Houston Then and Now® Hardcover – May 1, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
Part of the 4-miliion-selling-trademark series from Pavilion Books – a vivid historical tour of Houston, with the same view photographed today, from a great local author.
In 1836 revolutionaries routed the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto and the nearby town took the name of the battle’s victor, General Sam Houston. Since that time Houston has become America’s fourth largest city, and its magnificent cityscape of concrete, glass, and steel bears little resemblance to traditional Texas imagery. It’s easy to see why its residents, showing allegiance to their unique heritage, proudly refer to themselves as Houstonians rather than Texans.
It was an entrepreneurial New York family who first promoted Houston’s lush landscape and vast potential in the Northeast and Europe, and the town expanded from a handful of tents into a place of over 10,000 residents by 1900. Oil was discovered nearby in 1901 and from then on Houston never looked back.
Sites include: City Hall, Carnegie Library, Houston Courthouse, Merchants and Manufacturers Building, Allen’s Landing, Houston Chronicle, Main and Preston, Sam Houston Hotel, USS Texas, San Jacinto Monument, Congress Avenue, Houston Water Works, Hermann Building, Texas Capitol Building, Majestic Metro, Old Cotton Exchange, Gulf Building, Moorish Federal Building, Carter’s Folly, Kress Building, Union Station, Esperson Building, Antioch Church, Houston Light Guard Armory, Magnolia Brewery, Grand Central Station, Rice University, Museum of Fine Arts, Hermann Park, Miller Outdoor Theatre and Warwick Hotel.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2013My friend lived in Houston many years and was delighted to receive this book after her move to Maryland. The book is filled with local Houston stops in black and white pictures. Even if you can't remember some of the places, it is a nice nostalgic book for Houston fans.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2017Very educational, being a native Houstonian knowing the history gives meaning to the places I have been visiting and seeing all my life. A new respect for our city for our grandchildren
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2013Born and raised in Houston, Texas and it was nice to read up a little history from Houston. This is great reading for those days where time is available to just do that - reading.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI ended up being a bit disappointed by this book. If you're looking to get a sense of and feel for Houston, this book probably won't do the trick. The key problem is that its focus is way too narrow. Most of the pictures are of old buildings, mostly downtown. Vast sectors of Houston and many interesting places in the city are neglected here. Yes, there are some photos towards the end of places outside of downtown (a page on the Astrodome, a page on the Ship Channel, etc.), but most of it revolves around downtown history and architecture. What about the Post Oak/Galleria area? Omitted. What about the various colleges in town? There is one page on Rice, and that's it. Bellaire? Arboretum? Gilley's in Pasadena? It would have been fun even to have something on Westbury Square. If you're into the architecture and history of older buildings in downtown Houston, then this book might really appeal to you. But, if you're like me and did not spend much time at all downtown during your time living in Houston, then you probably won't find much in this book that interests you.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2017One of the very few photo books that I have seen which shows modern photos directly comparable to earlier ones. Nice book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2022Great coffee table book. A little outdated but I guess that’s why the great price.
I bought one for me and one for a friend.
