I remember aspiring to do this every year. Turns out the last one was 2012.

Lots of dead shops )

So, I went to look at Scolt Head marshes. I had inclined to do this on Sunday, but K said under no circumstances was she going too (which is very much what I said, at her age).

Dad has died, in hospital, in California. We had just decided, yesterday, to stop the interventions and take him home, but he didn't last that long. (He did last twenty years longer than we would have predicted twenty years ago, and he had quite clearly finished.)

This seems a good moment to dig out That List.

Ten things. )

Stoneleigh (Nicole Foss) from The Automatic Earth is talking tomorrow evening, Thursday, 7:30pm, at CB1 on Mill Road, on peak oil and financial collapse. She's good, and this has been organised at very short notice and I've seen very little publicity. I've been to three of her talks now, and she fills much larger venues, and audiences are engaged and enthusiastic. Probably well worth going.

So, which ones are they?

2012 commercial and retail vacancies )

Executive summary:

While I was going round I thought there were many fewer than there were last year, but they don't half add up when you put them all together.

Subjectively, the major difference this year was how many of the shops were being refurbished, and how much new building there is going on.

Shops moving in include hearing aid centres and dodgy money changers.

Unfortunately I can't go, it being during the week, but it's obviously exactly the kind of thing there ought to be and I commend it. Particularly to anyone who wants to go and take photos.

[ETA: looks like I may be able to go. Have got ticket.]

Excellent (long) guest article at Club Orlov, on the Occupy movement and how, if your life is the wrong shape at the moment to risk getting peppersprayed for The Cause, you can help by gardening.
