for one another, or are each of them trying to leave the stress at work when they go home?

Hey there, friend!

First, thank you so much for creating something  for me. I know that whatever you make I will love--I'm so excited to be part of an exchange in these fandoms! I will note that my prompts are probably more geared towards fic, since that's what I write and am familiar with, but anything is great.

Some general likes/DNWs:

Overall, things that I love:
+ Snark and banter
+ Angst with a happy ending
+ Slow and realistic building of relationships
+ Addressing relationship challenges realistically

Overall dislikes and things I really don't want to see:

1. Reunion: The Sound of the Providence

As I said in my sign-up, I have fallen down the rabbit hole with this show, and fallen hard. I love characters that are middle-aged, that have lived for a while and are both comfortable with their lives, choices, and characters, but also are grappling with new situations in bodies that are older, that may be world-weary and a bit more cynical. The shine has worn of Wu Xie and Wang Pangzi, and that is one of the reasons I love them .

As I said, I see Wu Xie and Pangzi as platonic life partners, and Wu Xie/XiaoGe as having a romantic but complicated relationship. I'd love to see those two dynamics played out, either in missing scenes during Reboot or post-series. I'm very happy with smut, but also perfectly happy with gen if that's what you're more comfortable with. I'm not familiar with the rest of the DMBJ universe and haven't read the books, so no need to worry about backstory beyond what Reboot provides.

As I also noted, I love Liu Sang, who's like a feral cat who showed up and wants to be friends and is terrible at it. Again, if you wanted to create something with Wu Xie/XiaoGe/Liu Sang, awesome, have at it! But if he is just on the fringes, that's totally fine.

2. Guardian (drama)

I love Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan. I love the hilarity of an absolute disaster human and the immortal who's all heart-eyes and also confused by all this newfangled technology. I would love slices of life with that dynamic, love the two of them interacting with the rest of SID, or be happy with romance or smut.

As I also mentioned, I do love Guo Changcheng/Chu Shuzhi, and would love to see some fun, tropy sorts of things, like undercover dating, undercover at the gay bar, there was only one bed, etc. I definitely bought into these two and their slowly developing friendship/love story and would love to see what you do with that.

Dear lovely Yule-person,

First, I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to get this letter up. Thank you so much for writing me a story in one of my tiny fandoms. I'm so excited to see the story you write, and I hope that you enjoy writing it!

Overall, things that I love:
+ Snark and banter
+ Angst with a happy ending
+ Slow and realistic building of relationships
+ Addressing relationship challenges realistically
+ AUs

Overall dislikes and things I really don't want to see:
+ Dystopia and US politics AUs
+ Embarrassment or humiliation kink
+ gratuitous violence and gore
+ pregnancy, babies, adoption
+ stories set in developing countries that don't reflect sociopolitical realities
+ Bestiality/vore

Specifics are to be found in my Yuletide form. I realize I've asked for a lot of post-canon
pic; if that's not your jam with Hidden Legacy, Daniel Tiger, or Mrs. Pollifax, then hopefully the general information I've provided allows you to write fiction in canon. I'm largely focused on relationships, so feel free to expand those. For example, what's happening between Carstairs and Bishop when Mrs. Pollifax goes missing--is there tension, are they trying to care for one another, or leave the stress at work when they go home? How is Grandma Frida advising Catalina about Runa or the Etterson family, or about her relationship with her other grandmother? I love to see what's happening between the characters.

Thanks again, I'm sure I'll love whatever you write!

It has been forever and a day since I posted here for reasons not related to Yuletide. When the masses headed back to DW after the Tumblr meltdown, I was delighted! But I still haven't posted because, well, life kind of exploded, in a good way, a few months ago.

I started the process for international adoption in Dec 2016 and matched in early May 2018. In late August, I headed to China with my mom to get my daughter. Miz M is an adorable, happy, friendly two-year-old who has picked up English astonishingly quickly. She's a delight and a joy, and also changed my life in a million ways. Becoming a mom to a toddler isn't what I expected, and yet it is. I took off three months for maternity leave, which was incredible and the hardest thing I've ever done. I headed back to work right after Thanksgiving and THAT might be the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm slated to go back to work full-time today and... I'm home with a sick toddler. C'est la vie, I suppose.

afrikate: The Jolly Christmas Hippo is dancing around for Christmas! (Everybody loves the Christmas Hippo)
This year, I got astonishingly lucky and received two lovely Yuletide fics.

First, I got Put on Your Best, Boy [and I'll wear my pearls] by Nerissa. I really enjoyed Ally Carter's one-off YA novel "Not If I Save You First" and Nerissa delivered on my wish to see Maddie dealing with the culture shock of returning to DC and regular society after the isolation of her life in Alaska.

Second, I received a Mrs. Pollifax fic which hit all my boxes-- epistolary, a little slice of life, and a nice moment between Carstairs and Bishop. Christmas Letter was a delight, and I encourage you to read it.

I also wrote a Mrs. Pollifax fic for Niki, Fields of Juniper and Lamplight. It's a 5 things fic, which is one of my fave structures for writing Yuletide. In this case, it's five letters in the relationship between Emily Pollifax, an older lady who volunteers to spy for the CIA, and John Sebastian Farrell, a younger man who is also an agent. While I love their relationship in the books, I have never particularly shipped them. Niki's prompt included a picture of Daniel Craig!Bond and Judy Dench!M, and wow, suddenly, I saw Emily and John in a new light. It was fun trying to imagine a realistic relationship between the two of them, given their different ages and circumstances.

Mrs. Pollifax
As I mention in my request, I find the Mrs. Pollifax series delightful and the first 3-4 books are my favorites. I'm interested here in gen character studies--Mrs. Pollifax is so quirky and interesting, I'd love to see her trying to integrate her new spy life with her old one, while compartmentalizing like a champ. How does being a spy change her? How does knowing her change Carstairs, Bishop, or Farrell? I'd love to see them bemused by her worldview, while also respecting her abilities. Perhaps a conversation with Carstairs and Farrell--two old friends catching up.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before (movie)
I fell in love with Lara Jean in this movie. She's such an interesting combination of knowing her own mind and owning her quirks while also being insecure. I love her style, how she might live partially in a dream-world, it works for her. While I love the relationship she develops with Peter, she's a high school junior. I'd love a look at Lara Jean in college, or post-college. How does she settle into herself? How does that change her relationships, with Peter and with her sisters? Do she and Peter break up at some point, what would happen when they meet up again?

Not If I Save You First
Maddie has a hell of a lot of self-possession and the skills to survive in Alaska. But what happens when she does get back to DC? The first few weeks will be a blur, but what is she thinking/feeling when she settles back into her life? How does Logan play into that?

Flying

I'm trying to get into the habit of posting more than just annually at Yuletide. So have a meme...

1. Where did you go the last time you took an airplane ride?
Got off a plane less than 24 hours ago from Amsterdam to Washington, DC. This was a 2-week work trip to: Geneva, Amsterdam, and Dar es Salaam.

2. Are you a nervous flyer or a comfortable flyer?
I have no problems with actual flying. I have pretty serious anxiety about being late to the airport, which leads to things like getting to the airport in Dar 3.5 hours before my flight.

3. Window seat or aisle seat?
Aisle, always. I get up too often to deal with the anxiety of asking a seat mate to move.

4. What is the worst experience you've had flying?
One time, sitting at the back of a 6-seater plane, the pilot announced he might not be able to land due to fog and we played a game of telephone where he asked where else I wanted him to land. Thankfully, he was able to make it through the fog and we landed without issue.

5. What is the best experience you've had flying?
I've been bumped up to first class on Etihad. You have your own little cubicle with a closing door and the bathroom is larger than my bathroom at home. The purser got me drunk on some very nice champagne.
afrikate: Ray Kowalski is getting his geek on, with his clip on shades flipped up (Default)
I also wanted to mention my awesome Yuletide gift, And Not The Next Day by WintryGooseball . It's in the same Briggs werewolf-verse that my epic is set in, and it perfectly captures what a first meeting between Bran, head werewolf of North America, and Asil the Moor, a maybe-crazy old wolf, who certainly thinks he needs to be put down. It's a delight, especially if you know the canon, and I recommend it.

Happy New Years to all and Good Riddance to 2017! In many ways, outwardly, 2017 was obviously a complete dumpster fire of a year, what with the current US administration and the ongoing attempts to strip Americans of our rights. I protested a lot in 2017, and called my Congresspeople's offices probably less than I should, and gave a good deal of money to the ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Center and Planned Parenthood. This year was tough for me in the way it was tough for many people (and worse for so many more) as I saw just how easily political norms went down and experienced how quickly we can burn out from this kind of chronic, petty, vicious bullshit. It was a tough, tough year.

On the other hand, this was also the year that I bought a house, a stand-alone house with a yard and everything. The year that I was recognized as a key person within my organization and my project, one worthy of external validation and even ham-handed attempts at recruitment away to a competitor. It was the year I started the adoption process, something I don't talk about much even with trusted friends and am kind of hesitant to bring up here. A process that's long and strange-- look, it will probably be 2019 before I bring a child home-- and which it turns out I am superstitious enough not to want to talk about it unless it compromises everything. But yeah, I started the process and got through some major milestones (home study is approved!) and I'll keep working on the required trainings and it will move forward.

In things I'm more comfortable talking about, I also posted 31,501 words of fic. One of those was my Yuletide story, In Her Great Eyes, which was an outsider POV of the Cynster Family's matriarch, Duchess Honoria, on a morning when she was a little tied up. It was a lot of fun to write, even though I had a crisis of faith in the middle of it and [personal profile] bayleaf had to reassure me. Alice, my OC, sprang fully formed, which it turns out is a bit of a theme for me in my writing.

The other two fics were part of my ongoing series The Curse of Natalis, an AU of Captain America that merges MCU with Patricia Briggs werewolf stories. This story was what I poured my fannish energy into this year (and lets face it, last year as well), and since I'm still not done with it, I'll be throwing myself at it in 2018 as well. I might have posted 29K of the series this year, but it's over 60K so far, and the latest part, which is back with my beta, is another 48K. The last part will probably be about the same when it's written. I remember whining to [personal profile] paintedmaypole  that the whole thing would be "like, 80k, probably" when I started this monster and asked her to be my beta. It's going to top out close to double those words, and I am both incredibly proud of myself and incredibly overwhelmed that I am *not yet done* and that it might be 2019 before this is finished too. Though I'm going to be hopeful that 2018 will see the end of werewolf!Bucky's epic journey towards defeating Hydra/winning Steve Rogers' heart.

I have some other hopes for 2018 (like, wow, would I love to get better about dealing with small house problems like the burnt out lights in my basement), but mostly I'd like to be better at connecting with people. We'll see if I manage that, but it's definitely my goal. Only Connect, I suppose, should be my motto for the year.

Dear lovely Yule-person,

Thank you so much for writing me a story in one of my tiny fandoms. I'm so excited to see the story you write, and I hope that you enjoy writing it!

Overall, things that I love:
+ Snark and banter
+ Angst with a happy ending
+ Slow and realistic building of relationships, particularly polyamorous relationships
+ Addressing relationship challenges realistically
+ AUs

Overall dislikes and things I really don't want to see:
+ Dystopia and US politics AUs
+ Embarrassment or humiliation kink
+ gratuitous violence and gore
+ pregnancy, babies, adoption
+ Unlikely to come up this year, but stories set in developing countries that don't reflect sociopolitical realities
+ Bestiality/vore

Now, onto the specifics...

The Keltiad
Dear Author, this series is one of my absolute faves, I love it to pieces, it was so formative for me. As I said, aside from Aeron and Theo having a sexual relationship, I'd love anything you write here. Some specific ideas:
+ Show me the conversations that took place between Rhodri and Gwydion, Gwydion and Aeron, Aeron and Rhodri as Aeron's first marriage was going forward. How did these three deal with the dynamics? If you want to go to Gwydion/Rhodri place, that's fine. I want to see how these three ended up dealing with the political realities of their lives.
+ Tell me about Aeron and Rhodri's honeymoon--they got such a short time together, what was it like? How did they suit?
+ What happens to Gwydion and Aeron after they defeat Jaun Akhera and have to become a true ruling couple?
+ Show me how Aeron and Theo's friendship develops

Cynster Family Saga
I love Devil's Bride and have read a lot of the Cynster series over the years. I'd love it if you bring in the other Cynsters, or maybe Lady Osbaldstone or Dowager Duchess Helena. Their relationship has such a spark, and I'd love to see what happens over the years-- how do they deal with the troubles they have. What happens when they're at odds? How do they deal with their children? Slices of life would be lovely here.

Alpha and Omega series
I've been deep in this series for a while (I'm writing a fusion between A&O and the MCU) so I've gotten to know it well. I asked for Asil and Bran because there's so much history between them and the books give these tantalizing hints. Show me some of their history-- what happens when they meet for the first time? Do they have adventures in Europe? What do they gossip about and how are things in their current, shared pack? What did Asil think about meeting Mercy for the first time?

I don't really see these two in a romantic light and I think neither would cheat on their mates. But if they met before they were mated, or in between mates, I could see them having a fling. Who would seduce who? What kind of dominance battle would sex between them be? How would their experiences and cultures shape a relationship between them? And how would that relationship shape the wolf packs of Europe?

It may take some time for me to respond to you on Christmas morning-- I'll be with family. But I promise to provide feedback as soon as I can. I'll be thrilled with anything you write!

New fic!

The third part of my epic Steve/Bucky werewolf AU is now up at the AO3!

Upon the Wild Waves by [personal profile] afrikate
MCU, Bucky/Steve

In 1943, during a firefight turned ugly in the North African desert, Bucky Barnes is bitten by werewolf. After capturing Barnes, Dr. Armin Zola becomes intrigued with the possibilities werewolves present to Hydra. Unfortunately, one member of Hydra fails to read the instruction manual.

After recovering from the horrors of captivity, Bucky is ready to start fighting back. But how do you fight back against an evil cabal operating in secret? Well, first you're going to need a team...

Note: Technically, this is a crossover of the MCU with the Patricia Briggs - Mercy Thompson series. However, you do not need to have read the books to read the fic. MCU canon-compliant through the Avengers. Except, you know, werewolves.

As some of you know, I've been working on this since sometime in March 2016. You can find the first two parts here:
Part 1:
The Curse of Natalis
Part 2: We Shall Rest on the Headlands

Parts 4 and 5 are in the works-- my amazing beta
[personal profile] paintedmaypole spent the weekend helping my physically lay them out and figure out what comes next.

Friends, it's the first two parts of my epic Steve/Bucky werewolf AU! I've been working on this since sometime in March, and now it's actually real! Parts 1 & 2 have been posted, parts 3 and 4 are drafted and in beta. Many, many thanks to my absolutely glorious beta [personal profile] paintedmaypole . She pushed me to be a better writer, told me when I was overthinking things, and made me laugh really, really hard. Thanks so much, k8!

Plus/Minus

afrikate: Ray Kowalski is getting his geek on, with his clip on shades flipped up (Default)
On the plus side, I am now up to 28k between parts 1 and 2 of this fic, and I have more to type up for part 3, so when all's said and done, I probably have 35k or so of shitty first draft, plus the rest that I'll have to write.

On the minus side, I just went ahead and cancelled my subscriptions on Comixology. They were all Marvel, and while I'm sad I won't be reading Black Panther again for a while, I can't justify spending money on Marvel. And I wrote an email to Comixology about it. I suspect it won't matter and they won't care, but I'd like them to know why I'm voting with my feet.

So, I signed up for the Stucky Big Bang (omg how much do I hate that portmanteau). Summaries are currently with artists for claiming and the pics are due at the end of July/early August for a mid-August posting period. I've been working on mine since February, pieces here and there, but this weekend I got serious and [Bad username or unknown identity: painted maypole helped me to determine the best way to go about this, and since yesterday I've typed up nearly 22,000 words that I'd previously written in longhand in a notebook. It feels good to write, and interesting to write this way, where I've got lots scattered about and now I'm putting things in chronological order for the story, and I want to know what happens next. I want more. I mean, now I have to type up the more and at some point I'll have to start writing the more again, but you know what I mean. It's exciting to have this thing I've been thinking about for months, possibly years, turning slowly into reality.]

Dear Yuletide Author,

Hello! Thank you so much for writing something for me! I am so excited to see what you come up with, and I'll enjoy it no matter what.

Overall likes: angst with happy endings; banter; slow and realistic building of relationships, particularly polyamorous relationships; addressing relationship challenges realistically; AUs

Mrs. Pollifax series by Dorothy Gilman

How does knowing her change Carstairs or Bishop? Tell me all about it!

The Montmaray Journals by Michelle Cooper

As I said, the poly relationship between Simon, Toby, and Julia is really only alluded to by Sophie. How do the three of them come together? How do they negotiate their relationship? What keeps them together, particularly early on when the relationship is so fragile and Toby is so damaged?

Fast & Furious 6
I love this series completely unironically, and I particularly love Han/Gisele. I will literally love anything that describes their relationship, or what happens to Han after Gisele's death. Or an AU where Gisele lives. ANYTHING.

Heist Society
For this one, I'm in it for the world building. If you want to give me some Hale/Kat that's fine, but mostly, I want to see the downtime of a bunch of con artists. How does Uncle Eddie mentor them? How does coming of age in a con artist family affect your relationships outside that family. Can you have relationships outside the family? Tell me everything, Author. Tell me a story.

It is so nice not to have to spend the evening making conversation with someone you have never met before Tuesday and who is both in a contractual relationship with you and at least a decade older.

It is so nice to be home, sitting on my couch, with the Samcat grooming herself while lying on my legs and keeping me warm.

I miss 80 degree heat so much right now.

I need to slow my roll as work grows increasingly frustrating.

I have read two short story collections and am in the midst of a third. I usually hate short stories, but these are proving to be interesting.

I am enjoying Americanah, but am vaguely relieved when I put it down.

So it seems like Wednesday is this reading meme, and I posted two days in a row, so why not.

What I just finished reading

A Night of No Return by Sarah Morgan, which was an utterly predictable and lame romance novel, which happened to be $1.99 at Amazon.

Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein. A companion to Code Name Verity, which I read on the plane home from San Francisco, and which made me cry a lot, but which wasn't as affecting as CNV. I think part of it is the story--you know what is going to happen, to some extent, going in and so the shock of it is not as immediate as what happens in CNV. But it was a really great book, and I highly recommend it.

The Eliusive Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman. Here's the thing--I love Mrs. Pollifax. I love her spirit and her refusal to give in and her conviction and the way she assumes she can win and she does. This is one of the early ones, where Mrs. Pollifax is in Bulgaria, and it's just fabulous.

Untold (The Lynburn Legacy #2) by Sarah Rees Brennan, which I very much enjoyed. The first book ends on this brutally crushing note, and this one redeemed everything, kept the Gothic horror alive, and left me panting for more. Too bad the next one isn't due out for at least a year.

Battle for Bittora by Anuja Chauhan. I read this as part of [personal profile] deepad 's exchange, as a chance to read a very popular Indian author who isn't being published in the US. The book is about Jinni, who comes from a political family but has no political aspirations herself, ending up running for a Parliamentary seat in Bittora, her childhood home, and running against her childhood friend/crush. It was very Bridget Jones-ish in the failing up-ness of it all, and Jinni herself didn't speak to me, but her grandmother, Amma, who convinces her to run, is hiliarous, as are the cast of thousands moving the election forward. Chauhan code-switches and throws Hindi (I assume Hindi, but it could be one of the other languages) into the mix, but I think Western audiences will have no trouble following along. If you like chick-lit, politics, and heroines failing up, this is your jam.

What I'm reading now

I've been between books, but I started Dracula today, in honor of Halloween, the new TV show, and [personal profile] cleolinda 's review.

Also, I started Feed by Mira Grant, but it got a little intense for commute reading. I really just need to sit down and read the whole thing in one go. Next plane ride, I think.

What I'm going to read next

I've got a couple of books on hold at the library to pick up. I also just bought Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, which is on sale at Amazon today and which I hear is awesome. Plus, it looks like another Chauhan book, Those Pricey Thakur Girls is on it's way. An embarassment of riches!

Guys, I just watched the Veronica Mars trailer, and it has brought back all my Veronica/Logan and Veronica/Weevil feels. Because, honestly, I totally shipped Veronica/Weevil. He was awesome. There's a great fic, The Enemy You Know by kieyra, where Veronica and Weevil get together and I love it and it is awesome. You should totally read it. Go, now, I will wait.

Also, the VMars trailer brought back my Dick Casablancas hate-on. OMG he is the WORST and I hate him so much! Ugh.

So, you know, that happened. Also, an apple update: I have given myself tendinitis from peeling apples; I still have a shit ton left. So, that's awesome. Apple pie filling, courtesy of [personal profile] bossymarmalade is up next.

afrikate: (So much side eye)
On Saturday, I went apple-picking with my friend A and her daughter little A. We had a glorious time, we ate lots of apples and caught up and little A was adorable and then I came home with 23 pounds of apples, like you do.

Yesterday, I made applesauce with about 8 or so pounds of apples. Maybe ten. And I made apple scones. And I ate some apples. The bag of apples, however, don't seem to have gotten much smaller. I'm seriously concerned that they are breeding in the giant apple bag.

Today I spent some time looking for apple recipes and tonight I'm making Smitten Kitchen's apple sharlotka. If you have any recipes you can suggest, preferably for things that freeze well, please let me know!

ETA: Guys, the apple sharlotka is SOOO GOOD. If you make it, it's worth it to zest a lemon and throw that in as well. Also definitely sprinkle cinnamon and powdered sugar on top. DELICIOUS. You need this in your life.
