hola. i’m ai. (say “hi ai!” everyone :-) )
i’d never blogged before because i just couldn’t find good reasons to write a blog…until now.
recently it dawned on me that i must eat more healthily. so i’ve started to eat mostly what i cook instead of resorting to junk food or that sort of easier options. the only problem is that i really do not enjoy cooking very much!
so this blog is a way for me to remind myself that i must cook and also to keep track of what i’ve cooked and eaten. simple as that. it’s also a pretty legit reason to start a blog, i think.
of course, hopefully i will be writing non-cooking/food related stuff along the way.
oh yeah, i may switch around between english and japanese, depending on how i feel.
F.A.Q.:
what camera do you use?
– mostly it’s canon eos 40d. for film i shoot with Nikon fm2 as well as natura classica, which is a point-and-shoot camera and my favorite.
do you have recipes for such and such?
– i wish i could write down recipes, but i honestly don’t have the time. you could try asking anyway, but i cannot promise you anything.

Everything you post looks really amazing! It’s hard to believe you don’t actually enjoy cooking…
You should post a tutorial on how to make those Rice Balls? I didn’t want to spell it wrong! But yeah, they always look fantastic. Good job :)
I’ve actually been thinking about starting a food blog as well so thanks for the inspiration.

I just found your blog through your photos on Flickr and I love it! I adore Japanese food and your food photos really inspire me. I am vegetarian but eat a little fish now and then. One of my favorite things to eat is udon, ramen, somen, soba (noodle fan) and the simple but wonderful bowl of rice with miso soup. It just makes me so happy!

June 9, 2009 at 4:06 am
Wow this is one of the most delicious blogs I’ve seen in a while! I’m living in Japan too so its so fun to see the meals you eat. I found myself saying, “hey I could make that!” several times after looking at your posts – which is nice because a lot of the food blogs I see use ingredients that are hard to find in Japan.
My favorite health food here is definitely konnyaku – I love the texture.
Anyway thanks for sharing your great posts, this is definitely going into my google reader!
October 6, 2009 at 6:11 am
Your photos are so beautiful, thank you for sharing. I lived in Osaka for 18 months as an English teacher and miss Japanese food and zakka style, so I look forward to seeing more of your gorgeous pix!! ^_^

Hi, Ai! I love seeing your blog when it gets posted to Twitter. (I believe I have it bookmarked, but I’m bad about getting to my bookmarks on a regular basis.)
I was wondering, do you have a Twitter account, so I could follow you (and hopefully your blogposts?)
Thanks!

I just found your blog and am totally smitten. The simplicity, the lovely photography, the dry humor, and the tasty looking food. Beautiful.
Oh and you have the best mugs – I want to know where you found each and every one!
Off to tell my friends about your blog now… after I’m done making myself maybe a smoothie or a bowl of chazuke. You made me hungry.
November 8, 2009 at 3:17 pm
hajimemasite… your blog is so simple and beautiful! and you have the cutest serving wares. love it.
November 9, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Ai, I love your blog. Your English is so au courant and flawless I’m assuming that you either, a: were born in Japan but grew up here, b: you were brought up in a bi-lingual home, or, least likely, c: you went to school here and mastered English at a later age. At any rate, funny writing style, great pictures and I’m impressed with how imaginative and adventurous you are in the kitchen. For someone who doesn’t like to cook you sure do a great job. Oh, and I love the “appetizer” bit where you have a snack and a beer before dinner. Very cute. I’ve added you to my blogs list. Maybe you’ll add me to yours. Don’t worry, even if you don’t I’m still a fan and will keep coming back. Good luck and keep having fun. -Kevin

Hi Ai! This is a very charming blog you’ve got here! I visit it practically every day, even though it’s torture to see the food photos and not be able to taste them.
And much like you, I am a spender and a horrible saver, love different forms of art and prefer cats to dogs :-) Just thought I’d share.
Keep posting!

I love your blog because it takes me away from where I am… a place I’m not so fond of. May I ask who you write about music for? I have also worn the hat of music journalist, though I’ve temporarily had to find other work. If you have time, please check out my blog!
March 16, 2010 at 1:11 pm
Hello!
I’m coming to Japan for the second time in August this year. Last time I ate a lot of junk food – pizza, seven-eleven meatballs and mcdonalds – alongside more traditional food. I’m hoping this tim to eat more Japanese (and more cheaply!). I’m loving your blog for inspiration! I can;t wait to land in Japan!
April 15, 2010 at 10:10 pm
Hello Ai!
I love your blog so much, your photos are lush! I have started my own little blog, it’s not much but I wrote a bit about your blog and put up some pictures. I hope you don’t mind, let me know if you want to take them down.
Always look forward to see your updates!

Hi, Millo. Thank you for kind words!
May 5, 2010 at 1:30 pm
Hi Ai~
Your blog is seriously too awesome for words. Thanks for faithfully uploading every day and sharing. My friend and I are law students in NY and whenever we get stressed (i.e., everyday) we check ur blog. I love cats too~! I’m partial to this site: http://moire.lowdope.com/
Btw, if you’re worried about people pirating your pictures then try some of these methods: http://css-tricks.com/techniques-for-fighting-image-theft/. Not sure if they will help due to limitations on wordpress but hopefully they will. The pics of your niece and nephew are so adorable!
May 6, 2010 at 12:37 am
Hi Miju, thank you so much for your comment. You made my day. I’ve seen some funny footage of Moire on YouTube, I think. So cute. Also thanks for the link on the image theft. I will definitely look into it!

July 29, 2010 at 3:52 pm
Hi Ai !
I don’t even remember how I came to your blog and that’s not that important…
But you can’t imagine just how much this is helping me just every day. Yes, sounds weird but… to cut a long story short, 36 years old, still don’t know how to eat. Always wondering what the other people do. What do they have for breakfast, do they always eat at lunch time ? Is it OK to have toast in the morning AND for diner ? At least do people do that ?…
You see those are my questions, every day… (not so relaxing or interesting thoughts you could say – and I would agree !) but anyway, you are bringing me answers, in my mail box, every day. That is so precious to me. It’s great to get a peek into what someone else eats.
To make things even nicer, the look of the posts is so clear and simple, to the point (my point that is, ha ha !) and the pictures are attractive…
Thank you so much. I just wanted to tell you.
(One question though but maybe it’s too nosy… it’s about the quantity. Do you picture exactly what you eat ? Say if there’s three sembeis on the picture, does it means you didn’t have five ?
Sorry if that’s too much asking…)
Thank you again so so much !
July 30, 2010 at 1:40 am
Thank YOU for your very sweet comment. While it’s so nice to hear that this blog helps you with some ideas, I feel somewhat embarrassed because I don’t always have a balanced diet!!! As for your question, I’d be a lot skinnier if I limited myself to only 3 senbei if you know what I mean.
July 31, 2010 at 5:12 pm
Thank you !
And I love your answer – although I don’t know how skinny, or not, you are anyway !
I realised shortly after I sent my first comment that your pictures are more artistic of course, you’re not trying to show exactly or to record scientifically everything you eat ! Silly me !
(And by the way, to answer your question, yes, I’m sure it would be nice all compiled in a book !)
Happy second birthday too. Keep going. Even though your first aim, as you wrote somewhere, was to try and eat in a more balanced way and you’re not so happy how that turned out, at least you’re enjoying posting everyday (and again, giving something to other people – me !)
I can feel you’re enjoying it and it must bring you something too because it shows so nicely.
It’s always a pleasure (not only useful as I mentioned before) to come and visit you !
See you… tomorrow ! And the next day ! And again…
August 4, 2013 at 3:52 am
Hi Ai, it’s purplefish/mélanie again !
I’ve enjoyed visiting you every day for all those years. While in Japan, while not in Japan, while back in Japan…
I’m leaving again now. Things are changing, and for many reasons I feel I have to stop reading you and looking at your beautiful pictures.
So I’m unsubscribing. But I wanted to tell you it’s really just me, nothing against you (haha does it sound like a breaking up message ??! Funny situation !)
Also want to thank you again.
Keep posting and inspiring many people.
Keep eating kakigoori. It makes me so envious everytime !
Bye Ai !
August 2, 2010 at 4:51 pm
Hi Ai,
I love your blog and check it everyday. All the meals you have are so alien to the boring standard here (England). It’s a lot of fun to see what interesting things you’re putting together and I also love the more personal snippets about your everyday life. So far I have tried your Avocado Spaghetti recipe which was delicious by the way! I was a bit scared to add all that fresh ginger but next time I’m gonna use more!
Thanks x

Hi, I really love your blog and the style of photography!
May I ask, what camera do you use and how do you keep up with film development? Do you develop it yourself?
I really love film photography but it takes on a financial toll for me as an exchange student here in Japan. Do you have any tips such as cheap film/development? Thanks!
October 4, 2010 at 12:00 pm
Hi, Hanna, thank you for your comment. I use a Canon 40D (but always have an eye for newer gadgets). As for film I don’t shoot film as much as I’d like, and when I do, I have them developed at the shop. There’s no cheap way to go about it, really. I pay about 1000yen per roll for developing/scanning. I have a film scanner, but it just takes way too long. I hope this helps.

July 1, 2011 at 5:40 pm
Hi Ai !
A colleague and I are realising a report about breakfasts in the world for Kellogg’s company and we lack of pictures from everyday breakfasts in Japan.
If you agree, could you please send me 2-3 breakfast pictures which you think are representative of a “normal” everyday breakfast in Japan ? It is not paid, I will simply mention “© aixxx”.

Hello Ai! I’ve been following your blog for ages. I live in the USA, but am originally from Canada. Started looking at your blog when I lived in the UK. All over the place!
I love the food shots – and the combinations of food you eat is unusual to me and so therefore fascinating. I work on a computer, so often check in to see what’s for dinner.
Is your 7-11 the same as in America? A convenience store? Always wondered.
All the best from Portland, Oregon
Peg
March 28, 2012 at 8:51 am
Hi, Peg! 7-11 in Japan is an entirely different creature, really. The American 7-11 is not at all convenient compared to ours!

Ai, I have followed your blog now for a couple of years now and it is one of my favourites. I love seeing the meals you make because they inspire me to try new meals at home.
Something I have have always wondered though is where you get your cutlery and dishes? Do you order any online and would you share some places with me. They are so sleek and simple. :)

Howdy one of my favorite bloggers?
I ve been following this blog for a quite long time and every time i visit i admire u in two ways which are ur food ( obviously) and such a down to earth Englisg u use considering ur nationality. So i would like to ask what kind of career u r having if u dont mind. If u dont feel awkward answer my question on blog email is also nice and no reply is also very much understandable ~

Hola Ai!
I’m a reader from Barcelona. I’m just starting to cook some Asian food. I love all the dishes you post. I think I’m going to start try make them. I hope I can introduce this dishes into my regular diet. What are the main ingredients I need to have in my kitchen?
Thank you!

I think that the Spanish tend to appreciate and understand the Japanese food very well. At least my friends from Spain are big fans. As for the ingredients, the only thing that comes to my mind is soy sauce. Some miso and powdered dashi would help, too. Good luck!
P.S. Barcelona is one of my absolute favorite cities.

Hi Ai,
I love reading your blog, all the way from Wellington, NZ. It’s fun to see what you ate during your day, somehow it makes me a bit more aware about what it is I am consuming! I agree with your stance on good quality chocolate too. We have some amazing chocolate from a little company called the Wellington Chocolate Factory. They make their own in a wee factory in the city and it is truly divine. If you have a PO Box I’d like to send some to you would want to try.
If not, here’s the website http://www.wcf.co.nz/ (and no, I do not work for then haha, just super proud of my hometown choc!)

Hi ai, I started following your blog something like 8 years ago, and then i kind of stopped in between, today i wanted to check out photo blogs coz I just picked up a new camera (FM2) over the weekend, and I recalled your blog nestled somewhere in my bookmarked pages. I’m so happy you’re still regularly posting (and also exercising a lot more now). Thanks for keeping this going, i loved your blog then, and I’m happy to come back to see it still going strong!

Hi Ai…Happy New Year! Im from Indonesia. I have followed your blog since few years ago. But now just checking your blog again. Suddenly remember about your blog after watching video in youtube which has same theme like your blog, simple stories. And still interesting to see your photos and read your simple stories day by day. By the way, do you share your stories too in another social media like Instagram or youtube? Hope you have a nice day always.
