The IAVS

Born from an exchange of ideas between M. Costantini and G. Sonesson in the conference of the International Association for Semiotic Studies in Perpignan in 1988, the International Association for Visual Semiotics was founded as an association under the French law in 1989 in Blois. The aim of the IAVS is to gather semioticians all over the world who are interested in images and, in general terms, in visual signification, without privileging any particular interpretation of semiotics and without favoring any semiotic tradition.

Nacida de un intercambio de ideas entre M. Costantini y G. Sonesson en el congreso de la Asociación Internacional de Semiótica en Perpiñán en 1988, la Asociación Internacional de Semiótica Visual se fundó como asociación según la ley francesa en 1989 en Blois. El objetivo de la AISV es reunir a semióticos de todo el mundo interesados en las imágenes y, en términos generales, en la significación visual, sin privilegiar ninguna interpretación particular de la semiótica y sin favorecer una tradición semiótica especial.

Née d’une discussion entre M. Costantini et G. Sonesson lors du congrès de l’Association internationale de sémiotique à Perpignan en 1988, l’Association internationale de sémiotique visuelle a été fondée, en tant qu’association selon la loi française, en 1989 à Blois. Le but premier de l’AISV est de réunir des sémioticiens du monde qui s’intéressent aux images et, plus généralement, à la signification visuelle, sans privilégier une interprétation particulière de la sémiotique, et sans favoriser une tradition quelconque.

      Thanks for your interest. You can become a member when you are able to attend to one of the AISV-IAVS conferences, and cay pay the membership fee (40 euros) directly on site. At this moment we are in the 2015 conference in Liege, Belgium. The next conference will probably be held in Turkey in 2017, and/or in Mexico in 2018.

    Dear Sir/Madam,
    I am a mature student in the University of Limerick in Ireland. I am currently doing a final year project on the effectiveness of visual aids/pictograph use in health and safety and waste management. Can you give any guidance on where I could get articles, surveys, studies etc. on this subject matter? Has your organisation done any research in this area? Such as the psychology and effect signs have on people’s minds and the way they might influence their behaviour after seeing or observing signs/pictograms particularly relation to health and safety waste management?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
