17:14 - It's all done
I passed the defense successfully. All that's left to do is turn in all the paperwork.

14:14 - Obligatory snow pictures
Just a few pictures taken of the snow. A bit difficult since it was snowing, drizzling, windy and I was trying to keep the plastic bag over the camera so it wouldn't get wet. I need something better to shelter the camera. A plastic grocery bag doesn't work too well.

22:31 - Fun at the beach
So here's a few shots from the beach (not all of my vacation pictures). I almost got clipped by the paraglider and shortly afterwards I was panhandled by a seagull.

03:00 - Robert Frost should be rolling over in 3, 2, 1...
Two packets diverged in a yellow patch cord and I, I sent the one with less latency, and that has made all the difference.

19:50 - Craigslist or eBay?
If you were selling something, which would you use?

I've got a DEC GigaSwitch to sell off but I need to decide which site to use.

The A1000 array is up and running and now going through some vigorous data transfers to see how it behaves.

23:03 - What is this? Part IV
Edited because this is actually a Part IV not a Part III and I forgot to add the answers for Part III.

The ones from Part III were a fire hose valve, a manhole cover, and a pop-up sprinkler head.

It's been a while since I posted one of these. Got a bit busy.

On to the pictures:Collapse )

12:08 - Apologies for those viewing pictures...
My apologies to all those attempting to view the most recent pictures. The network here has become unstable again for unknown reasons. It did this back in April with random outages occuring frequently for a few minutes each. It had mostly gone away but in the last two days the problems have come back full force. So far I'm up to 21 outages since August 1.

Just keep trying, eventually the network comes back up and you can view the images.

10:10 - What a big storm
Good thing about the storm: it generated a lot of lightning that I could try to photograph.
Bad thing about the storm: it was too windy and too close to reliably photograph the lightning.

I didn't have my car or I would have driven to the top of a parking deck further into campus which had a better view of the whole sky. As it was, I was standing outside when the 60 MPH winds showed up and tried to knock everything over including me. The winds also blew the rain into the deck where I was so I couldn't take pictures for quite a while until after the major storm cell passed by.

I ended up taking 220 pictures. About 40 of them have lightning but I didn't get many spectacular strikes. The one that would have been fantastic was nearly off the edge of the frame. Quite disappointing but I wasn't able to get a better vantage point due to the rain and wind.

The first picture shows how heavy the rain was, you could barely see the buildings. The next one was an attempt to photograph a strike but all I got was the satellite dish field behind Turner. I was in the process of running deeper into the parking deck to avoid the wind and rain.

Lots and lots of pictures...Collapse )

15:59 - Found one more lightning photo
I discovered this one in the set I was about to discard. They are actually stepped leaders before the main stroke. Stepped leaders are quite dim compared to the main stroke so I didn't notice this one at first. The image is blurry as I had been occupied with adjusting the camera and only noticed the flash of light out of the corner of my eye and bumped the camera as I turned and took the picture. The storm had been calming by this point so I thought most of the lightning was gone. You can see one of the stepped leaders is actually coming from the tip of the skyscraper (Bank of America). The main stroke actually occured elsewhere. These leaders never joined.

Lightning (31) (696k)

23:39 - Solaris 7 anyone?
I need a copy of Solaris 7 since my copy of Solaris 8 does not support a sun4c architecture. Anyone know of a copy laying around? :)

20:11 - More lightning
This time the storm passed to the south so I had to shift positions to take the photos. I don't have my car right now otherwise I would have driven to a parking deck on campus so all these shots were done through the window of the highest elevator lobby in my apartment building. I need to build a blackout box for doing that sort of thing.

12:57 - Finally someone started thinking
I was talking to my parents and found out that the supervisor of elections for my home county has dropped the electronic voting machines and gone back to machine readable paper ballots (fill in the blank, not punch card). The SoE cited concern for lack of a paper trail and not enough auditing of the code in the electronic machines. The ballots are scanned at the polling place not at the central office and the computer on the scanner will alert a voter to any errors in their ballot (forgot to vote for an entry, too many votes on an entry, unreadable fill-in bubble).

Much better.

10:50 - ...and yet they got a license?
I heard two doors slam outside my window a few moments ago. Two guys got into a car parked just outside. It took them five minutes of fumbling with keys and two phone calls to figure out how to start the car (a Honda Accord). Then they nearly sideswiped the two cars parked on either side.
