Memories of Distant Mountains: Illustrated Notebooks, 2009-2022 Hardcover – Illustrated, November 26, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
For many years, Orhan Pamuk kept a record of his daily thoughts and observations, entering them in small notebooks and illustrating them with his own paintings. This book combines those notebooks into one volume. He writes about his travels around the world, his family, his writing process, and his complex relationship with his home country of Turkey. He charts the seeds of his novels and the things that inspired his characters and the plots of his stories. Intertwined in his writings are the vibrant paintings of the landscapes that surround and inspire him.
A beautiful object in its own right, in Memories of Distant Mountains readers can explore Pamuk's intoxicating inner world and can have a fascinating, intimate encounter with the art, culture, and charged political currents that have shaped one of literature’s most important voices.

About the author

Orhan Pamuk, described as 'one of the freshest, most original voices in contemporary fiction' (Independent on Sunday), is the author of many books, including The White Castle, The Black Book and The New Life. In 2003 he won the International IMPAC Award for My Name is Red, and in 2004 Faber published the translation of his novel Snow, which The Times described as 'a novel of profound relevance to the present moment'. - Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseBest to read the journals while reading any of the novels at the same time. I’m reading Nights of Plague. The journal illustrates scenes from the novel in drawings and observations. It describes many other novels and characters as well.

an enjoyable, illustrated journey through the novelist's life: his encounters with art; his various frustrations and travels; his insomnia; his writing process. five stars!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025Format: KindleThe book itself, in the print edition, is 5 star—it's a fine insight into Pamuk's writing process, the ideas that occupy his mind. His sketches are quick and rough, but help tell his story and are worth having.
BUT the Kindle edition is not worth the bother. His notebooks are primarily 2-page spreads, with sketches spanning both pages, and you can't see that in the Kindle edition—you can only see 1 page at a time. Save your money and effort, get the printed book.
