    The tradition of Great Lent is meant to prepare the soul through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, and atonement, focusing on the spiritual cleansing of sins to achieve eventual salvation. While Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Catholic Church, the 48-day period begins on "Clean Monday" in Armenia. In today's tradition, Lent is observed by avoiding alcohol and all animal products, and abstinence is a focal point. Throughout Lent, Christians also commit to giving up certain luxuries and taking steps to increase acts of kindness.
