The most important things are the hardest things to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them -- words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it?
That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for want of an understanding ear.

The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while you were saying it.
That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for want of an understanding ear.

GUYS HEY GUYS DO YOU READ THE GONE BOOKS? WELL WHY NOT.
It's a young adult series (are you surprised, seriously, my bookshelf is for twelve year olds), set in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting with distinct horror tones throughout. I'm talking hardcore Stephen King shit here, like, while I was reading the latest book I had to sleep with my light on. (Then again, it is called "Fear".) This is not a book series that will be adapted into a PG-13 movie any time soon. Not without serious cuts.
I was going to give you a few paragraphs about all the main characters, then realised there are a fuckton of awesome characters that are all important to the series and, man, I don't have time/energy for that. You get like a sentence and a half-assed PB fancast for my favourites instead. Anyway, it takes place in a fictional Californian town called Perdido Beach which gets sealed off from the rest of the world after an almost-meltdown at the nuclear power plant. It gets called the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone) because teenagers think it's awesome to give stuff stupid names. Oh, yeah -- and everyone over the age of fourteen disappears, whoops.
In all seriousness, this series is really, really good. Much like The Stand, it's an excellent in-depth look at exactly how people go about surviving and building a society after a traumatic apocalypse, with the added complication that none of the characters are over fourteen so they fuck it up even more. Also there are superpowers hell yeahhh.
( also also it's by the dude who ghost-wrote most of the animorphs books DO I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION YET )
