AniBOS is an emerging network of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). It provides freely available oceanographic data collected through bio-logging, deploying sensors on marine animals.
Read more about AniBOS in the GOOS Status Report 2025.
“Through the GOOS AniBOS network, elephant seals now provide real-time marine mammal data. This first-of-its-kind data deepens our understanding of seal biology, provides essential oceanographic observations of the Southern Ocean below the surface, and helps shape conservation and marine spatial planning efforts.” (GOOS, 2025).
Our Vision
To enhance understanding and describe our changing oceans through the eyes of marine animals.
Our Mission
Collect and make freely available oceanographic measurements from the most inaccessible regions of the global seas to understand our Changing Oceans

AniBOS Endorsed as a Project of the UN Decade
AniBOS has been endorsed by UNESCO through the UN Ocean Decade as a Decade Project 2021 – 2030. Our project: Animal-Borne Ocean Sensors: A decadal vision through new eyes, is part of the global program Ocean Observing Co-Design – Evolving ocean observing for a sustainable future.
Our Decade project complements conventional approaches to ocean observing by providing physical and ecological data in ocean regions directly at the scale and resolution relevant to animals and integrates animal collected data within Global Ocean Observing System to improve our ability to observe and predict global climate processes and animal behaviour for societal benefit.
