ImageI finally finished a book this week!

Treasure Island is a classic classic adventure. There's the young boy, living a life of drudgery helping is mum run an inn when suddenly Pirates! Gold! Guns! Death! Young Jim Hawkins gets swept up into this fantastic world were everyone talks funny and wears a pistol.

John Silver, the villain(?) of the piece is a challenge to understand. He seems to change his mind with every new plot development, alternately trying to kill or befriend Jim. Maybe he is just channeling his essential pirateness?

This book is the most piratey thing you will ever read. There is, at times, incomprehensible pirate lingo, parrots on shoulders that squawk 'pieces of eight', rum, treasure maps where x marks the spot, the black spot and lots of "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum".  I guess because this is the first popular pirate novel, it has set the stereotype for everything else to come.

I have to confess, I am a real sucker for classic adventure books. I really enjoyed Treasure Island, but not as much as the more sciency adventures, like Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

But it's an easy read and great fun, I'd recommend it.

So.

I finally bit the bullet tonight and downloaded iTunes. This is my first experience of an iThing.

Apple is so wrong.

... But look at all that shiny, cheap TV shows!

Edit: False alarm, the show I downloaded iTunes to get isn't available in my country.

I went to see The Sapphires at the movies on Friday. I was kinda dubious, but it was actually a really good film. The film follows four Aboriginal women who go to Vietnam to entertain the US troops during the Vietnam War. There was lots of humanity in the characters and the action at the end was genuinely scary, maybe because the start of the film was so light and carefree. The music was excellent and all the female leads are just stunning.

I'd recommend it. :)

I'm home sick today. I've had some gastric messiness... bleh for the last few days and took today off to rest up.

To cheer myself up a bit I made myself a sandwich for lunch. This is, in fact, my favourite sandwich and something I like to call the Super Vegetarian and I'd love to share it with you guys.

To make this sandwich you will require:

- a horizontal surface
- two pieces of wholemeal bread (I like the seed encrusted ones, for extra oomph)
- a butter knife, or equivalent (at work in the Tearoom of Disappearing Knives I usually resort to a spoon handle)
- peanut butter (I use a 'natural' 100% one from the healthfood shop)
- a carrot
- a grating device
- baby spinach

1. Put the bread on the horizontal surface, spread peanut butter on both pieces.
2. Grate carrot, put grated carrot on one piece of bread.
3. Put baby spinach on other pieces of bread.
4. Smoosh pieces of bread together.
5. Eat!

Wholemeal bread = fibre and protein
Peanut butter = protein
Spinach = fibre and iron
Carrot = Vitamin C to help your body absorb iron.

Plus, it's delicious!

And now I'm going to laze on the couch and watch Horrible Histories.

Welcome to my new DW! This is all shiny and new and I'm still trying to work out where I fit in this sprawling, diverse metropolis that is DreamWidth.

Please feel free to leave comments, I'd love to meet new people. :)
