For Maria Rosa Rojas Noguera, a Medical Physics master’s graduate from Kaunas University of Technology with roots in Venezuela, the integration of AI into medicine is not only a professional interest but a personal mission.

“If we were to shrink the Solar System, with all its planets, down to the size of an orange, the other oranges (representing other stars) would be about a kilometre away,” says Dr Vytautas Stankus, a KTU physicist, offering an unusual perspective on all things space.

Raraa Alnema has already called several countries his home. Originally from Syria, he finished high school in Saudi Arabia, later studied in Turkey, and eventually found himself in Lithuania. He first came here through an Erasmus+ exchange programme, and something clicked.

“When I think about my little Lithuanian bubble, I realise there’s so much more out there,” says Gintarė Baranauskaitė, a graduate of Kaunas University of Technology’s (KTU) New Media Language programme, who has spent a whole year studying and training abroad.

The latest results of the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR), one of the world’s most renowned university ranking systems, were published today. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) has been ranked 741st–750th in the world this year, making it the second strongest university in Lithuania. “In general, the term ‘sustainable fashion’ sounds impressive, but in some respects, fashion is always unsustainable,” says Kęstutis Lekeckas, a professional fashion designer and a professor at Kaunas University of Technology, KTU. The participants of the 6th International Teaching and Staff Training Week (Global Faculty Week 2025), organised by the International Relations Department at KTU, came from 28 different countries around the world.

Dr Karolina Armonaitė, a researcher at the KTU Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, earned her PhD in computational neuroscience in Italy, and her work includes electroencephalography studies of astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

As written in Nanoscale Horizons Emerging Investigator Series, Dr Mindaugas Juodėnas is a senior researcher specializing in nanophotonics and optical metasurfaces at the Institute of Materials Science, Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania). In the newly released national rankings, provided by the “Reitingai” magazine, Kaunas University of Technology scored 60.34 points, leading among engineering universities for achievements in science, arts, sports, and the added value it creates for the national economy.

She came to Kaunas to study Materials Physics and Nanotechnologies – just like Illia, a Ukrainian born in Uzbekistan. Coming from the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Anitha Lakshmi Vadde Adinarayana did not choose the most obvious destination for her master’s studies. While many opt for larger, more familiar study cities, she landed in Kaunas – a compact town in Lithuania, one of the Baltic states. It turned out to be perfect for her – the two years went by faster than Anitha expected.

Coming from different corners of the world, Azerbaijan and Nigeria, Aysu Azimzade and Chimdimma Godfrey Iregbu found themselves in the same city, at the same university, and even studying the same programme: Public Policy and Security at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). What united them was a shared interest in understanding how systems work, how laws are made, and how policy shapes societies.

Interpreting and translation in general are often seen as skills confined to conference rooms, diplomatic meetings and offices. However, the job can take translators far beyond comfortable office chairs.

“The first thing I remember about Lithuania is landing in Vilnius, and, while driving on a van to Kaunas, watching a beautiful sunset from the window. The sky was bright yellow despite the setting sun, the trees looked as green as I remember them from my childhood, and the farming ground seemed to be brown-reddish because of the sunlight angle. I watched, and at the moment, I understood the Lithuanian flag was painted by nature itself,” says Mikhail Edisherashvili from Sakartvelo.

The newly released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 place KTU among the top 400 universities globally in Materials Science and Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering, and among the top 500 in Electrical and Chemical Engineering.

For Giorgi Kokhreidze, basketball has always been his greatest passion. Born in Tbilisi, Sakartvelo, and raised in Kutaisi, he grew up in a basketball-loving family. “Both my mother and father played basketball, and I think it followed through my DNA,” he says. His skills brought him to Lithuania, where he was invited to train with the Žalgiris youth team during a summer camp. However, it was a studying opportunity that ultimately convinced him to stay.

“My academic journey has been a mix of passion and curiosity, and I have always been keen on expanding my knowledge,” says Raja Vignesh Thirukumaran, fresh-out-of-KTU graduate of MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management from Tamil Nadu in India.

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive skin cancers, with over 300,000 new cases reported worldwide each year. In Europe, the number of diagnoses has been rising rapidly. However, early detection and advanced treatments can significantly improve survival rates. “I always wanted to do something good not only for the environment but also for the people,” says Luisa Maria Santofimio Varon from Colombia. Lithuanian folk music, although considered a symbol of cultural identity, has a unique relationship with Europe’s uneven temperament systems and Middle Eastern combinations, according to a recent study by Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) researchers.

Ukrainian Kseniia Butenko, a third-year New Media Language student at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), has just returned from an exciting adventure. Through the Erasmus exchange programme, the last six months she was studying at the University of Aveiro in Portugal – a journey Kseniia describes as an Oscar-worthy movie experience.

According to the “Reitingai” magazine, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) was ranked second in Lithuania in bachelor’s, master’s and integrated study fields.

She veered off the traditional path of an Azerbaijani woman, began crafting tricky quiz questions, and started guiding tours around Kaunas all while driving the SPEAK Lithuania initiative forward. When Maria Rosa Rojas Noguera from Venezuela decided to continue her education and study for a master’s degree, she had her heart set on Australia. Still, she unexpectedly found herself thriving in the green landscapes of Lithuania. “I didn’t choose Kaunas. In a sense, I’d say Kaunas chose me,” says Maria. Her journey has been inspiring, from volunteering and teaching in Venezuela to celebrating Užgavėnės and studying in Lithuania. Today Maria encourages others not to give up and dedicates her time to science that solves real-world challenges.

“I am someone who uses any opportunity that comes my way and believes that participation is more important than the fear of losing,” says Tameem Ansari M from Chennai, India. A KTU informatics student has already developed a prize-winning innovation and is heading towards the end of his bachelor’s at the same time working in a local company as an AI specialist. He calls Kaunas his home away from home.

When Fallon Clare Manhanga arrived in Lithuania in 2016 to pursue her bachelor’s degree at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), she planned to return to Zimbabwe after graduation. However, life had its own way of unfolding. “Sometimes we plan, but God has different ideas,” she says with a smile. Years later, Fallon is still in Lithuania, working towards her PhD.

It is no secret – students who are actively involved in a variety of activities during their studies are successful. One of them is a recent Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) alumnus Azad Ismayilov from Azerbaijan. Over the past six years, he not only contributed to the name of KTU with his research and studies but also enhanced the university’s reputation through his activities and volunteering. Now, Azad has a successful career in Lithuania and a few more dreams on his mind – one being PhD studies.

Eylül Güleryüz’s passion for technology and creativity brought her from Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, to almost 34 times smaller Kaunas, Lithuania. She got her bachelor’s from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and plans to continue her education here. “I study Informatics, or should I say, studied?” says Eylül with a smile.

The results of the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2025, one of the world’s leading international university rankings, were announced today. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) has improved its ranking by more than 50 positions and is now ranked among the top 751–760 higher education institutions worldwide.

“I think the best thing I remember about KTU is the community and the number of amazing people I met who became a great part of my life,” says Amina Dautova from Kazakhstan, a graduate of architecture master’s programme at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). After achieving a bachelor’s degree in Malaysia, Amina decided to continue architecture studies in Europe to gain new perspectives.

Every year, Formula Student East, organised by the Association of Automotive Engineers, takes place in Europe. This competition serves as a platform for engineering students to deepen their expertise. Inspired by this prestigious event, Martin Gomez, an Ecuadorian student studying Intelligent Robotics Systems at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) founded Formula Student Lithuania – a dynamic racing team qualified to compete in the race. Recently, it gained formal recognition as an official KTU student organisation.

“The one thing that Lithuania and Honduras have in common is that most people don’t know where either of those countries is,” says Wendy Giovanna Andino Villalta from Honduras. A third-year student of mechatronics at Kaunas University of Technology. Living more than 10 thousand kilometres away from home, she believes that pursuing dreams requires sacrifice, but the rewards are worth the challenge.

“I wanted to finally study something that is relevant to me and that I actually enjoy,” says Mahdjouba Kettab from France, studying master’s in Public Policy and Security at KTU. Mainly studying online, Mahdjouba visited KTU just a couple of times. From Kaunas, she brought home a passion for herbal tea, new friendships, and an experience of living in a different part of Europe. The future crisis management expert says that she will come back.

“I have always been interested in the connection between food and health, and how what we eat can impact our bodies and wellbeing,” says Narmin Babayeva from Azerbaijan, studying Food Science and Nutrition at KTU. While hard-working and focused, Narmin always makes sure that she has time to pursue her hobbies, as they are very important for her overall happiness.

“It felt as if life didn’t offer me enough challenges, that is why I chose to go to the Netherlands,” says Urtė Mackevičiūtė, a Communication Studies and Information Management Technologies student from the Kaunas University of Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. In 2023, the autumn semester she spent at the University of Twente.

“I clearly remember the day I arrived here – I was so excited about all the experiences I was about to have, that I remember going out in the freezing cold wearing just a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a casual jacket,” says Martin Xavier Gomez Salazar from Ecuador. A third-year KTU Intelligent Robotics Systems student says that he has learned to love Lithuania “to its fullest”.

“KTU made me steer my career in the solar energy direction,” says Murad Najafov from Azerbaijan, a country with abundant natural resources and a highly developed petroleum industry. At the moment, Murad, studying chemical engineering master’s at Kaunas University of Technology, is already on his third internship abroad and says that he has no time to miss home.

The extremely fast-changing construction sector, influenced by the Internet of Things, building information modelling and digital twins, and other innovations, forces business enterprises and the academic community to constantly improve. Effective application of these new technologies can increase the efficiency of the construction sector, reduce energy consumption in buildings, and ultimately create smart building systems that learn from past data.

A team of ECIU University students, including a KTU student, have completed an outstanding challenge – they have created a plan to help reduce the carbon footprint (CO2) for a Lithuanian company. The results of the sustainability plan for Scania Lithuania can be used to reduce CO2 emissions for other companies and organisations in the country.

For the fifth time, Lithuanian National Broadcaster, LRT has invited us to remember the most outstanding events, personalities, initiatives, and achievements of the year 2022, which inspired us all and helped Lithuania to grow and improve. Meda Surdokaitė, a Kaunas University of Technology GIFTed Talent Academy student has won in a Future of the Year category. As stated in the LRT press release, Surdokaitė became “Future of the Year” for her achievements in the EU Young Scientists competition.

The closest family members around the table, festive treats, a twinkling Christmas tree decorated with garlands and shining toys, Christmas tunes playing in the background – this is probably what Christmas looks like in most parts of the world. Many will agree that the true meaning of Christmas is to share joy and warmth with loved ones. However, different countries have different traditions for the festive period.

In the Global Online Marketing Academic Challenge (GOMAC 2022), the team students of the KTU School of Economics and Business, the Marketing study programme were recognized as the winners of the European region. The campaign of another team from KTU entered the final.

Azad Ismayilov, a KTU industrial engineering and management student from Azerbaijan, already has two internships in international companies, several scholarships and a bachelor’s in aviation engineering under his belt. “Sometimes it’s about working smarter rather than hard,” smiles Azad, currently a technical records specialist in an international aviation company.

KTU’s system of renewable energy resources, which received international recognition in 2020, attracted the attention of the Commission for Energy and Sustainable Development of the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) this year. During their visit to KTU, the MPs got acquainted with the hybrid electricity production and heat storage system operating at the University, which not only protects the environment but also supplies the buildings on the campus.

Earlier this week, an exhibition dedicated to celebrating Kazakhstan as a nuclear-free state was opened at the KTU Student Infocentre. The exhibition will run until the end of next week.

Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) applied chemistry student Meda Surdokaitė won the first prize at the European Union Young Scientists Competition in the Netherlands on Saturday. The news was released by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, and published by lrt.lt.

Colombian Gerson David Pinto Chica came to Kaunas from Kibaha in Tanzania, where his family currently lives. He admits that moving across continents at a young age had made him rather robust and open to change. “I had to learn English, and Swahili and adapt to a different culture, but it was useful as now I don’t feel lonely when I travel”, says Gerson, currently studying mechatronics at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).

In recent years Alzheimer’s disease has been on the rise throughout the world and is rarely diagnosed at an early stage when it can still be effectively controlled. Using artificial intelligence, KTU researchers conducted a study to identify whether human-computer interfaces could be adapted for people with memory impairments to recognise a visible object in front of them.

When she was 17, Alejandra Gutierrez Luna travelled half the world from South America to Africa to live. There, at a university in Zambia, she started studying medicine. However, five years into her studies, the girl decided to pursue her real passion and moved to Lithuania, to study… architecture. “Architecture offered more than just art studies – it is everything I always wanted to study and do for a living”, says Alejandra, a sophomore student of architecture at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).

ECIU University Days 2022 was the first on-site post-pandemic cycle of events of ECIU University where students and the community could learn more about ECIU University activities. The participants could try challenge-based learning (CBL) in a workshop and listen to the experiences of working in international teams.

On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) THE Impacts Rankings 2022 were announced. For the first time, KTU was included in these rankings by the international university rating agency Times Higher Education, which ranks the world universities’ actions directed towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

At the very heart of Kaunas University of Technology Student Campus, a new contemporary Student Information Centre was opened earlier this month. The refurbished contemporary info point is a place to contact for any questions you may have about the student services provided by the university.

“I look at my future in Lithuania with bright eyes,” says Carlos Sosa Henríquez from Gran Canaria, studying aeronautical engineering master’s at Kaunas University of Technology. From his young years, Carlos was interested in “how these large things can fly”. After graduating with his first degree at home, he chose KTU in Lithuania, a country where the aeronautical engineering sector is rapidly growing.

“There are two types of people: peach and coconut. Peach people are soft, very friendly, and talkative outside but very reserved inside. Coconut people have a shell that is hard to crack, but once you crack that shell, they are very warm and nice. I grew up in Turkish culture, in which people are mostly peach type. Lithuanians, on the other hand, are coconut,” says Eylul Guleryuz, studying Informatics at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).

“In Kaunas, I have made a step forward into an independent adult life,” says Narmin Mammadova from Azerbaijan. Currently studying Public Governance at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Narmin decided to transfer to the Kaunas University of Technology after spending here one semester as an exchange student. She says that this decision utterly transformed her life.

In March 2022, a new location emerged on the cultural map of Kaunas – KTU opened a new multifunctional Campus Library, which will be available to the public. A contemporary study place is located in the Kaunas University of Technology campus, next to the main building of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

“Every time I write a line of code, I feel that I have created a piece of art. Lithuanian researchers from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) improved an algorithm that detects Alzheimer’s disease from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. The new model achieved over 98 per cent accuracy on a test dataset in detecting the neurodegenerative disease by improving a neural network model.

The coronavirus pandemic that suddenly hit the world a couple of years ago affected many aspects of life in Lithuania, including education. Since then, technologies became inseparable from the educational process.

In the near future, the physicians will be able to monitor the patients at their homes using virtual reality tools, computer scientists are convinced. A team of researchers from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania, proposed a deep-learning-based method for the three-dimensional human shape reconstruction when the original figure is only partly visible. The main advantage of the method is its relatively low cost, high compression of the images obtained and easy integration with the existing virtual reality tools. The method was developed using a real-world dataset, the clinical trial is pending.

The new system would connect restaurants and households on one side of Lithuania with recycling companies on the other via the app. Based on current resources, the application should be launched in 2022.

Although contemporary women are urged to fight against the stereotypes defining the IT field as exclusively masculine, the number of girls choosing IT studies and pursuing careers in this field is still low. According to Agnė Paulauskaitė-Tarasevičienė, the Head of KTU Artificial Intelligence Centre, the situation would change if the girls were introduced to technologies at an early age.
