Aesop's Fables Kindle Edition
Meet a jealous donkey, a tortoise who wants to fly, a very special goose and many other animals in this collection of tales, retold especially for children. Aesop’s fables are the perfect way to learn important lessons about life through the adventures of some unforgettable animal friends.
For centuries, children and adults have treasured the stories handed down by Aesop, a slave who lived in ancient Greece approximately six centuries B.C. Known for their charm and simplicity, these simple tales feature brief adventures of animals, birds, and beasts — with a message hidden in each narrative. With infamous vignettes, such as the race between the hare and the tortoise, the vain jackdaw, and the wolf in sheep’s clothing, the themes of the fables remain as fresh today as when they were first told and give an insight into the Ancient Greek world.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Aesop (620–564 BCE) was an Ancient Greek fabulist or story teller credited with a number of fables now collectively known as Aesop's Fables. Although his existence remains uncertain and (if they ever existed) no writings by him survive, numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. Many of the tales are characterized by animals and inanimate objects that speak, solve problems, and generally have human characteristics.
Scattered details of Aesop's life can be found in ancient sources. An ancient literary work called 'The Aesop Romance' tells an episodic, probably highly fictional version of his life, including the traditional description of him as a strikingly ugly slave who by his cleverness acquires freedom and becomes an adviser to kings and city-states.

Jerry created art for the Harry Chapin Run Against Hunger commemorative poster, a foundation that helps bring food to those in need. He was invited to create a painting for the 30th Bologna Book Fait, Bologna, Italy and the NASA Art Collection at the John F. Kennedy Space Center. He was appointed to serve on the U.S. Postal Services Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (1982-1992). In 2001 Jerry was invited by Laura Bush to illustrate and design the White House Christmas Program. He has held professorships teaching art at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY; the University of Delaware, Newark, DE; and the University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY. In 2003, Jerry was appointed to the National Council of the Arts - NEA (2003-2009). His art can be found in the permanent collections at the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, the Delaware Art Museum and the Brandywine River Art Museum.
His works have been featured in The New York Times, Arts Section, American Artists Magazine, The Horn Book Magazine, The CBS Sunday Morning Show and PBS Reading Rainbow Room. Pinkney is also a past trustee for the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and the Katonah Museum of Art. He lives with his wife, author Gloria Jean, in Westchester County, NY.

The many works of Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) include many humorous and political cartoons for Punch and other periodicals of the time, but he is best known for his illustrations of the original editions of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Class" by Lewis Carroll.

Michael Hague was born in Southern California in 1948. His mother, Marie, emigrated from England just after World War II and settled in California where she met and married Riley Hague. Michael is the eldest of three children. His mother introduced him to the stories and art in the fairytale books she enjoyed herself as a child. He attributes this and his mother's encouragement to pursue drawing while growing up, to his interest in becoming an illustrator.
Michael Hague was influenced by a wide variety of artistic styles, ranging from the movies of the Disney Studios, to the oriental printmakers Hokusai and Hiroshige. His mother banned comics from their house when Michael was a child, which of course made them all the more attractive to the young artist. Exploring this genre he discovered the work of the comic artists Hal Foster and Windsor McKay. The artists from the Golden Age of Illustration such as Arthur Rackham, W Heath Robinson, Howard Pyle, and Dulac also influenced his work and he is an avid collector of their books and art. His study of classical fine art contributed to his skills in drawing, painting and composition.
Mr. Hague describes his technique: "Once the subject is chosen, I start out with very small compositional sketches. These small thumbnails are then enlarged to full-sized sketches, where I develop the details of the picture. From there I proceed to re-create these initial sketches as finished pencil illustrations. When these drawings are completed, I am ready to begin painting. Today I have added a new tool to the painting process of my work, the computer. Often I do the complete coloring process on the computer. Other times I paint and then rework the piece on the computer. It has opened up a whole new world of possibilities and I am still discovering new ways to paint and draw."
About his work, Michael Hague says, "I count myself as one of the most fortunate of beings. For as an artist I have not only the pleasure but also the duty to daydream. It is a part of my work. I have been a contented daydreamer all of my life, often to the exasperation of those around me. I have always wanted to be a book illustrator. Books are what got me interested in the art field in the first place. I try to infuse my illustrations with the same spirit that the author of the story produces in my imagination. I strive to create something from an empty canvas that becomes a whole "other world" that people can visit for a while and totally believe in --- that's what is exciting to me as an artist. It doesn't matter whether it is a Greek myth or an American legend, my approach is the same, to try and blend fantasy with realism."
In 1980, the classic novel, Wind in the Willows with illustrations by Michael Hague, ushered in a new era in children's books. During the following decades his artistic talents brought attention to this magnificent tale and other classics in children's literature. Millions of children and adults re-discovered these wonderful stories and delighted in the visions Michael created. Mr. Hague continues to work expanding his art to comics and graphic novels.

Depictions of Aesop in popular culture over the last 2500 years have included several works of art and his appearance as a character in numerous books, films, plays, and television programs.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2014With this latest pop-up book the authors Chris Beatrice and Bruce Whatley have out done themselves in illustrating the classic Aesop Fables! Each story is breathtakingly illustrated with lush colour pictures and paper engineering by Kees Moerbeek! With the GOOSE THAT LAID THE GOLDEN EGG the surprises that the farmer and the wife find are well illustrated and presented with each turn of the pop-up page! And when the farmer has a look of concern over what his wife will do next as she decides to kill the goose to get all the eggs at once a flip of the page reveals the goose has been killed and the animals look sad at the loss! These smaller pop-ups reveal the full story while the large center piece shows the goose in full glory before her demise!
In THE FOX AND THE CROW a spectacular tree stands in full view with the fox at bottom and the crow at the very top! When the fox compliments the crow and says I bet your voice is preetier then the other birds, the crow agrees and lets out a caw, caw sound and the fox gobbles up the cheese that the crow had in it's beak! The fox said, "You do have a beautiful voice but you don't seem to have a brain!"
In the familar story The TORTOISE AND THE HARE the pop-ups present the wily hare who is outdone by the tortoise in the last pop-up page! The next 5 storys are presented with one pop-up for each story on a 2 page spread! THE HORSE AND THE STAG, THE DOG AND HIS BONE, TWO TRAVELERS AND A BEAR, THE WIND AND THE SUN, and THE FOX AND THE GRAPES each have an approprite pop-up to illustrate their tale. At times the pop-ups are tricky to fold back in but they fold in well for the most part!
The next to last story is THE LION AND THE MOUSE with the tale starting out with the lion catching a mouse who has woken him up! When the mouse suggests he might help the lion some day the lion lets him go! The center pop-up shows the lion captured in a net and the last pop-up shows the lion freed by the mouse for a happy ending!
Finnaly there is THE ANTS AND THE GRASSHOPPER with this pop-up tale well presented and Aesop is presented as a boy surrounded by his animal friends! Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2012This is a complete collection of the the timeless fables of Aesop, translated into easily-readable colloquial English. The date of the original fables, which were in Ancient Greek, is uncertain. It is said that Aesop lived from 620-564 BC, that he was a slave on the Greek Island of Samos, and was born either in somewhere in Asia Minor or Thrace. He is also often characterized as having been an ugly hunchback. However, nobody really knows for sure, nor does any of that really matter. What is certain is that the fables attributed to Aesop are as entertaining, and the lessons taught by them as universally true, as they were were thousands of years ago. The charm and wonder of Aesop's fables is that they are completely and equally comprehensible by people of any culture, and from any era; either now, in the distant past, or ten thousand years from now. They have never been outdated, and undoubtedly never will be. Few works of literature, from any age or culture, are so universal as the Fables of Aesop. They should be required reading for anyone, in any country on earth, who wishes to consider themselves educated.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Aesop’s Fables. It’s incredible how many of today’s stories — whether in books, movies, or even children's cartoons — echo the same themes and moral lessons that appear in these tales. Stories like “The Tortoise and the Hare” or “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” continue to shape our cultural storytelling and values.
The Chartwell Classics hardcover includes b&w illustrations which are charming, the cover is beautifully designed, and the paper quality gives it a satisfying, tactile feel which adds to the enjoyment of reading. If you like hardcover versions of books or if you are looking for something to add to your Chartwell Classics collection then I would add this (let's face it, I clearly did) - yes it looks great on a shelf but is also a great read too.
